1/6 Spacebase 2000 Inspired Astronaut Sculpt

I reckon that suit colour will look even more amazing against the base once it's painted. What colours are you going to go for for the tentacles ? I'm guessing green but as its an alien life form the world is your oyster for that

Cheers Pete! Yeah I've actually given the plant colour a lot of thought, im a little torn.

Green would be good because it makes it obvious they are alien plants and its a good base colour to make the inner parts really stand out with colour.

But i do really want to make them very alien with a garish colour, im currently thinking im going to do them blue, and maybe airbrush on some darker blue (or some contrasting orange??) patterns to the petals and tentacles with purple blood/slime oozing all over.

RIGHT!!!! Im back on this!

Its been a crazy few weeks at work with a HUGE print job that had sapped all my energy used for modelling, but all the stress is gone so I can dip my toe back in the calming modeling water.

I wanted to fill some of the annoying little cracks here and there first just so thats done and I can touch up the base colour, so I slapped on some squadron white

And then after a bit of sanding with some 180 grit I retouched it all up

I really want to get the arm computer sorted to, so at work in illustrator I designed the little screen for it, it looks big here obviously but it will be pretty weeny on his arm so may lose some of the details. Tried to keep it retro as possible, and you cant beat the keypunch font for that!

This will be printed onto clear vinyl in reverse and stuck on the inside of the clear arm computer bit to give it a bit of depth like a proper monitor, I'll spray the back of it with some white just to diffuse the light a bit too.

So next up I'm finally getting a chance to get some primer and paint so I can start the arm computer and also start getting the base painted in its initial blue colour.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

That read out is so retro its back in fashion! :)

The whole thing looks fantastic.

Reminds me of a wonderful saying I heard recently

"It  makes you nostalgic for the future"

Cheers Andy!

I really like that saying, its like how the future of the 60s/70's was exciting, vibrant and full of adventure.

Whereas the future now is often shown as dark and dystopic and makes you feel fear rather than excitement!

We had Dan Dare, TV21 and Tomorrows world.

And now we have Cyber punk, Ghost in the shell and the net.

Hmm. Actually I like both ends of the scale.

And, look what I found out there...

Cool! I love the cover. Hmm, a spaceman shooting a laser at tentacles? Seems familiar but cant put my finger on it...

Every little detail makes this more like something from the works of the great Chris Foss rendered in to 3D.

Truly beautiful.

Cheers John, really appreciate the compliment mate!

Wow just checked the date of my last post! Sorry so much for being back on this 😏

Right so I painted the base blue, just gave it an all over coat just as a base coat, I must admit I was a bit dubious about the shade of blue when I painted it on but once dry I do really like it.

And I wanted a stark contrast with the coral like alien growths so I went with yellow

Basically the reason I've been a little flaky with this build the last couple of months is Im caring for an elderly relative which hasn't left me a lot of time, and not put me on the mood for modelling. So I'm easing back in with some brush painting so I'm going to get the base sorted, then do the figure and at that point I'll start the scratch building of the gun and backpack.

So next up I'll get the other yellow patch of growths done and then I'll start adding some shadows and variation to the tentacles.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Welcome back.

Slimy blue. I like it.

The yellow looks good too.

We've waited this long, a bit longer won't hurt.

DO NOT rush it just for us. You'll only regret it.

Cheers Pete, dont worry after all the effort I put in sculpting no way I'm rushing the paint job! :)

Just a quick little update, I've painted the inside of the open damaged flower and decided to go with bright red, as I was painting it I thought it looked a bit stark (still sticking with the contrasting colours) but the more I see it the more I like it. And I'm going for purple for all slime/blood.

More base painting next

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

now this is very cool. I also have a memory from it seems eons ago when I saw this illustration in one of two book of fantastic art work

I think one spacecraft from one century to another and featured I think flying cities, a swan inspired Interstellar queen and this illustration.

I thought this "spacer"blasting off  while opening fire was so cool I copied it and sent it in to "Take Hart" to hopefully appear in the gallery. It didn't of course, I suspect Mr Hart recognised the blatant "inspiration"!

Any how I cant wait to see the end result

Right so I have done a bit of painting here and there, I know I've said this TWICE now but seriously the situation I was in has changed and I'm now able to focus on this again.

This was the bit of painting I've fitted in in the past few weeks, I've started throwing some more brown on the actual figure and also added some dark red as an experiment and actually really like it so went with it here and there and may even add some to the torso sides, but I'll see when I get to that.

Next up I want to finish off the last bits of tentacle now I've got the figure bits painted where the are close/touching, and I'll copy the brown and dark red paint onto the other leg.

Thanks for looking, more soon (seriously!) :)
