1/6 Spacebase 2000 Inspired Astronaut Sculpt

Recommended Posts

Not checked in for a while Hunter, but the progress you've made is amazing.

Liking the belt, very batman utility style. Perhapse could do with some holders, or pouches in it.

Keep it up, when you're finished you'll have a masterpiece on your hands.

Super stuff. Do you mind me asking do you have a fine art background, or do this for a living? This is next order stuff and I'm intrigued about where you learned your art. Keep it up - I always enjoy your updates.

Dont mind at all mate, I have A levels in art, but i wouldn't say i had a fine art background. I've always enjoyed painting and drawing but never really did any sculpture, unless you count the plasticine monsters/people i used to make for the stop motion animation films i used to make with my grandads cine 8 camera when i was twelve (loved doing that!).

Always wanted to be an artist since i was little but never made it to uni as the day before i was due to start at art school I took a job as a screen printer where i worked my way up to being the print manager and head graphic designer, so art was always just a hobby along with my modelling.

I think thats why this project feels so special to me as its a combination of my modelling and art in a way like no other build I've done, but it does make me wish Id taken the sculpture option on my A level!

Sorry for waffling on, like to be thorough in my answers, and i do really appreciate your interest in this mate glad your enjoying it.

Cheers Matt! Yeah kind of got on a roll with the legs, trying to keep it going for the rest. Think i will add to the belt, I'll give it more thought while im working on the arms :)

I have to admit it's getting better, a little better all the time.

Not that you're mine or anything! Nice progress, each new detail makes it more real. Are you going to do everything with clay or will you use styrene, brass etc. for guns and other mechanical bits?

Right I've made a start on the arms, haven't been near them since the joint covers so they need a little tidying

First i noticed a big dent in the upper left arm, so squidged some sculpey in the middle of it and smoothed it over.

Only other major thing to do is thicken the left forearm a bit as its slightly thinner than the right when i checked it.

But before i can whack it on i realised the left forearm is a little short so i needed to add some to the end.

Then i wrapped it around. The first few times i did this out of instinct i would leave the rough edge at the back but this then just makes it a pain to smooth it over. So its at the front so i dont have to awkwardly get behind it to much and risk poking my tools into his legs or body.

Evening chaps! Just a small update, I've started detailing the arm.

Started by marking out the design

Then carved it out.

I'll get the other carved out tomorrow.  Im thinking i might add some spring tubing between the upper and forearm as a kind of external power connection (??) That might look cool.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Thanks Andy! Its sculpey firm which is an oven bake clay.

Glad to hear your tempted, its a really fun thing to try, I would say all you need (apart from tools & clay! Lol) is determination and a desire to do it. All sculpting is, is a looong process of refinements and dont be put off by the look of the early stages. Its important to accept it will look crap when you start because thats the start point (sheesh look where this started!) then you refine it into how you want it to be and the best thing is if you really aren't happy just smooth it over and try again. Sorry to waffle on, I'm just having a total blast doing this and would love to see more people try it; I'm not an expert in any way shape or form, and genuinely believe anyone can get great results if they stick with it.

I agree, my beginner efforts in sculpting have been one of the best modelling experiences I can remember for ages.

It's really satisfying picking away at the shape seeing it grow, and even better thinking "I made that from NOTHING, I am a GOD!" afterwards.

Sorry, bit carried away...

Just a small update, detail to the other side of the arm is done

35750942461_40f4a139af_c.jpg20170327_134801 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

And here's a pulled back shot of how all the detail is looking together.

35882183835_1dbcfe65bc_c.jpg20170330_134538 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Pretty happy with how its all looking, Im getting to the point now where I've ordered the led neon tube for the in helmet lighting, so i can figure how its going to fit inside and where holes need to be.

Next  up its on to the torso! Im thinking of putting some spring tube down the side for power cabling details.  Hmm we'll see.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Cheers Matt! I've got quite a large (ish) stash of small spring tubes (which is good because they seem to be hard to find these days for some reason??) But thats a good shout, i may get some so as not to waste my tubes which i need for running wire to the leds.

Here's my springs, dug them out in readiness and to see exactly what I've got.

35042859374_32d3f2d77d_c.jpg20170404_132014 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

And also have given the computer on his forearm some thought. Found a clear sprue from the italieri 1/24 truck accessories set (tons of cool bits for bashing in there!) And the larger light cover looks perfect for what I'll need.

35072977873_baa6652c27_c.jpg20170404_132052 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

The fact its clear is a big bonus, all i have to do is print the computer detail I'll design in reverse on clear vinyl and stick it in the bottom, no cutting or mucking about, nice one!

Marked out around it on his arm

35072978093_a35ce05b0c_c.jpg20170404_132257 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

And gouged it out

35042834194_0e6f1f6213_c.jpg20170404_133700 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

I'll pretty much leave the hole like that and sort out any gap filling after baking when im doing the wiring and stuff.

Only other thing I've done for now is begin smoothing his flanks ready for some piping/detailing

35750933141_f8e6b3ecd3_c.jpg20170403_134448 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

So next up I'll continue with that and buy some guitar string! :D

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Okay, so while I'm waiting on the arrival of some heavy gauge steel guitar string, I've been neatening up his flanks and trying to sharpen up the edges on his chest armor.

Started by evening up his sides by removing an excess of sculpey on his right side, and roughing it up to help with smoothing.

35042805184_59e2655d86_c.jpg20170405_133448 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Did the same roughing up on the other side with the ball stylus to even out some bumps.

35841404606_62a1dc1f31_c.jpg20170405_133455 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

And i cut the end of the pointy bit to sharpen its edges.

35713012432_161ec48e32_c.jpg20170406_131039 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then the right side needed some clay to help with some low spots before slicing the edge to help with symmetry and again to get the edgs nice and sharp.

Im really pleased, its looking pretty sharp. Now i can start thinking about the details I'll add.

I keep thinking this can't get any better, then you add another little tweak and it goes up a whole level.

Thanks John, appreciate it :)

Okay so some goodies came in the post, my guitar string and the flexible led tube light so I couldn't resist looping around the inside of the helmet to give an idea of how it looks (excuse the very technical light blocking cushion!)

When it comes to sorting it out I may put some up the back of the helmet too coming up over the top of his head, but I'm pumped about how it looks anyway.

Then I wanted to add a little detail to the forearms with the guitar string, so I cut some lengths and dug out a recess

And poked them in using some blobs of sculpey to cover over the ends

Next up I want to build up a beveled edge around it, and then copy it to the other side.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Helmet illumination looks fab. Are you thinking of putting any details inside /outside the helmet?

Guitar string details look good too, very mechanical.

Matt

Thanks Matt, yes it will be detailed, im not leaving it totally clear all the way round, I'll add some stuff in a strip running up the back and some bits inside.

Had a little time to finish the left arm detail today.

Built up an edge with sculpey then neatened the hole and added some panel lines.

Just a quick update, was one of those annoying sculpt sessions where i spent a lot of time doing stuff that doesn't really show or look like much!

I did neaten up the panel lining of the arm detail.

35072842863_6c538e8364_c.jpg20170412_134505 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

After i did this i could get on with copying it to the other arm, but not before i had to spend a lot of time evening out bumps which as i said at the start took some time and needed doing but had minimal visual impact.

But anyway, started by cutting more bits of guitar string.

35072838483_7a367f0007_c.jpg20170419_132243 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then measured and checked position of the one on the left and marked it out on the right, then gouged out space for the string and poked it in.

35072837673_948b9f0ddd_c.jpg20170419_133035 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then i just put some sculpey over the ends and smoothed it all over and neatened it up.

So now I've done that its on to the flanks and more cable details.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Hmm need some opinions, when it comes to the hands  (obviously much later) i had a thought about using some 1/60 scale gundam hands off a freedom gundam i built many moons ago as a base for them.

Roughly put it in place and took a pic,  question is does it look too big? Im on the fence and think its okay but im not sure if my brain is taking the easy route, so want some impartial opinions
