1/6 Spacebase 2000 Inspired Astronaut Sculpt

  • 3 weeks later...

Well at last Spidey is done so finally I can devote my time to this guy again!

I've been thickening the chest section of armor, probably will bulk ot out further to incorporate a clear dome helmet, but still mulling on that.

Im already a lot happier with the shape, I'll bulk out the abdomen too to match and do some sort of belt incorporated crotch armor.

Started matching the top of the right arm to the left.

They are still very much work in progress, but next I'll work on the abdomen and sides of the torso. I want more of a bulky suit feel to him rather than anything too sleek.

Really enjoying this one and so glad to be back on it!

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

In that last photo you can really see the leaping-back pose, I wasn't sure if it read right before but it really does - maybe the addition of the shoulders and chestplate making the flow of the upper body clearer?

The head is still awesome, it's great you've got more time to spend on this now.

Cheers,

Will

Thank you Will!

Yeah the pose was really bugging me at shoulder level, and I think it was more that it looked less like he was looking down and just that he had a hunch back! But now the armor has been chunked out I think its defined pose of his upper body better

Been sculpting more, haven't moved to the abdomen yet, I've put the rough start of the forearm armor on by rolling out thin sculpey and wrapping it round

And worked a bit on the upper arms, removed the stepped ridge bit and extended them to keep them smooth.

Just want to keep it basic initially without worrying to much about final details till the end.

Other thing i did was make the head hole in tbe armor a bit bigger, want his chin to look less cramped and create a little space, i may eventually make the gaps round the sides wider too.

Also extended a section of the chest armor out a bit, this will probably be increased in width later when im sorting the helmet.

So its all systems go, I'll finish the other elbow joint cover and then move on to his abdomen next.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Don't get me started on the movie adaptation of that book!

I mean they gave away one of the main plot twists in the trailer when they showed Mazer Rackham was still alive....

anyway back ti to the build - this is simply awesome!

Looks great, will there be a gun in his right hand? The jumping up and backwards with a gun between his legs pose looks just about perfect for one. I have no idea why but  the pose reminds me of Enders Game (The book, not that poor effort of a film), the enemies gate is down!.

I never knew enders game was based on a book, I'll add that to my must read list!

Thanks Chief Smeg!

And rock yes he's got a gun in his right hand and in his left will be the comtrols for the big jet pack I'll build when he's done.

The pose is going to be him jetting away from an alien creature thats grabbed his legs and the gun will have a laser beam shooting through its exploded head.

The US navy issues a sort of special kindle to submarine crews and Enders Game is one of the books loaded to the device, apparently it was included because of the lessons that it teaches regarding tactics etc.

You both also need to read Starship Troopers (ignore the film completely it is nothing at all like the book).

I  loving this build though, you tantalised us earlier with artwork shots for his helmet, I'm looking forward to that part too.

Thats sounds great

There are about 9 or 10 books now i think, i really like them and i have the first 6 on audio book that are also really very good.

Not so keen on the books after 'Speaker for the dead', but I digress - just reread the post about the exploding head; this is another but I'm looking forward to now!

Forever War is an incredible novel - it really gets into the philosophical and personal implications of war in space, without skimping on gritty detail.

And the ending gets me every time.

Cheers,

Will

Had some more sculpting time, I started by rolling some thin bits of clay for the left elbow joint cover, and the used a sharp tool to blend it all together.

And then i started bulking out the abdomen,  rolled a bit of clay and cut a shape to conform with the edge of the chest armor and blended it in.

Oh yeah and i also added a rough belt, which may just end up being the top of his crotch armor.

Im pleased i got the original details smoothed over and tied together his torso more, makes it easier for me to look at him and think about how i eventually want him to look.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Began working on his lower half today, started by rolling out a big ball of clay very thin with between some non stick paper with a rolling pin.  Try to speed myself up a bit, i tend to use a bit at a time but i figured if i roll out a big piece first its quicker to cut bits from there

35752013551_ef5b989339_c.jpg20161123_132116 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Cut it up to get some sections to make thigh armor, and off cuts for the crotch armor

35495422150_1eaacfee68_c.jpg20161123_132448 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Started with a triangle at the front and basically laid bits down to make my shape and then smoothed it together to create the armor.

Next up I'll shape his crotch and back bot more before doing the thigh armor. Think I'll make the bit between his legs slightly narrower too, seems a little wide now i look back at it.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Right first thing i did was sort out the tricep area of his right arm as i noticed in the last photo it's dented in, so i smooshed some clay there and smoothed it over.

Then it was on to smoothing and shaping the crotch armor and blending another belt in place.

Again i know at this stage its very simple looking, im just trying to create a blank canvas as a start point for details, some that will be sculpted others that will be added after baking in other materials.

Then after rolling out the rough start to the thigh armor i noticed a problem; his left thigh is smaller than the other. Which i think is because of a soft bend in the knee joint, so....

35074059433_e1390914af_c.jpg20161124_133837 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

... time to break a leg!

35074041183_17388696c4_c.jpg20161124_133926 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Basically cut a bit of sculpey away and jammed my needle nose pliers in to get a nice tight bend. Then added more clay and smoothed over mainly from the front to preserve the acute bend and help get the thigh to the correct length.

Didn't really get a chance yo do much today, only little thing i did was widen his neck hole.

I think i may also thin the top of the armor where it comes over his shoulder, it will make sorting his helmet a bit easier with a little more room to compensate for his downward looking pose.

So I've been sculpting more, once again been distracted away from leg armor by something else! Ive thinned the armor over his shoulders and top of his chest.

Used some wire to slice away some sculpey and used the tools and my finger to remove shape and smooth.

All was going well till this happened! Obviously the top layer wasn't pressed in enough so the tool i used just ripped it away.

35714143382_eb628c9522_c.jpg20161129_133728 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

So then it was a matter of building it up and shaping it back to how it was, but thinner obviously. Made sure i roughed up the underside and smooshed it in with the tools to be damn sure that wont happen again.

Soooo now after a touch more shaping I'll be doing the legs next. Glad i did that though, feels better to me now and just like widening the head hole it will help give a bit more space when I'm doing his helmet.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)
