Airfix Vampire T11 ***Completed***

Lets see if I can get one more done before the end of the month.

This sad beastie has been hanging around for awhile. I made a start, but then managed to lose the canopy (Airfix kindly sent another but it took awhile to get here) and I felt like I made a bit of a botch with the intakes. Whatever, its languished on the shelf for over 2 years. When I took it out to have a look I realised it wasn't actually too far from being finished. So I had a quick tidy up of the seams, with some judicious use of Mr Surfacer 500 and then the main fuselage was ready for paint.

I decided to go with WZ507, so started by putting a couple of coats of white down where the yellow was to be, and the followed up with a couple of thin coats of yellow (all brush painted Tamiya acrylics).

We are having yet another hot day here in Perth, and I know from bitter experience that that does not go well with spraying paint outside (which is what I normally do with silver finishes), so instead I decided to risk brush painting the metallic coat (flat aluminium as it happens as that was what I had to hand).

Close up on the cockpit, which reminded me that I actually did have some fun with this before abandoning it.

Another thin coat of Tamiya XF16 and then I removed the masking tape. Not too bad, just a few bleeds and some paint ridges that need some attention.

Thanks Mish. As I get into this I wonder why I left it on the shelf. Some more photos of the cockpit:

A couple of brushed on coats of floor polish to make the surface glossy and then started to put the decals on. In the background are the partially masked and painted canopy parts - which was the state I left them in when I abandoned the build last time!

Decals almost all done, anti glare panel (which I had forgotten) added. Love the way the codes for the undersides are split to fit on the undercarriage doors, simplicity itself to position them.

I gave the undercarriage and wheel wells a light wash with raw umber acrylic diluted with floor polish, not too much as I guess this aircraft is kept pretty clean.

Almost done. I glued on the front and rear canopy parts by carefully touch a brush with Tamiya thin cement to the edges when they were put in place - capillary action took care of the rest. I left the main canopy un glued. After protecting the decals with a coat of floor polish and added a light panel wash of dilute water colour - just enough to highlight them slightly as this aircraft appears very clean in photos I have seen of it. I then sealed that in with a coat of Humbrol Mattcote and glued on the undercarriage, which is a little on the fragile side so I left it "off" its wheels for a day to allow everything to cure. Almost all done, just the navigation lights, pitot and a gloss coat to finish. More photos in RFI when I get home from work.

Feeling very satisfied - that's three shelf sitters cleared this Christmas :-), and I am really happy with how they have come out. Thanks for following.
