1:72 CMR de Havilland Sea Venom FAW.53

Recommended Posts

Not happy with the way CMR have done the windscreen.

Too high and the shapes all over the place.

I may be just being too picky.

I don't know, pictures of the real thing from that same elevated position and angle seem to me IMHO to show that the windscreen was much higher than you'd think from ground level shots.

You are a true artist Bill, up there with Leonardo, Arthur Streeton and Ansel Adams to name a few. These models you produce are works of art.

I would like to buy one and display it with pride like I would with an Ansel Adams or a Peter Eastway (I can't afford any of his works). Australia post would have it destroyed in the post.

Last month Peter Eastway had some prints for $195, I would have bought one but Her Indoors would not have approved. His prints usually sell for $5000.

Enough heifer dust.

You could just pay to ship me to Australia, and I'll build you a model while I'm there. Then you can ship me back. Oh, you have to feed me too. :)

As far as artists go, I think the only one I would pay for an original would be P.J. Crook. But even she is out of my price range.

Brilliant work, and great to see a proper EDSG finish rather than the fashionable (and wrong) lighter shades.

Richard in NZ

Thanks - the only EDSG I've ever seen was the Scimitar that used to be at the USS Intrepid Museum in NYC. I just shoot from the hip...or is it my airbrush?  :)

I was hoping to finish this weekend, but it ain't gonna happen. I'm going to Denver for seven days next week to visit a friend who was injured in a car crash. She's paralysed from the chest down and is in a spinal rehab facility. I'll have to finish the model when I get back. I did manage to get the arresting hook and v-frame finished - with those yellow and black stripes it reminds me a bit of King Tut's crook and flail (although technically that was gold and sapphire, both outside of my budget for this build).

Cheers,

Bill

Shameless thread hijack - here it is on the Intrepid in 2011. Looks like it had a reprint? Anyway it's since moved onshore somewhere.

Getting back to the Sea Venom, that's coming along very well indeed!

I've just caught up with your progress Bill. Have to say that i agree that she's a little work of art.

I'm almost persuaded that I could pick out one of your builds now Bill, even absent the Navy Bird appellation :) I can persuade myself that there's a characteristic to the detailing and finishing that's unique to you.

Anyways. She's lovely - and in future I might just start cutting and pasting approving remarks cos I'm running out of anything new to say :)

Ah, that's right. The Intrepid's Scimitar (along with a Douglas F3D Skyknight and a MiG-15) were loaned to a museum in Albany, New York to make room for the Space Shuttle. Not sure what the Shuttle has to do with an aircraft carrier, but I suspect it's a bigger draw than the Scimitar with the primary school kiddies from Brooklyn. And there are always a lot of those crumb-crunchers running around the ship.

I know what you mean - my thumbprints in the wet paint are a dead giveaway. That, and the globs of Humbrol tube glue on the canopy...seriously, thanks mate. Your comments are much appreciated!

Needless to say, I'm back from my short trip to Colorado. I spent most of one day at the Wings Over The Rockies Air & Space Museum, and they had a rather nice collection, including a B-1. I'll start a separate thread in the Aviation Photography (or is it Real Aviation?) forum and post my pictures.

Wifey and I also did some touring and went up in the mountains to see some great rock formations and Native American cliff dwellings. We took the cog train up to the summit of Pikes Peak, which is the closest either of us will ever get to mountain climbing. Here we are at the top:

Still quite a bit of snow above the tree line, and it was right chilly up there! Thank goodness the gift shop at the summit was selling hot doughnuts right out of the fryer. Sweet! Now if they only sold a bit more oxygen...I was quite surprised at the effects of the altitude. This was the highest elevation I've ever been at, and when I stepped off of the train I felt quite giddy. Even more drunk than I usually feel!

I promise to finish the Sea Venom - hopefully this week. First, though, I have to plant the flowers, mulch the flower beds, trim the hedge, all that nonsense. Plus, our 41st wedding anniversary is on May 31 - I suppose I should be planning something for that. Let's see, 1 is paper, 10 is tin, 25 is silver...so 41 must be "styrene" right?   :)

Cheers,

Bill

Welcome back from your travels (You're not in fact a French looking John Cleese like your avatar? ;) ).

Congratulations for next week. Yes, 41 years is either injection mounded plastic or resin (depends if it's a leap year).

Hey Bill, the two of you look great in that pic! I agree with my compatriot (of the same name, BTW), good to be able to associate a face to a forum name

My best wishes for your wedding anniversary, too (I love the idea of the "styrene" anniversary :D :D ); we'll wait for when you get everything sorted to see you completing the build :beer:

Ciao

Good to see you looking fit and healthy. I didn't realise the 41st anniversary had a proper name - in which case we have just had our styrene anniversary too, I must tell my wife (or maybe not)...... Maybe 42 is etched brass? No hurry with the Sea Venom, we are all enjoying it.

So if 41 years is styrene, Wifey will be waking you up with a large rattily box on the day. Best go and tell her that we all agree about this so she has time to get down to the local model shop or on line to the Big H.

Ah, Pikes Peak, reminds me of one of my favourite videos with one of my faourite rally drivers - if you have 5 minutes to spare & want to see the fast way to the top, have a look at climb dance - it's awesome, especially given some of the drops off the bends, & it was before they tarmaced the road to the top!

Congrats in advance on the upcoming 41st, I'm sure Mrs N.B. will love getting that lovely Sea Venom as her pressie...!!

Is that the same Pikes Peak of the famous hill climb race ?

Yup, that's the one. It's where the Unser family achieved their first fame in the 60s (nine Indy 500 wins between Al, Bobby, and Al, Jr.). I think Sébastien Loeb in a Peugeot still has the record for fastest time up the mountain.

But his isn't the proper record Bill, cos they've tarmaced the road now!

(still a mighty impressive drive though!

Hi Bill

Hope you are okay fella, Congrats on the anniversary, and glad you had a great trip. The Sea Venom looks fantastic. I have been inspired to look at doing my premiere kit, I have just got the Airwaves etch for it and once the loft conversion has been completed (Currently with local council for building regs) then I will crack on with that.

Keep up the good work

All the best
Chris

The course used to be a combination of gravel and paved sections, with additional paved sections added each year since 2002 until it was all tarmac in 2012. It's therefore difficult to compare times from one year to another. Loeb's time is still impressive - he set it in 2013, and the 2015 fastest time was two minutes slower. If you want to look at the record prior to the additional paving, then I think it was Rod Millen in 1994 in a Toyota Celica AWD Turbo (10 min 04 sec).

Thanks for the video links - man, I don't know who is crazier, the drivers or the fans standing on the edge of the course.

Cheers,

Bill

Happy 41st Anniversary (styrene) Bill, glad you had a nice time in Colorado, a beautiful state. Like everyone else, I enjoyed seeing the pic of you and Mrs Navy Bird, but with just a hint of disappointment that you weren't dressed like cow flinging French Knight stage whispering, "I told them we already got one."
