Trumpeter challenger 2 (plus)

Recommended Posts

OK now i was forewarned on this, the fact that the front of the turret may need fixing, and it did. cant find a pic of what it was like before but the plastic did not meet up, there was a big gap at the bottom of the togs box and the shape of the edge was completely off.

those little squiggles are suppose to be metal rings and wire for lifting the panels. ill have to do something with them. and the rather large gap between the back of the gun assy and the turret... just why? :fuyou_2:

currently knocking up some glass for the lovely plastic lumps... sorry, commanders vision ports.

Blimey that turret took some work.....But it looks like you've nailed it.

I figure a good approach is to pick a given component and improve it to the best of your ability, then repeat, repeat, repeat.....Eventually you'll have a model!

Of course it all fits..... with a little help from Mr Plasticard.

if you ever need a boost give it some primer. makes everythink look a bit nicer. Apart from the gap behind the togs box... not sure what to do about that yet until i get a decent pic of the real thing. Anyone have one?

just about got the shape of the front armour lip ok now, with the taper up to the smoke launcher mount and the relieved corner.

so now its onto adding the bits and the detailing, rod and tube instead of moulded on lines.

Front mudguard, too chunky and no clearance for the tracks so its out with the dremel.

mounting lugs? dunno. worth the touble....just about.

the rubber bands arent disasterous but theres very liitle chance of doing a half convincing job of damaging the rubber blocks, so the AM bronco set wins out here.

side armour builds up nicely but i bet it will be a nightmare to mount properly. its solid resin and heavy.

if i have promlems with it dropping off i may have to hollow out the backs later.

24874707016_0acf9600eb_o.jpg

front is almost ready. headlights are hollowed out to take some lenses later. the PE sidelight mounts are included on the PE fret, but they are not shown used in the instructions! silly beggars.

Thanks chaps, to be fair the overall shape of the kit is nice, but there are some almost childish details that let it down. Still, that's wot we are 'ere for innit.

I bought the trumpeter on purpose to have a go with the accurate armour upgrade, I wouldn't do it again, although I must admit I am enjoying it now I've broken its back. I only did this for a bit of practice with something relatively cheap, and so I have something sit it on the bed of my next kit, the accurate armour british oshkosh.

Ready for final primer at last. the grey is decanted Halfords plastic primer and i love it. a bit dusty for gloss finishes without a polish though. The black is just the rubber black i used for the wheels. Anything thats not on it now will be painted separately and added later. As its going on a transporter all hatches are shut, wing mirrors are off and so is the gpmg. I was going to remove the fuel drums, but found some pics of the tank being transported with them on and decided it looks nicer. Also saves scratching empty mounts!

A bit of half-hearted pre shading added, but being heavy handed with the bases coats it will never show later.

Bins are on, you may just be able to see little bits of wire sticking up. These are the replacement pi pulling wires, and will be folded down after painting

Same story on the rear deck.

this is my spray booth, an open patio door. its why i cant paint whenever i like as rain tends to ruin the finish :weep: . Have to watch out for the cat running in and out like a nutter too.

Base coat is on.

the extra armour is a slightly different shade and will not have the black camo extended over it. well thats the plan , I will see how it looks and decide later.

Wheels look quite nice

25075787332_40bdcd9106_o.jpg

now its a matter of gluing all the bits on that have to be there for the camo pattern. The tracks are assembled, but i still need to attack them with a dremel.

better look at the wheels mounted on the tank

24944719080_658b84bc5f_o.jpg

camo is on. i used clever putty to mark it out but didnt like the hard edge so went back over the borders freehand to blend it better. you can see the slightly different green of the addon armour, seems to look ok so ill stick with it.

25122060652_494f29ece2_o.jpg

as a bounus, especially as it will be this way on the transporter, the camo works with the gun pointing backwards too. result! a very thin black was sprayed over the whole thing to break up the slab-like green, visible mainly on the turret top. ill not bother with panel lightening as it will be filtered etc later.

its at that fresh toylike stage which looks false, the weathering will hopefully sort that out at a later date.

first round of weathering. starting to look more like a tank instead of a lump of resin and plastic. maybe a bit too much dust but thats easily removed. not going for a muddy tank just a cleaned up for transport dusty one. once i get a bit nearer what i want ill start sticking the rest of it on.

fuel tanks and some other rear furniture added. the tank mounts havent been painted yet as they needed altering to fit with the resin tanks.

24945632923_31d63f0faf_o.jpg

decided to have a go at some camo nets. never done one before so any tips welcomed. I have a spare turret so im forming them on that and if they come out ok ill transfer them to the real one and then do the barrel as well.

netting soaked in thinned pva and draped on the turret to dry

24945632883_abd67aa5fd_o.jpg

painted up with a slightly darker green than is on the tank.

25479603581_94c4beef2d_o.jpg

brushed with more dilute pva and some crushed tarragon stuck on. i may add a bit more, or something different to it yet. ill spray it up and see how it looks.

25453746862_e4b7576236_o.jpg

this is the pic i am using as a rough guide. its never going to be identical but roughly alike.

Looks good. Do you know where the photo was taken?

i cropped the picture, the tank has KFOR on it so i assume it was taken in Kosovo

had a bit of a paint up with some dilute muted colours. seems to look ok so i am going with it. they are only draped over at the moment, not attached, ill do the gun at the end
