AFV Club IDF SHOT Centurion Mk5/1 1967

with a 105mm Gun (BUT! Guess Who? fitted the 20pdr instead) :banghead:

READ THE INSTRUCTIONS PROPERLY NEXT TIME - DUMMY!

(Kit AF35159)

The 'SPECIAL' parts comprise turned metal 20pdr & 105mm gun barrels

ADDITIONAL ELEMENTS: AFV Club sets Mantlet cover 'A' AC35008 & Indy Track AF35102

I've had a load of the AFV Club Centurions for quite a while now and have wanted an excuse to get started.

The Leicester Modellers Boxing Day Build Club this year has given me the opportunity to get this 2006 release started - a bit late!

5901026_orig.jpg

My choice of build for this time will be to use the upgraded 105mm gun barrel.

I do have another of these and the 20pdr version will come later.

The Horstmann suspension has an A & B set so watch how you fit them

Also made a start on the lower hull which is extremely well molded and a great fit to the parts.

Whilst not exactly on the rare list, with the advent of a host of new products being released, IDF Armour is starting to become more popular.

The latest couple of hours work today

7217138_orig.jpg

A unit (centre bogie) & B unit (front and rear bogies)

34406_orig.jpg

Very good casting detail on the drive sprocket transmission housing

1361478_orig.jpg

The upper rear plate (C42) is not a perfect fit and there are no locating pins or marks

7602802_orig.jpg

3 turns of a small laggy band provides enough tension to ensure a correct fit

** Engine deck and upper hull next **

Can't sleep at the moment so......

Fitting of the Deck and hull plates starting from Rear to Front.

You should take care securing each part in turn for a precise, snug fit.

At this point, I decided to allow the glue on the Hull construction to solidify properly and move on to another assembly: The Turret.

184337_orig.jpg

Turret assembly follows 3 distinct sections: The Body including the Mantel, The Gun and The Mantel Cover

At only 8 pieces for the turret body construction some fettling was needed.

I removed all the locating pins from the turret sides and ensured a close fit.

7846854_orig.jpg

I applied part AC35008, Mantlet Cover type 'A' which is of a flexible plastic.

The elastic bands are to ensure the sides, bottom, top and cover are secure and do not move during the curing overnight.

The Mantel cover was secured with SuperGlue.

NEXT: Hull and Turret fittings

Watching this with interest also.

Having been inspired by Stix's build, I decided that I would like to build a tank again ( it's been about 25 years since the last one ) and I've always liked the look of the Centurion. I also have AF35159, the version with just one gun barrel, can you confirm that this is the 105mm version?

Regards

John

AND YES! I fitted the 20pdr and not the 105mm as originally planned!!!

Oh sugar, have you actually glued it in? How would you tell them apart except from the muzzle size? What I need is a micrometer.

The shape of the barrel itself and the design of the fume extractor situated half-way down the barrel.

A bit more done tonight

6933264_orig.jpg

Elastic bands removed and with the stowage bins attached - still a way to go yet though.

Plenty of small parts still to be added yet!

9862133_orig.jpg

Track Guards and stowage bins completed and tacked to the hull.

They are a very good fit with only a small amount of cleanup required.

It's actually looking more like a Centurion Tank now!

NEXT TIME: All the fiddly bits

And so far tonight we have......

9706541_orig.jpg

Front brackets, lights and a slight bin location placement (Mk5 & Mk5/1)

Yes, the stowage bin on the Mk5/1 is mounted higher up the hull front (and on an additional armour plate) than on the Mk5

8927860_orig.jpg

Exhaust system ready but not glued, they need painting with a burnt rust finish a bit later.

However, the Track Guards are now secured.

9734778_orig.jpg

The Rear Mudguards, Lifting Brackets, Infantry Telephone and Hauser mounting are attached

9384_orig.jpg

Forward turret fittings applied with the Radio Pot and Smoke Dischargers

Next time: Remaining Turret fittings, Tools and accessories

AND, What did you do New Years Evening ???

It's now 10:30pm on New Years Eve and I'm working on the turret.

This transparency plastic is quite rubbery in feel but works well.

Commanders Cupola and turret fittings installed - nearly there now!

8097635_orig.jpg

Lots of ejector pin marks to fill on the hatches and track unfortunately.

All cleaned up and its HAPPY NEW YEAR to you all for 2016 - I know Sad!!!

1671672_orig.jpg

A test of all the built main body parts parts and ....... everything fits!

However, it'll look a lot better once I start throwing some paint around.

2641539_orig.jpg

:clap2: HAPPY :clap2: NEW :clap2: YEAR :clap2: EVERYONE :clap2:

Next time: The smallest fittings & the Commanders MG Mount :wall:

Sorry Guys, had to break off this one to build the Made in Britain GB entry, now completed.

Can't quite get to painting as yet as access to spray booth is restricted.

**PAINTING**

Summary so far:

Stiff plastic if not slightly brittle

A good fit and crisply moulded

Too many visible ejector pin marks

Recommended

Timeline: 15th February 2016
It's been a few days as other projects are running in tandem with this one and with the delay in getting to the spray booth and paints I apologise for the delay.

Airbrushes thoroughly cleaned, serviced and ready to go.

A very straight forward undercoat of Vallejo Model Air Matt Black but this time I added about 10% Thinner by volume

3176581_orig.jpg

Next day, I sprayed Vallejo Model Air Sand again thinned by about 20% to give a fine coating inpreparation for the IDF Sand later

8418210_orig.jpg

I'm planning on using the AMMO IDF Set and their early Sand/Grey for the 1967 conflict

Next Time: More paint
