Hi all,

I want to cast this in resin.

I have never done any casting before. What's best way to make a mold for this shape?

Thanks for any help,

Gareth

Is it the same all round? Anything special about the end tips?

What size is it?

Presuming yes & no, and assuming approx 75mm to 100mm

Make a box shape out of Lego. About 2 cm taller than that is long, and wide enough to give about 1 cm clearance all round. Pad the bottom of the Lego box with either plasticene or blutack - to cover up the studs.

Add a thick bit of sprue about 1cm long to bulbous end of subject.

Push this sprue end into the plasticene.

Having got some two-part rubber. Mix the necessary amount and pour into the box.

Pour just a little down the subject to give it a very thin coating. The rest is poured into the void around subject.

Once filled gently tap the box continuously for 3 or 5 minutes or longer till no more air bubbles are seen to rise.

Then let the rubber set.

After its set the subject should just pull out of the rubber mould.

** You may need to put a scalpel cut into the rubber to allow the bulbous part pull out.

Use a scalpel to carefully make the hole a V shape.

Mix up resin and pour into the mould.

Pour a little resin in first, rotate the mould and let this resin coat the sides, then fill up.

Squeeze and tap the mould until no more air bubble are seen to rise.

Let resin set.

Copy should just pull out of mould just as subject did.

A brief explanation.

Based on assumptions.

More data required.

Hi,

Thanks for taking the time to reply. The piece is about 140mm long, and has a hole in the end where the bulbous bit is. I need to preserve the hole. This has given me a good idea how to proceed.

Thanks again,

Gareth
