Awesome sculpting..

Looks like most men ... Sullen ..

Thanks HOUSTON! Some of us are just misunderstood :hobbyhorse::lol:

Question for you: How do you clean up the burrs and tooling marks without damaging the details? Is it like Miliput or traditional clay where you can use water to smooth things?

Will

So far I've just been using my finger and some rake tools, when it comes to the final smoothing, with polymer clay you can use rubbing alcohol/surgical spirit and brush it over with a soft brush and it smooths over all tool marks and finger prints, water doesn't affect it.

Had a chance to grab my sculpt tools today and this is what I've done!

I started by neatening up the eyes and working the surrounding face atructure a little.

Then i had a crack at an ear! And it was much less frustrating than the eyes (surprisingly)

Started with an oval wedge, positioned it so it was tilted back slightly on the jaw line, with top level with brow and bottom just shy of nose level.

Then smoothed it in and using some reference photo calved out the detail with my ball styles tools.

So so happy with todays session, i love the last photo, he actually is starting to look human now!! Will neaten it up and copy it on the other side, which will be fun!

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

More ear work, carved out the ear more and worked the shape a bit more uising a reference photo.

Shaped out the other ear roughly but when positioned i discovered the jaw line on that side fell way short of the other side so i built it but with more clay before repositioning.

Tomorrow I'll work on getting it looking like the other.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Ha! Actually i think hes starting to look a bit like Yul Brynner!

Indeed he is! Perhaps the gunslinger from "Westworld" could be a future sculpt?!

Got the other ear sorted, roughed in the detail with a ball stylus then used a scalpel to thin it down and match the shape of the other one trimming where needed.

And just for the hell of it gave him a simple collar.

Next up I'll neaten it up, tweak here and there and make a start on his hair, not going to leave him a chrome dome :)

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Should he have a "helmet cap"? I don't know what they're called, but the thin layer over the head worn inside the NASA suits. Might get you out of the need for hair altogether.

I was going to do that (and for that very reason!) but I really want to have a go at it.

Im going to give him either a rough and ready 70's do or a classic 50's sci fi cut a la Dan Dare.

Hmm think he lost a little anger with my eyebrow placement, so i did a little surgery today.

I scalpeled into his brows from the nose creases 1/3 of the way and then pushed them towards the eye more.

Still need to lower the right a little more, and maybe shorten them both slightly.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Had a chance to sculpt a bit today, so I've tweaked the scowl a little more and made a start on his hair.

Rolled some polymer clay very thin and cut the side burn shapes with a scalpel and built up and smoothed over a basic crew cut base. From here I'll use tapered rolls of clay to give him a neat side parting which i will then rough up and give some hair texture with the tools.

So next up more hair work and I'll start thinking about his helmet.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Worked on the hair some more today, im basically laying down chunky locks which I'll refine later.

35884017495_2e2b56f3f1_c.jpg20160317_133940 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then came helmet frustration! I bought a round clear bauble which turned out to be too small, and after wanting a low egg shaped visor instead i bought an egg which was too large, so im expecting to find Goldilocks at home!

So the hair work will continue and I'll grab a slightly smaller clear egg, that was a 100mm one so now im thinking 80mm is the way to go.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Just a little update, think the main work on the locks is done, tomorrow I'll start working it with my tools to getvthe hair texture and add more fine details

Also just did a quick concept sketch of the helmet i have in mind, the tube shaped rim on the inside edge the arrows are pointing at is going to be a white tube light.

Clear helmet and a light inside because of course with all the trouble im going to sculpting his head i want to make sure is visible to the max!

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

The hair shape looks good. I'd been sort of imagining this sculpt as huge but I realised suddenly that his head can't be much bigger than Judge Anderson's head, which makes all the neat work even more impressive.

For the helmet, have you thought about plunge moulding one to get the corners and straight edges of the original? I think that showing more of the head is a good move, but I don't know if the round helmet looks as cool and aggressive as the squared off one.

You might be able to find some suitable blister pack as well, I'll keep an eye out :)

Thanks for the compliment Will, yeah all the zoomed in photos can make it hard to tell!

I've never done plunge molding so hadn't really thought about it, but I hear what your saying about it being more aggressive.

Think I'll stick with the shape (mainly because I've bought another damn egg that im.praying is the right size now!) but I'll tweak the design, lile morecdetail anf some angled panels on the helmet itself.

Hmm all food for thought, appreciate the input mate :)

Actually you know what screw it, I've got clear eggs coming out of my ears but Im just not feeling it.

Think I will have a crack at doing a plunge mold for a helmet with a more angled front like Will suggested, looked up some info on how to go about it and now I'll just need to carve a shape.

But for now I've done some work detailing the hair more with my scalpel and other tools.

It still looks a bit rough, I'll brush some surgical spirit over it after I've finished to neaten it up. I'll also use a stiff brush to stipple over and tie it together with a extra detail.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Looking good on the sides and back, I think the sideburns possibly have the grain running the wrong way? On my head (other heads are available, YMMV) the hair runs down almost vertical past the ear. So where you have it blend from diagonal to horizontal I think it should blend from the same diagonal at the same point, but to vertical?

This is a fantastic build and am hooked, but I gotta say I would probably have gone with a skull cap rather than the hair.it would be a nightmare having ones hair floating around when in zero g.

Jinkeys! Funny thing is just checked and so do mine, thats what happens when you get carried away with tools before checking your reference material! I'll smooth over and re work the detail on the burns when I start the stippling later.

Oh and FYI this is a very quick sketch of the sort of thing I'm wanting to do with the new helmet, angles on the visor & it will be more covered at the back and I think a couple of lights mounted at the base of the collar on each side. I'll still have the tube light on the inside, though I'm torn between white to light it up as is, or red/green for a more sinister look.

Thanks fatalbert really appreciate the interest! Yeah the original plan was to do a skull cap (and at the time I was relieved to not have to do ears or hair) but was enjoying the sculpting so much and its been going so well I decided I want to go the whole hog despite knowing it wouldn't be practical at all on a real suit.

Right sorted out the sideburns and got the hair flowing the rihht way!

And ive added more fine texture to the big locks i laid down, and using a toothbrush i brushed and stippled here and there for some finer detail.

So next I'll be smoothing the hair and rest of the head with some surgical spirit, and then i think im calling the head done. Its hit a point where i think its as good as i can get it so im stopping before i balls it up!

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Okay just a little update, brushed over some surgical spirit which got rid off all the little bits in the hair and the head is officially done.

I know its not 100% perfect but it's more than good enough for me.

So blown away by what I've accomplished, i really don't mean that to sound big headed, its just i really wasn't as confident as i may have seemed when starting this project. I'm very grateful for the interest and comments its had, really helped me to knuckle down and persevere.

Now its time to bake it to lock in the detail while i work on the torso and helmet collar, im praying the bake goes well checking out lots of info on it to make sure i don't screw it up.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)
