Procopius
Is there a Tempest in the future? Two, plus a Heller one I ordered to see about correcting the length issue (probably not, for 2mm). I did check on an old kit to see, and the (more accurate) Brengun Typhoon bubble canopy fits the Academy Tempest! Anyhow. Once Winston (fig.1) fell asleep, I went down to the grotto. Figure 1. The Scream Factory at Rest I added the canopy. This required clamping along with PVA glue. Fairly sure it's a little off-kilter. Am I bothered? Yes. Added Perfect Plastic Putty: And smoothed: See what I mean about off-kilter? Rrrghng.
CedB
Hi PC (hi Winston, shhhhh) Good job fitting the canopy PC. I'm wondering, looking at that picture, if the canopy is more or less straight and it just looks slightly off because of the paint / seam filler? The tail's not upright in the shot so hard to tell from here but it's only a little bit off eh? You could rip it off and start again but I don't think it will notice when the paint's on?
Stew Dapple
It's difficult to say, innit? It looks as if the picture was taken from slightly to the right of directly above and that can be making the canopy look wonky, it looks okay in the other pictures. I've taken pictures before where the undercarriage looks splayed or the tailplanes pointing in a slight different direction when in fact they have been fine... parallax, is that the word I'm after? Cheers, Stew
Beard
I think it's slightly off-kilter. The fuselage seam is slightly off-centre of the front of the canopy (If we assume that that the seam is the middle of the fuselage and that each half is the same size). If any of what I've written makes sense then it's down to you whether you care, of not.
gruffy
Winston's been allowing us very little sleep, and now Mrs. P has caught his cold. It won't be long before my (by comparison) iron constitution succumbs to this social treason in my own home. As it is, I've slept maybe four or five hours in the past two days. I feel Mrs. P's resolve to have a second little scream factory (in pink) is wavering. If so, all these sacrifices will be worth it. On the other hand, if she keeps leaving her damn ipad in the bed and then knocking it to the floor and waking the baby, she's going to leave this world in a manner not unlike the abrupt departure of Abimelech, son of Jerubbaal, with the ipad playing the part of the millstone. In any event, I got some more done on the Tiffy. I had painted the turtledeck, but it looked like crap, and I sanded it down, added filler, and sanded some more. Then, as I perused the Valiant Wings Typhoon book (which is about 60% useful information to 40 "why is this here?", IMO), I realized there were tons of gubbins abaft the seat armour, so I added them. I managed to lose the little...a small...a thingamajig. So I scratched a rough replacement for it. I also bit the bullet and put together the hilariously overelaborate wheel wells. The wheel wells are (of course) rather too tall to fit in the wings, so there's a bit of sanding in my future, but after that things get a little easier. Still with me, Beard? How're we doing? At work, or socially? I know what you mean about wife's dropping or using iPads in bed and waking a baby! Nice to see something different built. rob85
It looks alright from here, maybe slightly off? No one is perfect.... I would imagine it's more to do with the angle of the pic though. Only take pics on an angle you will be fine, and if it really gets to you put it on a high shelf where you can't see the top?
Procopius
So I took off the canopy to try and fix it, but it still just wouldn't align properly, no matter where I sanded it. I even tried cutting it in half abaft the car doors to fit each part separately, but no dice. Finally I was forced to execute it with a hammer for gross dereliction of duty. I took no pleasure in doing so, but order must be maintained, by draconian measures if necessary. I dug into my second Brengun Typhoon and inspected both its canopy, and the mortal remains of the original, and it quickly became clear to me why I was having so much bother: the canopy is molded slightly out of kilter. I'm not even mad. (I am a little mad.) There was no way I could have gotten it perfect, and I should have left it well alone. But I'm going to press on. I have the other kit's canopy...uh, if anyone has a bubble-canopy Brengun Typhoon and isn't using the spare car-door clear part...well.
Cookenbacher
That's a bummer. Glad you're pressing on PC, keep this up and we may see a new tooled 1/72 car door Typhoon arriving soon. Isn't it always the way?

CedB
Yikes. An out of kilter molding... bad luck PC and well done for trying... it got what it deserved (although perhaps I should hide my hammer in case you've given me ideas) Airfix car door 1/24 downscale soon? Probably not so soon it makes you wish you'd waited.
Beard
...uh, if anyone has a bubble-canopy Brengun Typhoon and isn't using the spare car-door clear part...well.I have a bubble-canopy Brengun so, as I feel I'm responsible, PM me and I'll send you the spare (if there's one in the box). Christer A
Maybe they molded the canopy that way to have it compensate for the propeller torque? Or maybe it's the Tamiya extra thin fumes that are getting to my head...
perdu
I feel your pain PC, but I think you made all this happen by putting it in the bright glare of publicity There is an answer you know Take the second canopy that you have, restrain your self, I say restrain your self from remedying its existence with a large or medium hammer And do this Take milliput or other suitable substance Add wooden dowel of reasonable length and diameter And sand to shape taking in any vagaries you wish to correct or in my case aberrances you wish to add Then make a couple of new ones to suit (one for the box of course) The above was for the Tiffie I made from the venerable Frog/Rovex kit which I was daft enough to want to include the mirror bulge I also added the 'ridiculous' wheel well interior that no one has seen in the four or five years since I returned to the hobby/pastime/OBSESSION Yours does have the look, nice Tiff PC Get on with it huh
Procopius
Perdu, old top, you always have the best and most difficult-looking suggestions. I'm a simple man. I like my bacon by the pound, my eggs scrambled, my arteries as clogged as the M5, and my canopies injection-molded. So what I did, in between dadding it up, trying to coordinate the social media side of a phenomenally slipshop and unprofessional national advertising campaign for a large professional association (did I mention I am willing and able and eager to relocate to the UK if anyone there needs a social media manager?), and reading up on the Westland Whirlwind (first go-'round), was superglue canopy #2 on, bow first, then stern, with CA accelerator and my backup accelerator, obscenities whispered at the canopy as saliva dripped down my chin. Not pretty, but it more or less worked. I'm using PPP to blend in the canopy, because dear sweet Jesus it needs the help. Okay, so let's... Yeah, and then maybe... But what if I... Pull it all together... Uh, well okay. We'll do another coat of primer soon I hope. I used Alclad Black even though it sucks aspic laced with thumbtacks, and I thinned it with what I thought was my self-levelling Gunze lacquer thinner but which was actually normal Gunze acrylic thinner, and it actually seemed to work okay anyway! So: more primer, then the painty bit. I hope! I turn 33 on the Ides, by the way. The USA has seen fit to reward me by giving a bloated pumpkin-coloured walrus in a badly-positioned Boris Johnson wig a 50/50 shot at control of our vast nuclear arsenal. Hurrah.

Stew Dapple
Nice remedial work on the Tiffie PC, commendable. Winston has a very focused look on his face there, it seems to imply: "If the bloated walrus who we cannot name has a chance, I will rule this nation someday!" Procopius
Winston has a very focused look on his face there, it seems to imply: "If the bloated walrus who we cannot name has a chance, I will rule this nation someday!" With a little luck, he'll be prime minister of a far more green and pleasant land. Winston looks like he's mobile now / soon? Uh oh, time to spend enormous amounts of money on edge protectors, child locks and baby gates to make the house child safe... or introduce him to gentle discipline and make a safe child? Call me old fashioned - I still don't run around the house with scissors For many years at my office, before my knee injury last year, I was notorious for sprinting everywhere, and I do mean everywhere. People had to dive out of my way. So, uh...circumspection had better not be hereditary, or he's in trouble. My dad leaned heavily on sarcasm and liberal thumpings when I was little, but Mrs. P (armed with a Masters in Early Childhood Education) has suggested to me that this might not have produced the paragon I long believed myself to be. (After one treasured family memory, about my mom looking out the window to see my dad sitting on my [eight-year-old] chest in the driveway, about to punch me, which had me and my siblings laughing uproariously, Mrs. P leaned over and whispered, in horror, "I think my ovaries just withered.") That said, we have to anchor the bookshelves to the walls. Imagine the damage this could do: And there are six more like it! Me either. Or part-built plastic model aeroplanes, no sir, not me That's just a necessary part of the build process. A handsome young chap with a glint in his eye, or is that a reflection of your Valiant he has his eyes on, I hope its on a high shelf, they are crafty buggers these little ones especially when they see something nice and shiny and then discover they have arms, legs and destructive hands! Happily the modelling grotto is hidden in the back of the darkest, scariest part of the basement, past the furnace room, and has a padlock for the door (to protect the stash from surprise audits). Edited to say: Hi Winston! He says "haaaaannnnnnhh". Finished priming the Typhoon tonight. Hope to get to painting soon -- leaning towards the white-nosed 109 killer.
Learstang
PC, very nice work on the Tiffie (and the little 'un also, although I'm led to believe that the female of the species does most of the actual heavy lifting, as it were)! However, just once, I wish we could get through a thread on this site without mention of 'the abrupt departure of Abimelech, son of Jerubbaal'. Next you'll be prating on about the rock of Sisyphos or Tantalos and his water and fruit. Come to think of it, your builds are rather reminiscent of the tortures of these two gentlemen. However, I couldn't help but notice the sad and inexplicable absence of a certain book on the Il-2 on your sagging bookshelves. No doubt it rests in a place of honour on one of your other six shelves, hopefully with votive candles placed around it in homage (although not too close - we don't want this precious tome to go up in flames).
