1/6 Spacebase 2000 Inspired Astronaut Sculpt

Okay so got a chance to work more on the gun

 

Got the green sprayed on the gun, whipped off the masking and thought it looked a little plain so I brushed on another shade of green and was much happier!

Then I went ahead and used some greenstuff to make the handle, which I sculpted directly into his hand

Once it dried I gave it a coat of the same enamel green I brushed on the rest of the gun.

I also made a start on a test for the laser beam, I've got two so I have a back up if it goes wrong!

 

I used my rotary tool to grind out a recess for my led, it melted a little hole in the side but I think the gloss gel I'm using will cover that up

So yeah blobbed a load of gloss medium in there and shoved the led in and then used a bit of wire to give it a bit of a laser flare effect

Only other thing I got a chance to do was to try in place when that had dried clear just to get a sense of how easy it will be to line it all up and I'm super happy with how it looks

Next I'll have to thread wires through the gun and get the soldering iron out.

Thanks! Its really nice to know the project hasn't been forgotten!

 

I've taken a break for the last few months, I've had a lot going on, but I'm wanting to get this finished soon, so there will be updates incoming shortly.

 

One of the main things I've been stressing about (a lot!) is the lights and electrics and I'm afraid to say this wont be lighted now after all. For my own sanity and wanting to see this finished I'd rather drop the electrics and ensure it gets done rather than be over ambitious and leave it on the shelf of doom while I stress about it!

 

I want to get it done quick as I've got another sci fi sculpting project I want to start, so there will be a lot more sculpting action to see after as well

My god, its an update!!

 

Time to blow the dust off and get back on it, started by just adding a bit of shading to the gun and painting a few little details (just some metallic grey bits and a bit of black on the barrel holes)

And I have painted a bit of the clear gloss gel onto the laser beam just to make it a bit more of a ‘rough plasma’ look (if thats a thing! )

Then I got it glued into the gun using more of the gel medium, and once it was dry I pressed s blob of green stuff into the recess of his hand and poked it over the protruding wire from his wrist to hold it all in position.

So next up going to add more greenstuff to the wrist which will be painted black to match the joint cover of the other wrist. I'll also get make a start getting the clear dome cut and in place.

 

So glad to be back on this, really want to push and get this done ASAP.

Just a small update today, I've sculpted and painted the wrist joint cover

And I've cut a new dome from one of the MANY eggs I acquired at the start of this, as the test one was very scratched and dinged

And thats just been taped together while the white glue I've used to hold it together dries

Next up I'll sort out the greenstuff padding that will act as its attach point and also give it a similar look to the other joint covers.

Don't want to give too much away, but I'll be doing another 1/6 scale full figure of a subject usually only available in miniature, and that's all I'm saying

Time for a small update

 

I've used some epoxy glue to get my two helmet halves together

And then I put some greenstuff around the inner rim of the neck recess so I can press the helmet into it to get a bit of an impression to help locate it (after first putting a bit of vaseline on it so it doesn't stick)

Then when it dried I have painted it black to match the other joint covers.

Next up I'm going to get add a little detail to the helmet, want to keep it simple though, I'll just cut the top lump off and then cover that and the seam with a strip of styrene before getting it stuck in place.

Also I know I said Im keeping quiet about my next project , but sod it I'm pretty excited about it! So what I'm going to do (or attempt to do!!) is a 1/6 scale T'au Fire Warrior with no helmet so you can see his face.

I'm hoping to be able to start it next month, I should have finished this guy by then (fingers crossed!) and I'm itching to get started on the new one, I even have a base with a glass dome i'm hoping it will fit inside.

 

But as I say that will have to wait till after I've got this one finished, and its only the backpack to sort out once I've done the helmet so not too long to go!

Love the beam going through the leaf/petal/plant bit, it really sells the whole thing! The pistol design is neat too.

 

Are you going to add any plant matter ejecta, or is raw plasma more of a hot cooking effect?

 

NB: No. 1 offspring will be very excited to hear you're making a giant T'au, she's very much in favour of their sneaky mind controlling ways

Cheers Will! I got lucky with the pistol, its a gundam machine gun which worked out as a pistol at this scale. 

The plants staying as is, yeah just want a burn/melt like effect rather than a blast.

Cool, I'm looking forward to it myself, I've never played the warhammer game or built much but I really like the t'au!

Update time!

 

Got the nub top bit cut off the helmet dome

And I've cut a strip of styrene to go over the seam, I gave it a black spray over the back as thats what will be seen through the helmet and then brushed over the armor colour on the other side.

I also painted the bottom rim of the helmet black just to hide the back of the bit of greenstuff I'll use to cover the edge when its in place

One other thing I did was mix some more red with some gloss medium to beef up the laser as it comes out the gun a bit more, which I was really happy with when it dried.

Next up I want to get the helmet in place, I know its going to have some small dings in it and not be a totally clean glossy helmet, but if hes battling carnivorous space plants left right and centre hes going to get some damage on it, so thats my excuse!

 

The end is getting ever more in sight!

Right so I got the helmet sorted now

 

I pulled off the tape and the styrene strip was stuck fine, however there was a little bit of over-spill from the epoxy glue, so I had a think after a little mild swearing and decided to give it a black edge, which would have the added advantage of also covering the mark where I cut the top bit off.

 

So it was out with the masking tape!

Then I got out a black rattle can out and gave it a spray

And once I removed the masking tape I was really pleased! Its a cool detail I wouldn't have thought of if the glue hadn't gone a bit astray so another happy accident.

Ah, thank you. I was just wondering, because the other day, while browsing a local charity shop, I saw a book with a cover showing the same piece of artwork that’s inspired this. So, (thinking of this thread) I took a look inside; the book was first published in ‘70, but the edition I found was from ‘75. I just thought it might provide an interesting tidbit of information the book was written by Harry Harrison, the same guy who wrote ‘Soylent Green’, and it was called ‘Prime Number’.

Oh cool! I just assumed that was the first published date, didn't realise it was actually originally done earlier. 

That's a good bit if info too about the author, Soylent Green is one of my favourite Sci fi movies, always love the moving euthanasia scene

Right! Update time chaps

 

First of all, I dont think I've mentioned before but my modelling setup has always been at my parents; mainly due to when I lived in a rental property it didn't have a big shed pr room for any of it.

So all my modelling has been done on my lunch breaks, which in all honesty hasn't been ideal, so now I moved into my own home that has a decent sized shed it was time to get my stuff over to my own shed (especially as I cant go round there due to the current situation)

So now its all in and sorted, and I can spend some lock down time doing my hobby!

Really happy with it, so much more practical too so should speed up my builds loads too which is awesome!

 

Speaking of which, spent the afternoon today makling a start on his back pack, so pulled out the styrene sheet and my scalpel.

All the bits are cut, I'm going fo a rectangle shape with a cit off sloping top panel as the base. The orange kids fruit pouch lid is going to be the jet nozzle on the bottom.

I also want the sloped panel to have a grill in it, so I cut some wire mech and an appropriated sized hole in the middle of it.

I do want to have some detail showing through so I stole/borrowed a couple of bits from the kids lego box (useless spare hub caps from a lego ferrari f-40) and decided to used them as fans.
