1/6 Spacebase 2000 Inspired Astronaut Sculpt

Recommended Posts

Ive ben refining the face a bit more, shaping it out, building up the face. I took the eye bits away, going to work on the rest of the face first, think i jumped the gun a bit.

I put ears on but very rough theyll be covered by his balaclava fire protection.

Looking good there.

I did a 1/6 astronaut when I was at college. For his head I bought a cheap Action Man type figure for 50p and ISISed him, repainted and added balaclava - saved a load of time and frankly much better than my sculpting ability.

Cheers Graham! Initially i had looked into a 1/6 head sculpt, but decided i want to just go for it and sculpt the whole thing.

Even if the end result is only average looking I'll be very happy knowing that i did the best i could and gave it a go.

That's starting to look the part now, wish I had your sculpting skills.

Matt

Thanks Matt, appreciate the encouragement :)

Im waiting on some tools to arrive at the minute, loop cutters arrived today but a set of ball styluses are still in the ether! More soon though

Right so this happened

Yeah i wasn't happy with where it was going and i think the proportions got a bit out of whack.

Started the face again this time i think i want a more stylised (but not cartooney) look tonthe guys face rather than realistic.

New tools arrived, used one of the loop tools to gouge out the eye cavities.

And used various tools and my fingers to smooth out the face try to keep it even, while building up the brow and structure of the face.

Very happy at this stage but looks a little cone head so carved a chunk out the top with a scalpel and smoothed it over.

This was about an hours work, doesn't really show in the photos! Still working it and refining it, I'll build the top of the forehead out next and start to sort out the mouth. So much happier with the new direction!

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

The new face is beginning to look better than the original one, is it going to be like the picture and have a helmet on as well?

Thanks Knikki, yes he will have a helmet, but not like the picture, going to do a round one that's mostly clear

interesting build/sculpt, il keep an eye on this. defiantly looking better than other one.

Cheers dude :)

Okay so I've got the head to a basic shape I'm satisfied with now, the ball stylus tools I purchased are worth their weight in gold as they have allowed me to blend and detail so much easier.

He's got a slight gorilla forehead going on at the minute, so I built that up with some clay and blended it in

And the cranium is more narrow and still slightly pointy looking so I gave him some ear muffs and smushed (?) them in

I'm over the moon with how its looking now, this is my first go at a head sculpt so its all a learning process and I'm having tons of fun with this project. Now my basic structure is sorted today I'm going to start adding details, going to add the nostrils and build up the cheeks a bit and work on the mouth.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

That's getting really good, especially the nose from the front. The profile looks a bit off though.

Have you got some reference? From watching character artists back when I used to work in an office, they usually have one or two real people (often celebs!) in mind when creating characters, and plaster their workspaces with print outs and close-ups.

Cheers,

Will

Thanks Will, yeah I know what you mean its a bit flat at the minute, I'll work on that when I do the nostrils.

I do have some print outs for reference, I even did some scale shots of my own face pulling the expression I'm going for! And I have a mirror to hand too. But I'm trying to avoid making him look like anyone in particular (especially myself, I'm not that vain! haha)

I'm focusing on referencing details rather than an overall look, I cant put my finger on it to explain but I want a stylised thin gaunt kind of look like the character designs in the PS2 game Timesplitters 1, but maybe not quite as extreme.

Did a little bit of sculpting on my lunch break today.

Worked on the nose and mouth, for the nose i just added clay to the nostrils and to the front and blended it round with the ball stylus

The mouth was made by blending in a couple of sausages of polymer clay. I still need to build up the edges of the cheeks a little so i can do the indents at the edge of the mouth and nose.

Apologies too for the lack of that many steps in my photos, when im concentrating its hard to remember to stop and take a pic, maybe I'll post a video at some point.

So next up its cheeks and roughing out the eyes.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Oh cool,i really like that. I always enjoy artwork where you can see the work, like thick brushstrokes or sculpture like this where they've left the surface rough.

Its funny you should share that pick because the ball stylus tools leave this really cool textured finish which i was tempted to leave unsmoothed; but don't think it will suit the overall feel.

Thanks fatalbert! Well he'll be getting grabbed by an alien so theres not much to smile about

Did some more work on this today, wanted to work on the shape of the lips a little more, and define the philtrum a little better.

Also want to build up the nasolabial sulcus more and the area around it, while also refining the shape. Just added some sausages of clay and use my ball stylus tools to blend it in.

Also need to sort out the chin a bit, as its a bit weak and not very defined, so i stuck a ball on the chin and blended it.

Shaved some clay off from under the jaw too to make the chin area more definitive.

Im really happy with his profile now, only things i want to sort out tomorrow are to even out the symmetry of the lower jaw, and build up the cheek area behind the nasolabial sulcus.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

I've loved that pic of the "close shave" when I first saw in waaaaaaaaaay back in the day. You're doing a great job capturing the essence of it.

Thanks GMK appreciate the kind words :)

Profile is looking so good now - full of character.

Thanks Will, im so pleased with it, so much so that im not covering the head in any way. Im going to go the whole hog and do his hair and ears too, in for a penny in for a pound!!

Done more work on the cheeks and around the mouth, it was looking a bit weird and i couldn't put my finger on why; then after checking reference pictures of faces i realised the mouth was too small so I've widened it and am much happier with it now.

I worked on the left side first and in pic 4 i took a front shot to compare the fleshed out version with how it was

Still need to work on matching the shape of the right side to the left, and once that's done I'll bite the bullet and start the eyes (which i so haven't been putting off!!)

Thanks for looking, more soon :)
