Hosbabon
Having failed, spectacularly to finish my Stuka for the BoB group build, i find my self here with the push to carry on ! My "story so far" can be found here : Ju 87 B-2 Stuka ~ Italeri's 1/48 ~ My first GB The last post i made had construction almost complete I then moved onto the masking of the cockpit and getting down a coat of Tamiya Primer, in light grey. This was then followed by some pre-shading. I used my new airbrush, an Iwata Neo, for the first time to pre-shade. As you can see I'm certainly in need of practice. I was initially concerned about covering it and how it would look. I then moved onto spraying the underside. I used XF-23 Tamiya light blue, which is supposed to replicate RLM65. I mixed the paint very thin using tamiya thinner (x-20A). Again as a novice to airbrushing i considered water as a thinner, but lacked any knowledge or experience to make a judgement. The results: All in all, I'm happy with the results. It took many coats to get the effect i wanted, but the preshading is only just visible, giving a worn and weathered look. Next step is to mask off the underside and onto the top-side camo Comments and criticisms always welcome
AnonymousDFB1
Looking good and Welcome to KUTA, although you only have a week and a bit before KUTA is over, but the threads will remain open.
Hosbabon
Progress has been very slow but steady and the end is in sight ..... all be it not in time for the KUTA ! I initially roughly masked off the top side came for the RLM 71 which went down well. I then re-masked and re-sprayed the RLM 70 .. My thinking in relation to masking both colours was to try and preserve the pre shading. However in hindsight i didn't spray enough of the first colour leaving primer visible where the patterns join. this is evident on the wings. Im chalking it down to experience but hopefully in weathering and post decals i can perhaps hide this somewhat with a filter. This picture also shows the coat of pledge i applied ready for declaring, hence the shine. Ive started with the decalling, which is going well. I am using both micro sol and set to eliminate silvering and embed the decal. The underside is complete and I'm most of the way through top side generic ones. Unfortunately its going to take a few more sittings to complete the model so I'm missing my second GB deadline ! Im determined to finish if only to start my P-47 !! Hosbabon
Thanks for the extension ..... Well the decals are done .... Its been a time consuming two nights using the micro sol & set fluids but they've gone on without any silvering. They do look a little too stark in contrast against the camo scheme, so i am going to try spraying a very fine filter across the top side to try and blend them. Im not sure how to attempt this, either a super thinned down umber, or perhaps grey? I also have a colour from vallejo called smoke which i may try. Or i may go with the clay based panel line wash first. Ill sleep on it and decide. Ill allow the decals to fully dry and seal tonight, then filter / wash tomorrow hopefully ! Hosbabon
I decided to go with a watered down Vallejo smoke colour over the entire top side to blend the decals and camo together. I also thought it may add to a 'used' appearance of the aircraft. I also applied a clay dark dirt wash over the top side and removed the majority with a damp kitchen towel and cotton bud. The results weren't too bad ... I've since the photo; touched up some details, redone the main undercarriage and also added some pastel weathering. This involved rubbing a pastel across sandpaper then using a brush to apply it along the walkways, exhaust and lightly streaked across the wings. Tomorrow its matt varnish, fit canopies and the end is in sight !
Hosbabon
A hair's breadth from finishing ! I still have the ordinance and radio operators machine gun to fit, along with the antenna wire but I'm pretty much finished. I'll post up some better photographs, once finished, in the ready for inspection area, over the weekend once done. By way of conclusion, my third model has been a long slog and taken much longer than i would have liked, the interruption of all those real world priorities !! Its been my first use of PE parts and consolidated upon my novice airbrushing skills. As a build, this Italeri kit has been challenging in parts for me, certainly in comparison to the Eduard and Tamiya forerunners. There are certainly areas I'm disappointed with, e.g. i have a tiny amount of primer bleed on one of the canopies, my finished fit on the engine cowling and forward canopy etc.; but on the whole i feel I've learnt and enjoyed the build. Next week I'm into the P-47 build so it all begins again !! Thanks for taking the time to view, as always comments, tips, tricks and feedback always appreciated
