Sid de Koning
Group Captain Sir Douglas Robert Steuart Bader CBE, DSO & Bar, DFC & Bar, FRAeS, DL.. That's quite the title...Distinguished Service Order and BarDistinguished Flying Cross and BarCommander of the Most Excellent Order of the British EmpireKnight BachelorCroix-de Guerre etc..His history is most probably well known, so I'll just put in some pictures..in Spitfire MkII P.7966..Prisoner of war/ special guest at Galland's (l)..Bader in the cockpit of one of Galland's Bf-109's!!new artificial legs were air dropped after a personal request from Galland..after the war the two still met..Pictures of Bader's Mk.II..Despite some shortcomings I will be using the Tamiya kit of the Supermarine Spitfire Mk.I.Spitfires Mk.I, II and V are apparent look-a-likes. One of the easiest ways of telling a Mk.II is the small bulge over the Coffman starter on the right side of the nose. Bader's Mk.II had nose-art on the left side and text "MANXMAN" on the right side. He also insisted on metal ailerons. Both nose-art and text are available on the elobarate decal sheet Aces of the Empire by Victory Productions, 41 different Spitfires! VP also comes in handy regarding the specials regarding their topics..I haven't found any photographic and conclusive evidence of Bader's Mk.Va, the one he crashed in. Apparently it's also still not conclusive what caused the crash exactly and who was responsible for it.. friend or foe..Eduard and some scratchbuilding..I cut out the linnen ailerons, but upper and lower side are not identical regarding the cut marks..CMK.. too small, different angles.. neh.. want a different option...I have found a spare Mk.I on the internet and will be using this wing to make another attempt to get some scratchbuild metal ailerons. The recommended Ultracast 48113 set is also being shipped. Included in this set is the small bulge for the Coffman starter..
Sid de Koning
Today I scratched some more and got around to airbrushing Mr.Surfacer 1200, Alclad2 101 aluminum and Mr.Color 364 BS283 Aircraft Grey Green. If all goes well I'll have my new wing tomorrow. Anybody need some parts? My list to add/correct the Tamiya kit in order to transform a Mk.I to a Mk. II:- Coffman starter bulge- signal discharge ejection port underneath the tail- additional round inspection panels underneath both wings- gun heating air outlets underneath the wings, left and right differently shaped- remove gun muzzles and make some internal guns. 8x- make a handhole panel- make a coolant vent cock panel- make a pressure head inspection panel near the pitot- cockpit entry door without crowbar (ultracast, they include 2 for some reason)- different circular exhausts (ultracast)Furthermore for Bader's Mk.II:- DeHavilland Rotol Propeller (ultracast 48113)- metal ailerons Edited February 11, 2016 by Sid de Koning
Air-to-Air
I've always been fascinated by the Bader story, which I first read in high school. I will be following your build with interest as Sir Bader's aircraft is an interesting subject and what's not to like about a Spitfire build! Bedders
Sid, Interesting project and I'll be following. But I reckon that P7966 had a Rotol prop, just like other Mark IIs: the blades in the photos look fat enough at the root to convince me. F1Boomer
I am a Spitfire fan (not many people aren't I think) and will enjoy watching this one come together. Great start, love the period photos of Bader.
Sid de Koning
Sid, Interesting project and I'll be following. But I reckon that P7966 had a Rotol prop, just like other Mark IIs: the blades in the photos look fat enough at the root to convince me. Justin Indeed you are so right.. I keep mixing them up, but it is the Rotol prop I have ordered and need! Thanks for correcting me. Today I tried out a wash mixed of Future, Mr. Color Levelling thinner and a drop of Vallejo Black. It works quite nicely. Just when I thought to be smart and using a q-tip with Mr. tool cleaner to remove some wash streaks (it's rather permanent with the Future mixed in).. .. and I totally removed all paint layers.. airbrushed again with Mr.color and a semi-matte layer of Alclad2 on top.. with the mentioned wash and some extra generic decals.. the seat is less red in real time.. So far also the canopy is drying in it's clear Future layer, as well as my Sufa canopy.. remember that one? My spare wing hasn't been delivered yet, so there is only so much I can do without it.. Thanks for looking and commenting guys!
Sid de Koning
hmmm.. that's a bit too dark..same same..And the new spare wing takes even more time, what a bummer. So after glueing the two halves together I will be stuck..

Biggles87
The ailerons on Spitfires were the ' frise ' type which had a wider chord on the underside that on top, and hinged a little way back from the leading edge. They were designed this way so that the up aileron stuck out slightly below the wing and created drag to counteract the ' adverse yaw ' when the aircraft was rolled into a turn. You've done a great job on the cockpit, looking forward to more Cheers John

Sid de Koning
Because one can see through the cockpit..for a better fit at both wingroots..quite some fitting problems, for a Tamiya that is..primed and ready..And now for a question.. was this particular Spit's underside Sky Green or Sky Grey..VP decals for this Spit are Sky Grey whilst I was convinced it had to be Sky green..

Sid de Koning
started a test with VP decals and some Daco strong.. looks horrific.. after a while still horrific.. better, but not perfect, still some spots to be patched up.. Hobbydecal Spitfire stencils.. I can't get rid of these spots on the decals, do you have these as well? Stencils are lovely.. nose-art.. Next either another clear layer or first some postshading..
Christer A
The spots on the decals appears to be dried decal fluid? Check what happens if you just moist them with water. It might be so that the spots will go away with a wet clear coat, but that is a shot in the dark... The water test should give some answer though. It looks great except for those spots! Sid de Koning
I have had this before and up to and including now, these spots so disappear underneath a gloss coat of clear. It's not water or calcium deposit and I cannot polish them off. I did use both Microset and Daco medium and strong.. The Spit is now drying in it's recent wet coat of Future.
