cathasatail
Good evening all, I've been following some of the builds on this group build for a month or two and alas last night I decided to enter into it. So, here I am- my first group build! What am I building? Well, during the "black friday" sales the Airfix Gnats were on sale for about £2, so I got 4 of them! I have already completed one (as seen below) as "what-if" British Airways Gnat (Note: NOT PART OF THE GROUP BUILD!) On a more serious note, the relatively recent incident regarding Kevin Whyman and the Gnat Display Team has given me an idea of what to do with the other 3 Gnats: the red and white "striped" gnat and the yellow gnat on either side of my Avro Vulcan (hung from the ceiling) with Whyman's red arrows gnat ahead, nose up and soaring into the heavens. Things that I have noticed about the kit during my BA gnat build and a previous OOB build is that: A. The landing gear legs need to be fully secured before the gear bays are inserted into the fuselage B. The seats need to be painted before they are glued to the "back-walls" of the cockpit C. Pitot probe is sturdy but not invulnerable! D. The underside antennae can be damage easily, so be careful! -It is also worth pointing out that these gnats will be built with the undercarriage retracted so the gear bays aren't a critical feature. Cue the pictures!!!: Picture of the 4 Gnat kits (note the Vulcan mouse-mat, i'm a huge Vulcan fan ) British Airways Gnat (not part of the GB) British Airways Gnat (not part of the GB) The aforementioned Vulcan (done many years ago when I was entering into the hobby, painted with a grey that was too dark ) So, that's it for today! Thanks for stopping by Kind Regards, Sam Edited April 20, 2016 by cathasatail
CliffB
Hi Sam and welcome to your first GB! I'm pleased to see that you will be building 'wheels up' - an aircraft as beautiful as the Gnat deserves it Cliff
(ex)Sgtrafman
Hey Sam That's a mighty fine collection you have there! And the BA Gnat is pretty cool too. Good luck with the builds. Iain
Col.
Three!?! Show-off! Your own group build within your first group build. There's been a number of double builds going on within this one but I think you are the first with a triple build. Nice work on the BA Gnat by the way.
cathasatail
Good evening, A few pictures from last night- I have sprayed the cockpit floor and walls (as well as the fuselage interior *not pictured*) with Vallejo "light grey" and the ejection seats in "USAF medium grey". That's about it, plan for later on tonight/tomorrow is to start on painting the details on the seat (after giving them a matt varnish coat). -I wish I could show you more, but the joys* of Tsarist Russia, aldehydes/ketones and specialised exchange surfaces prevent me from doing so (A levels...) Kind regards, Sam *your experience may vary ( I genuinely do enjoy doing A levels) Edit: Apologies about the lighting/focus of the photos-for some reason there wasn't much natural light to rely on at 10pm last night.... Some people say I'm crazy but hopefully it will all pay off Sam
cathasatail
-Update (no photos yet-i'll post some at the weekend) the yellow and red gnats' fuselages and wings have had a general spray in their respective colours (dare I say, they look rather nice!) cathasatail
School has broken up for easter! Huzzah! I hadn't forgotten about this thread, don't worry So before the block of revision kicks in, time to get a move on with this build and finish it. cathasatail
See! I don't lie Cockpits fitted to the fuselage walls, gear bay walls have also been put in place- the wings have also been fully constructed (apart from the underwing tanks). (It looks a mess but it's an organised sort of chaos!) Also, the obligatory photos of a freshly-framed signed print of Vulcan XH558 Sam
CliffB
Interesting to see you working with parts on the sprue Sam and the results are looking good! Cliff
cathasatail
Me again I've got the three fuselages closed up, the cockpit has been given a brown wash and these have been cut from the sprues along with the wings. Apologies for the dire photos, I could do with some natural light.... Regardless, the RFI should have much better photographs, you can be sure of that Sam
cathasatail
Huzzah! We have three airframes joined up and ready for some filling/sanding and then preshading before I apply the outer coats of paint (red, yellow and then red/white). cathasatail
My gosh, 4 days for the GB to run and I suddenly realised that I haven't posted anything recently!!!! Fear not! The build has been completed, i've got a Vulcan to finish to hang the gnats on either side of it but that will have to wait for the Vulcan RFI Regardless, here we are (in fictional decals/markings, but in representative colour schemes of): the Gnat display team! (The Red Arrows Gnat really is red, I promise! (I've just done it in a different shade of red to the red/white gnat- in hindsight I should have made it a lighter red). Thanks for having a look, *First GB achieved!* *Woop woop* Sam
