stevej60 Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 Just catching up Stix, cracking job on those stripes! 1
GREG DESTEC Posted March 16, 2016 Posted March 16, 2016 Hi Stix, i like that tone of silver you have there, not too glossy. I recon this will look great if you go on the way you've started here. Patience is the key, its hard to do waiting on coats of paint to dry but i recon it will pay dividends. Keep up the great progress. Cheers Greg 2
rob85 Posted March 16, 2016 Posted March 16, 2016 Nice stripes stix! And brilliant start to the NMF! really smooth as usual.... He looks on enviously! Rob 1
PlaStix Posted March 17, 2016 Author Posted March 17, 2016 Just catching up Stix, cracking job on those stripes! Thank you Steve. Hi Stix, i like that tone of silver you have there, not too glossy. I recon this will look great if you go on the way you've started here. Patience is the key, its hard to do waiting on coats of paint to dry but i recon it will pay dividends. Keep up the great progress. Cheers Greg Hi Greg. You are so right about being patient - as soon as I try and rush to apply the next coat some of the paint underneath will come away. Nice stripes stix! And brilliant start to the NMF! really smooth as usual.... He looks on enviously! Rob Hi rob. You are too kind! As I usually say on a Thursday - 'Only one day in the way until the weekend!' Kind regards, Stix
PlaStix Posted March 21, 2016 Author Posted March 21, 2016 (edited) Right......I am slowly dragging this towards the finish line. I have now got the Olive Drab areas painted on the top of the fuselage plus the whole aircraft has been given a coat of Citadel's Runefang Steel. It's gone on reasonably well but I had a few areas where it was reluctant to go on smoothly . You can also probably see from these photos, taken earlier on yesterday: ......that I have also started to paint the odd panel or hatch with other metallic colours to give some variation - the photos I have of the actual aircraft seem to show any number of variations with the panels/hatches so I'm using a bit of artistic licence. While these areas were drying I also did some work on some of the other parts: I didn't want to end up having to make all these towards the end of the build. As of yesterday afternoon these are the collection of parts still to be added: This is how I decided it was best to paint the machine gun barrels. I drilled some suitable sized holes in the block of wood before gently pushing them in. They are in deep enough to hold but not so deep that the bare plastic will be seen when they are in place in the wings. They were give a light coat of Revell's Anthracite before I dry brushed them with Revell's silver - they do actually look more metallic in the 'plastic': Before I started the painting I also drilled out the ends to make the holes look like they go all the way through. Also yesterday afternoon I took some more photos - the natural daylight seemed quite nice: Next weekend I'm going to finish getting a few more panels highlighted on the fuselage before I give everything a coat of Pledge (new Klear) and then get the deals on!.......not sure I'm looking forward to that! Comments and suggestions welcome. Kind regards, Stix Edited March 21, 2016 by PlaStix 6
jrlx Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 Superb finish with the metallic paints, Stix! Nearly finished now! Cheers Jaime 1
Biggles87 Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 That could pass for an airbrush finish from here, great job. Cheers John 1
Caerbannog Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 Can you please tell me what you were afraid of? This looks awesome :goodjob: :goodjob: Now I go and swap my airbrush for some Runefang colours ;-) René 2
giemme Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 Amazing! Very convincing NMF! I totally agree with John, that could easily pass for an airbrush job! Ciao 1
sean Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 Excellent NMF Stix, looking really good. I suppose we'll just have to wait until next weekend to see more? Sean 1
Cookenbacher Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 I can't believe you brushed that Stix, you have a gift. Can't wait to see it with decals too. 1
GREG DESTEC Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 NICE! Very, very nice...looking great Stix. I like the tonal difference with the panels, which is difficult to do, and yours look good. Beware of being too symetrical is all i'd suggest. Good reference is recomended for this. I look forward to your next update. 1
Arniec Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 That is a great result with a paintbrush. If you would have said that it was airbrushed I would have believed you as well. For the decals I would go with what Tamiya recommend. If that doesn't work You can Always use the decal softner and setter from Gunze. They work very good on Tamiya and Hasegawa decals. Cheers, 1
wimbledon99 Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 Very nice Stix!! I think you've just made my mind up about adding some more layers 1
Blastvader Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 Wot they said. Nearly there Stix, you're a machine. 1

Hosbabon Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 Metallic finish looks great ! Your invasion stripes really look the part especially round the fuselage, good job not the masking 1

PlaStix Posted March 23, 2016 Author Posted March 23, 2016 Superb finish with the metallic paints, Stix! Nearly finished now! Cheers Jaime Hi Jaime and thank you. "Nearly finished now!"....mmmmmm.....there's still a few decals in the way yet! That could pass for an airbrush finish from here, great job. Cheers John Hi John. Thank you but you are way too kind! Can you please tell me what you were afraid of? This looks awesome :goodjob: :goodjob: Now I go and swap my airbrush for some Runefang colours ;-) René Thank you Rene. I'd never done such a large area of metallic paint before - usually it's on much smaller parts where it can be done pretty much all over in one go. My concern was, knowing how quickly these paints dry, how I was going to get a finish that looked like it matched up! Luckily I discovered that Citadel paints seem to to go on neatly even when I was working up to an area which had been applied and fully dried a week before. If you are having to brush some metallic finish paints then I can recommend Citadel's Runefang! Amazing! Very convincing NMF! I totally agree with John, that could easily pass for an airbrush job! Ciao Thank you Giemme but, like John, you are too kind! Excellent NMF Stix, looking really good. I suppose we'll just have to wait until next weekend to see more? Sean Thank you Sean and yes I can't, unfortunately, work on this until the weekend, although the weekend does arrive a bit earlier because it's Good Friday and I get a day off!! I can't believe you brushed that Stix, you have a gift. Can't wait to see it with decals too. thank you very much. ...................decals............. NICE! Very, very nice...looking great Stix. I like the tonal difference with the panels, which is difficult to do, and yours look good. Beware of being too symetrical is all i'd suggest. Good reference is recomended for this. I look forward to your next update. Thank you very much too Greg. Thank you for the advice about the panels - a very good point - I will try and add some non-symmetrical ones! That is a great result with a paintbrush. If you would have said that it was airbrushed I would have believed you as well. For the decals I would go with what Tamiya recommend. If that doesn't work You can Always use the decal softner and setter from Gunze. They work very good on Tamiya and Hasegawa decals. Cheers, Thank you very much Arnold - like the others - you are way too kind! Thank you for the advice about the decals - I will give that a try. Very nice Stix!! I think you've just made my mind up about adding some more layers Thank you Nigel............and I hope your additional layer(s) works okay. Continued below.......
PlaStix Posted March 23, 2016 Author Posted March 23, 2016 Wot they said. Nearly there Stix, you're a machine. Hi Paul. Thank you. Machine?..........perhaps and old one that keeps needing a good kick occasionally to get it going again! That's a great finish you have stick! I also love your skill of organisation, a place for everything and everything in its place....Now you have gone a got a stunning result with a brush I am going to have to give it a go!Rob Hi Rob and thank you. Good luck with your painting and I look forward to seeing the results! Metallic finish looks great ! Can't add much to what's already been said Stix, outstanding brushwork! Thank you Steve. Well, at this point on a Wednesday I usually say there's still two days in the way until the weekend but this week, because of Good Friday, there is only one!!! Can't wait! Kind regards, Stix
Caerbannog Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 (...) Thank you Steve. Well, at this point on a Wednesday I usually say there's still two days in the way until the weekend but this week, because of Good Friday, there is only one!!! Can't wait! Kind regards, Stix Could not agree more :-) Btw.: I have actually started to brush paint my YP-47M. Now I am scared ;-) René 1
trickyrich Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 WOW Stix, that's about all I can say at the moment!!!! You have easily put us "airbrushers" to shame with that finish, it's beautiful! I think you made the right choice with the colour you used as well, it just looks very natural, which is exactly what you want. The only other thing to say is get a protective clear coat on as soon as you can to protect the beautiful finish!! Well done!!! 1
PlaStix Posted March 24, 2016 Author Posted March 24, 2016 Could not agree more :-) Btw.: I have actually started to brush paint my YP-47M. Now I am scared ;-) René Hi Rene. I hope the brush painting is going well! WOW Stix, that's about all I can say at the moment!!!! Hi Rich and thank you very much for your very kind comments (although I think you are a little too kind - I've seen the beautiful finishes the airbrush users achieve and I cannot compete!) I have to say I am happier with it than I was expecting to be. With regards the choice of colour that is partially down to other Britmodellers, including yourself, who kindly offered advice when I asked for it...what a great bunch!! Thank you all! Hopefully tomorrow I will try and get the remaining work done on the odd panel and I need to get some black stripes on and then I will give it all a coat of Pledge (new Klear) to protect it. Thank you again. Kind regards, Stix 1
PlaStix Posted March 25, 2016 Author Posted March 25, 2016 (edited) I spent several hours on the Thunderbolt this morning but you'd never guess. Most of the time was spent masking off odd panels and colouring them before I got a thin wash of Humbrol's Gunmetal into the panel lines - just to give them a bit more definition. The first set of photos are from this morning to show the results of this: Then this afternoon I got the stripes on the tail and stabilisers - I masked and painted them rather than use the decals: Tomorrow I'm hoping to get some Pledge (new Klear) on. Comments and suggestions welcome. Kind regards, Stix Edited March 25, 2016 by PlaStix 9
