1/6 Spacebase 2000 Inspired Astronaut Sculpt

Recommended Posts

He's all baked! No going back now the detail is all locked in.

Looked around at some baking tips and from what i read its pretty straightforward. For now as its only a bake to protect detail, I've stuck to the standard 15 minutes at 130c for every 1/4" of thickness. But apparently baking longer is recommended for strength by a lot of sculptors so I'll do that on the final bake.

Had to trim the threaded rod to get him in the oven and there was some darkening of the clay but that's good apparently the darker it is the stronger.

I've started back on him now, nothing spectacular to show, just blocking outvthe torso. The slight collar is just a rough guide to see where i want the helmet to go.

Been adding and smoothing on the torso today, built it up and then smoothed it over as a base for my firm start on the spacecsuits armor plating.

New tool im using for raking is an old (and washed!) nit comb. Im using as a rake to smooth over bumbs with a cross hatch patern wich i smooth over with my finger.

Next up I'll start building up and defining some areas of detail like the shoulder pads and chest plates.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Okay been working on his neck line and chest. Wanted to define the neck of the spacesuit more, and start to shape outvand build up his chest armor.

I drew a line with my ball stylus to mark it then after putting a sausage along the line i blended it a bit, bulked out the area with bits of clay then used a large ball stylus to blend it all

I also started to build up the crotch a bit more, and i trimmed his shoulders back, I'll add the pads later for now i want to get his look right.

Next up I'll build up the torso with more armor and smooth what I've done so far.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Been busy with other things and haven't touched this guy in a week but have got some more done today, smoothed out the chest armor and started to add more armor to the torso and build up the crotch a little more.

So the torso is starting to shape up, going to continue adding to it and building up the design.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Okay I have been working on this, but not much to show, the frustrating thing about sculpting I've found is I can spend ages just smoothing things out and adding small amounts of clay and at the end it doesn't look all that different in photos!

I'm still building up the torso and groin area, and started to shape out some side paneling ready to be backfilled with clay and smoothed over.

Next up I'm going to go for a slightly different approach, I'll start adding clay to the whole thing and work on it all together. It'll help me keep an overall sense of proportion and it may also speed things up!

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Looking good he's coming along nicely. Ive never sculpted a figure before but now his shoulders are taking shape you can get a better sense of where you want his arms to grow from, same goes for his hips & legs, im looking forward to seeing more

Had a good read through this Hunter and have to,say it's going really well mate. As others have mentioned it's really enjoyable ( and informative ) to watch a blob of clay turn into a finished head sculpt and I'm looking forward to seeing the body develop too.

Looking great so far mate and I can't wait to see more. Don't worry about the time it takes, as long as you are enjoying it that's all that matters and it seems you are having a blast as your enthusiasm can be seen in the work

Cheers Bob, glad your enjoying it :)

this is all waaaay beyond me. Never seen the process done before, cool!

Thanks I always like to make sure my WIPs are fairly thorough and I like showing something a bit different. And trust me its still a learning curve for me too!

Cheers Pete, I must say I know its me doing it, but it is very satisfying turning a brick of clay into something! Really appreciate the kind words, I always take any interest in my work as a big compliment :)

Got the clay out and continued working on him, I've built up the sides of his torso.

Made a sausage and followed the line of the other panelling to create an edge then backfilled with a rolled piece of clay roughly shaped to fit.

Then i raked the surface and smoothed it over

So glad i read up on the raking technique, it makes leveling and smoothing a breeze.

I've also started building up the limbs, so the body is starting to feel more alive now.

Think i need to build his chest up a little more, looks a little flat, and I'll continue building up the arms and legs.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

The proportions of the body are beginning to come together nicely. Can you put something in the next update with the figure to give and idea of scale please ? I know how big 1/6 is but can't visualise it in your figure
