1/6 Spacebase 2000 Inspired Astronaut Sculpt

Recommended Posts

Right so I started to get a little paranoid that I was going to drop the hands and ruin them, so I decided to just go ahead and cure them.

For small bits like these I tend to boil them rather than bake them, the way to go about it is get the water boiling and put them in for 4 minutes, its important not to put them in before its at a full boil as the sculpey can absorb water and fail to cure properly

And I had a plain bit in between the buds at the front, which is also where there is a lump which is the head of one of the support bolts that needs disguising. So I added some more of the spherical coral like growths to the area.

Then I wanted to add some more of the growths to the back to add more detail, again this was done by rolling balls which are then detailed with various sized ball stylus' to make the dents

You may also notice I dragged a wire brush over a lot of the vines just to add a base blanket of texture detail to break up the smoothness.

Next up I'll add more details and add the support tentacle that will be reaching up to his thigh.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Okay update time! I got the support tentacle sorted, I made a sturdy armature for it with thick wire and brass tube for strength

I pushed it into where I wanted it to go to make sure it would be on a firm standing

40560438074_5bce2030dd_c.jpg20180403_133752 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

and then drilled a hole to attach it to the guy

40378253705_e7df2c087f_c.jpg20180403_134123 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then just before I got it into position I rolled some more sculpey which I got really warm and soft in my hands so when I press it in it will conform to the support bits really well with no gap

Then it was just a matter of getting on the clay and smoothing together with my tools, and I added more vines and details to the base to disguise where I've smoothed it onto the base and also to give more support to its base.

I want it to look like its shooting out of the tangle of tentacles to grab you unawares! But it did look a bit weird on its own, so just to help I added a couple more tentacles as if the whole mess of vines is trying to get him

So I'm pretty happy with that, I feel like I've built up a good layer of tentacle vines which I'm looking forward to painting,  so I'll add a few little details and texture bits here and there and then its time to bake (dont panic!!)

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Time for a quick update, decided its time for this guy to boldy go into the oven once again.

But first I wanted to fill some of the big cracks which is easier to do with sculpey before baking than mucking about after.
So I rolled some clay into thin bits and pushed it into the crack and smoothed over as best I could to fill and hide them.

Then after wrapping his head and upper body in foil (not taking any chances with burning or more cracking!) I whacked him in the oven for half an hour at 130c.

40694372964_23c8b3c3b0_c.jpg20180411_131929 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

And after he cam out I'm pleased to say there are no cracks! I think thats mainly down to the detail on the base is all much thinner layers than the body, they do recommend on the pack not to go thicker than 1/4 of an inch as it increases risks of cracking.

39599313630_5816dc6cc6_c.jpg20180412_132127 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

So now for the dramatic bit, I started to cut away the rod in his back, and helpfully after some panic and stressful wobbling caused by the cutting, the vibration freed the rod from the inner nut and surrounding clay so I could just unscrew it.

And he's way more solidly posed than I thought he would be, there practically no wobble to him at all, so pleased to be at the stage where the armature can come away!

Its not the end of the sculpting though i have to sculpt the last open flower thats going under him, which will be baked and painted separately then glued into place.

So thats what I'll do next, get going on the flower and then all sculpting is done and dusted.

Thanks for looking more soon :)

Small update! I got started on the last bit of sculpting; the large open flower that will be under him.

I rolled out some sculpey and wrapped the armature, started with a thin layer that I could really press in to the wire to ensure good contact and a solid base to work on.

41539141922_3204d67bb1_c.jpg20180413_131253 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then I added another layer on top that I could smooth over

41579980941_5bbac579ac_c.jpg20180420_133942 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

And I poked a hole in it, this one is going to have its small inner mouth open with some smaller tentacles coming out

41579981661_f6fe32df44_c.jpg20180420_134340 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

And I made a start on the inner ridges.

26711701787_e23f47c647_c.jpg20180420_134802 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Next up I'll add the lip to the edge with more sculpey and neaten up the ridges.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Well if this guy was edible I think he'd keep me going for a few days!!

Update time, I've finished off the open flower

I started by rolling thin sausages of sculpey and smoothing them on the outer side to leave the same inner lip as on the first one I did.

Then I cut some triangles to replicate an open version of the inner mouth I created in the open damaged flower, and as I was blending them in to place I also used some surgical spirit to smooth the inner petals and remove tool marks

Then I put it in place just to see how it looks, and I'm pleased with it, it fills the big gap nicely and the base looks nicely detailed with it there

Once its baked I'll add some some thin tentacles coming out of the mouth, I'll make these with greenstuff.

Just a quick update!

I've boiled the flower now, so thats all done, just the same process as before plunged it for 4 minutes into boiling water

Think I'm going to paint his face first, for no other reason than I really really want to! So for now I've just given his whole head a light flesh undercoat to prepare for painting.

So next up I'll make a start on his face, following the "inside out" philosophy so I'll start with his eyes.  Feels good moving him onto the modelling bench and getting to put some paint on him.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Paint! I can't believe it's really happening! Swoon!

I really like that first primer pic, it's all making sense together now and looking really good. Also can my Tyranids come and play in your jungle?

NB: I think the above was inspired by your work with the ball stylus earlier in this thread :)

Cheers,

Will

Ooooo paint! I'm,actually excited :)

Me too!

Right, I've been working on the eyes, Im not much of a figure modeller and where I have done them its not been subjects with proper faces, I've only done eyes on a Groot and Rocket Raccoon model I built some years back

And I was pretty happy with how they came out so I wasn't too nervous at giving a go on my sculpt, but eyes can make or break a figure so I was a bit apprehensive.

I started off by painting the entire eye area white, and then carefully painted a black circle in both trying to keep them looking the same, this will become the black edge to the iris

27985026188_44269aab3a_c.jpg20180501_133605 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

So then I added some brown paint for the colour, taking it just enough to the edge to create a black line around it

27985025008_ae25229afc_c.jpg20180501_134404 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

I then added a slightly darker brown just to break up the colour a bit and also dotted on the pupils

27985023818_a912dc6a15_c.jpg20180502_131035 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

At this stage they do look very rough, but I think the key to eyes is the same as with sculpting in general, when you start they look crap but once you refine and neaten them up with paint thats when you start to see results of your hard work.

So with that in mind I mixed up a much better base flesh tone using enamel paint, and covered all the skin with a big brush and then started to neaten the eye area and define the edges more

41853572811_c48b67a97e_c.jpg20180502_132425 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

41853622421_8b2da9a291_c.jpg20180502_133054 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

41853567971_83ca369bcf_c.jpg20180502_133104 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then I neatened up the edge of the irises a bit more and added more white where I had got a bit of the flesh onto the white, I dont have fancy small brushes so for this job I actually used paint loaded onto an old airbrush needle!

27984960338_4e6864daa1_c.jpg20180502_133803 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

40954836285_0b8c56010f_c.jpg20180502_133819 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

And then used a cocktail stick (I clearly spend a fortune on tools!) to add the catchlight to each eye

41810848772_15e7bc9687_c.jpg20180502_134035 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

41810845622_8b238f68ed_c.jpg20180502_134044 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

So they are pretty much done, only thing I'll do, but not till the rest of the face is finished, is add a wash to the whites to make them more off white.

Next up I'll start adding shadows and highlights and make a start on his hair and brows.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)
