Alex1978
As in the last few days some MD-11's WIP threads had been opened here, and these projects are looking very promising,I thought I will join in and start on my Authentic Airliners kit. Kurt's MD-11 looks just awesome, with lots of details and having already built his DC-10,here in my RIF http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234984604-authentic-airliners-dc-10-30-african-safari-1144/ I know this will be a smooth build. Here are some pics of the kits parts and the decals I will use for my MD-11. Some decals are still missing but will be ordered shortly, like the windows and also the coroguard panels for the wings. Fuselage, wings and stabilizers... Some small parts as engines, flap tracks, winglets Landing gear, the main gear is also included as white metal parts...and my favorites...tiny little etched parts Heres what she will become once finished... This build will be probably a bit slow as I am currently working on a few different kits simultaneously and this one being put in between... Updates will follow probably later this week Cheers, Alex
Darren Rhodes
Superb Alex! Subscribed! Great to see this on the work bench and the first time I've seen an Authentic Airliners kit up close. Detail looks impressive. Excellent decals too, that's the earlier scheme than mine so will make a fine compliment! Darren
Alex1978
It has been a little bit longer for my promised updates on my MD-11 build. Work interfered as well as some other ongoing builds that are in different stages of construction. But here we are now. All main parts are cleaned off the sprue leftovers, sanded and cleaned with thinner and washed with soap and water. Some parts like engines and the wings are partially build.Winglets are on and the tail engine is glued together as well. The exhausts on all engines can be installed after painting is complete since the fit of them is so well that just a tiny bit or even no glue is required. Next step will be building up the landing gear and put on the etched parts before primer. The tailcone needed a little bit of sanding and a small gap had been filled by using a bit of evergreen and glue. Then sanded smooth. This was not an issue with the kit itself, rather a mistake by me sanding the parts unevenly Most of the parts can be painted before putting together, that way it safes lots of masking. Here some images of the ongoing production... Cheers, Alex Tail engine just mounted to check the fit.Its flawless and it can be mounted without glue,so its perfect for transportation. The tailcone was the only part that needed little work...due to my mistake Just to see how it will look later... Cheers, Mike Welcome on board. I should be able to make more progress on it from now on,so updates will be coming up faster. Just recently got my Kenya Airways 707 and my 747 Prototype off the production line,so space is free now for the MD-

Darren Rhodes
Excellent, great to see some progress, in fact looks like you're ahead of me And those photos of the engine will help me out immensely with scribing my Welsh Model engines. Alex1978
Excellent, great to see some progress, in fact looks like you're ahead of me And those photos of the engine will help me out immensely with scribing my Welsh Model engines. Darren Thank you. I guess the Authentic Airliners kit is a lot easier to build than the welsh.I follow your build as well and it looks like a lot of work but its going to be a great result,I am sure. I have the Welsh kit as well but I am using bits and parts of it for another project I am currently working on... Should you need more pictures of the Authentic Airliners kit as reference for your build, let me know.I will gladly help you in your quest.
Alex1978
Some more progress on the MD-11 the last few days. As I had currently finished two other kits and working on other projects as well, this is,as mentionend, a bit of a slow build but we make some progress here All parts received some light coats of primer. Now the main work starts, the paintjob... First will be the white applied on the upper fuselage and engines, this by my usual Tamyia Pure White from the spraycan. The wings as well as the lower fuselage will receive some light coats of aluminium. The coroguard panels will be done with decals from Nazca.

Alex1978
how you getting along mate? Hi phil1, Progress is pretty slow at the moment because I have a lot of work and not much time for modelling. What happend since my last update; - Gave her a gloss white upper fuselage and the engines also received some coats of white - Wings have been painted aluminium. The coroguard panels will be done with decals from Nazca. - I ordered a set of window decals from Authentic Airliners Next step will be painting the nose flat black and give it the famous "curve" for the classic Delta livery. Then the lower fuselage will be painted in aluminium. I hope I will be able to continue on her the next couple days and then I will also post some more pics on the progress. Alex
Alex1978
Some time has passed since my last update. Work and other ongoing builds have put this one on hold for a few days. But here we are and progress has been made. Most of the paintwork is done and the main parts are assembled. The next step will include the landing gear and the fiddly etched parts for the gear and the fuselage.Painting of the wheels is almost done as well. The build was very pleasing so far with no problems and also the painting went down smooth. Kurts window decals have arrived as well to give the MD-11 the "real" look. The only decals that I need to order are for the coroguard panels,I guess in the next few days I will get me a full detail set for the DC-10/MD-11 from Nazca. Once all the stuff has arrived, it will soon be decal time. But first some details will need to be added to the paint and one coat of gloss has to be applied as well as polishing prior to decal application. Thats it so far for now. Here some pictures on the actual stage. Cheers,

UpperDeck
Hello, very nice build going on here. I have the DC-10-30 kit from that brand and the MD-11s and TriStars are sure on my purchase list in the coming months. Great Flight Path decal sheet, I have a few and like these old style sheets a lot. Impatient to see the next steps on this splendid kit, great job until now, well done. Out of curiosity, do you have a WIP of your Safari DC-10 kit ? I searched but did not find it. Thanks in advance.

Thank you very much.Yes,the Authentic Airliners kits are great and a joy to build. The TriStar is also on my "to buy" list. I also have a DC-8-50 and an Airbus A-310 of them in my stash waiting to be built this year. No,for the DC-10 I did not make a WIP,just a RFI. The next few days should see some more progress and update pics here if everything is running smooth and work won't interfere too much.
Alex1978
A small update on the MD-11 build. Most of the main decals are on,now its going to be the details as soon as they will arrive. After all decals are applied,a coat of clear will be sprayed on to seal them and give an overall glossy finish. Next step will be the landing gear.I wanted to build it at an earlier stage but I was not in the mood of dealing with the little etched parts that come with it.So in the next few days I will start on them along with the main assambly. Here some impressions on the actual stage; Cheers Edited March 26, 2016 by Alex1978
