McKenzie's mount

Last summer Jet Age asked me refurbish the old 48th Hurricane.

New canopy, touched paint - and a hacksaw event.

To depict that scene, dramatised on the Airfix boxart

A print being sold at Jet Age depicts the scene

As does the book.

Nice one,are you replicating the damage?

No - not for this build. I don't want to compromise such a beautiful kit.

As close as I can get to replicating the aircraft immediately prior to that mission.

Installed the cockpit atop the wing now.
Then wedged the pilot in.

So what compromises so far? The rudder bar is much wider than the pilot's feet - so stirrups are glue to his boots.
The stick - well the handle in his right hand isn't attached to anything else.
Couldn't fit legs under the compass, so the cross-member has been removed.

I found the cockpit frame pretty difficult to align, without a jig.

For anyone else building this kit - I'd suggest fixing the spars to the wing, then the undercarriage bay roof, then building up the cockpit frame atop that.

Cockpit interior just before I joined the fuselage halves.

and now I've assembled the wings to the fuselage.

More Tim mods, as I couldn't get this together as Airfix designed.

That tongue on the forward bulkhead was removed as obstructing and no visible.

Bulkhead the pilot-seat was mounted on wasn't quite right. I removed that from the wing stuff, fitting it into the fuselage.

I had to trim the forward frames to about semi-circle section, to give a bit more space, befor I could fit the wing. Once all in the right position - liquid poly. It ain't coming apart again!

Looking down into the cockpit of the assembled model - I can't help thinking that not much of that detail is visible, making this kit over complicated - with detail obstructing a good fit.
