Paul E
This is a procrastination project whilst I sum up the courage to make the PE for my model of HMS Somerset. It is also stage 1 in a stash reduction exercise and a refresher for working with resin, something which I have not done for a long time and want to be comfortable with before I build my Christmas present. The starting point for this is the Dodo Models kit which I ordered from E-bay: http://www.dodo-models.com/ and this is a photograph of the real thing; and links to the Royal Canadian Navy website: http://www.navy-marine.forces.gc.ca/en/fleet-units/mcdv-home.page There is even a paper model: http://www.navy-marine.forces.gc.ca/en/navy-life/youth-paper-models.page Going back to the Dodo Model, the kit is very comprehensive and highly detailed considering the scale of 1:700. This is going to be an entirely out of the box build (with probably one or two minor enhancements) which hopefully won’t take too long for me to do. The following photos show the model kit components: This is a 1:700 scale model so some of the parts are incredible small and it will be a challenge not to lose items to tweezer ping and the dreaded carpet monster. Update of progress to follow shortly:
moaning dolphin
This looks a nice build to follow, a bit of a change to your 350th builds! Best of luck! Bob

Forlornhope
Looking forward to seeing how you go with this. I have only bought Dodo's Armidale class PB's so far but I am in love with the kit( I have built 3 and have another 5 under construction) . Some of the pe is tiny but it really looks the part when finished. I'm also climbing the walls waiting for Dodo to release the Anzac class frigates. Sorry I got a bit off topic with this.
Paul E
As you might have gathered from the models I have shared on this site I like interesting and different and I am looking forward to seeing how this comes out. So I have started, cleaning the moulding of the hull first. The moulding is excellent and needed very little tidying up for mould lines and sprue extras. What follows is the initial painting and PE work on the hull: And on the mast: As you can see some of the PE is tiny and fixing it in place is quite challenging. Colours used are: Humbrol 32 - extra dark sea grey for the deck Tamiya XF12 Japanese Navy Grey with about 7-8 drops of flat white to a jar for the shipside grey. The Resin Shipyard provides a handy guide for RCN ship colours: http://www.resinshipyard.com/pages/colours.html More to follow soon.

Some of the pe is tiny but it really looks the part when finished. I'm also climbing the walls waiting for Dodo to release the Anzac class frigates. Sorry I got a bit off topic with this. I have an Armidale PB too and I will probably build that next. I have seen your models in Ready for Inspection and was very impressed. You are right about the pe though some of it is so small I can barely see it without my magnifiers. Don't worry about being off topic with regards to the ANZAC though, I am exceedingly keen on getting hold of one of those too.
Paul E
'Ere, that be small that be. Looks a bit like Echo or Enterprise in a way It's not small.............It's microscopic! Interesting that you should mention Echo and Enterprise. Hydrographic ships are not a common subject for ship models.
Paul E
Another update, I have now started adding the PE detailing lots of photos I’m afraid: I hate seeing these blown up pictures they are not very forgiving as they make my attempts at painting looking even shoddier than it really is. More to follow soon
Jockster
Wouldn't worry about that Paul, most of us are at that age where we hold everything at arms length just to focus on it!
Jockster
This puts me in mind of RB Productions 1/350 kit L.É Roisin, an Irish patrol boat I would have bought at Telford had there been money in the cash machine. Really got to pull my finger out and order it. I think I could go for this Kingston class too if it was in 1/350. It must be tiny in 1/700 if that mast is anything to go by! Rob 1
Looks good, nice little subject. Don't worry about close up photos; anyone who takes photos and displays them on a screen knows they have a habit of magnifying things that you literally can't see on the actual model with the naked eye, all the more so in 1:700. She certainly looks very good and tidy to me. Edited February 5, 2016 by Rob 1
Forlornhope
Nice work so far. I find the close ups are great with models this size, it gives me a chance to actually be able to see what it is I have just spent a couple of hours painting and what needs to be touched up. Getting off topic again, when you get to your RAN ships, that Tamiya xf-12 (without the white) can be mixed with either xf-14 or xf-76 which are both a similar grey/green colour but are a little too green for the RAN's storm grey colour. I can post a photo showing the difference between xf-76 and the Storm Grey. There is no exact match in the model paint world but its an Australian standard colour so those of us living down under can just go to the local hardware store and get some house paint for our ships. I can post a photo of an Armidale in Storm grey and one in xf-76 side by side as a comparison if you like. If you already have the colour sorted I'll shut up. Let the Kingston continue
Martian
Don't be so hard on yourself. It was only when I saw the mast against the pound coin that I realised just how small this thing is. You are making a fine job of this and let the pictures and updates continue! Martin

Paul E
Thanks for the vote of confidence with regards to the quality of finishing of this model. I have been progressing the photo etch detailing. Firstly I thought I would share an image of one of the fairleads that need to be fitted scaled against a 10 Pence piece for scale. As you might gather handling such a small item is quite challenging. I have added the railings around the foredeck, the davits and the life rafts: Progress continues.
moaning dolphin
Looking very nice, she sure is dainty though! I'm working with the same scale and it is . I find that I can only do short bursts at a time and then im like Keep up the cracking work! Bob

Forlornhope
Thanks for the advice for the RAN Storm Grey colouring. I will be starting my Armidale next and any reference material with regards to colouring would be most welcome. Kingston looks lovely, and very neat work with the pe. Looks like she will be finished in no time. In regards to Storm Grey, I have mentioned mixing XF-12 with either XF-14 or 76. below is a couple of 3d printed Armidales, one in the Storm Grey house paint alot of us use in Australia and the other in Tamiya's XF- IJN Grey Green. I don't have 12 or 14 but 14 and 76 are very similar but are too green. where XF 12 is not green enough so mixing in some 14 or 76 will give something close enough. I hope this is helpful and I am looking forward to seeing how Kingston finishes up. Wish I had the funds to be able to get one but all my time and funds go into my RAN projects Cheers Callum
Paul E
Nice work and rapid too! Trying to judge the size, am I right in thinking this is just 3 inches long? Lovely! Yes, thats right I measured it yesterday and it is just under 3 inches in length. There are some PE parts that are so small I cannot see them without a magnifier!
Paul E
Thanks for the advice on colours Callum, it is interesting see the differnces. I see it will be a challenge achievibg the correct shade but it will be worth it. The Armidale is my next project.
