JohnT
I am sure that this will have been asked and answered already but when did they come off? I am planning on doing a 91 Sqn Spitfire XIV E serial RM656 which was lost on 2 or 3 August 1944 (depends on which ref but most say 3 Aug) and having seen photos of other 91 Sqn machines at about the same time in July with the full works I am assuming that she would have had the same as at that date. Some later photos appear to show "half" stripes but I am guessing that would have been well after August that the change came in? Also some 91 Sqn spitfires had their aircraft codes at least partially painted over and then some did not. From what I can see I think DL-F RM656 still has her codes showing. I have bought the Osprey book on 91 Sqn but its still to arrive and hopefully there will be some useful info inside Thanks in advance for any assistance John T
JackG
I'd go by the period photos you have found for the particular squadron, but if you are looking for specific dates to back things up, maybe this site: http://www.crazyhorseap.be/Mustangs/Mustangs/Invasion%20Stripes.html Yes, has been discussed here before as well, but have to skim through some arguements to find particulars: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/73072-d-day-invasion-stripe-markings/ From the above, the late Edgar does provide the date 19-8-44 for removal of stripes from wing surfaces. regards, Jack
