Shermaniac
AFV Club IDF SHOT Centurion Mk5/1 1967 with a 105mm Gun (BUT! Guess Who? fitted the 20pdr instead) READ THE INSTRUCTIONS PROPERLY NEXT TIME - DUMMY! (Kit AF35159) The 'SPECIAL' parts comprise turned metal 20pdr & 105mm gun barrels ADDITIONAL ELEMENTS: AFV Club sets Mantlet cover 'A' AC35008 & Indy Track AF35102 I've had a load of the AFV Club Centurions for quite a while now and have wanted an excuse to get started. The Leicester Modellers Boxing Day Build Club this year has given me the opportunity to get this 2006 release started - a bit late! My choice of build for this time will be to use the upgraded 105mm gun barrel. I do have another of these and the 20pdr version will come later. The Horstmann suspension has an A & B set so watch how you fit them Also made a start on the lower hull which is extremely well molded and a great fit to the parts. Whilst not exactly on the rare list, with the advent of a host of new products being released, IDF Armour is starting to become more popular. Shermaniac
The latest couple of hours work today A unit (centre bogie) & B unit (front and rear bogies) Very good casting detail on the drive sprocket transmission housing The upper rear plate (C42) is not a perfect fit and there are no locating pins or marks 3 turns of a small laggy band provides enough tension to ensure a correct fit ** Engine deck and upper hull next **

Shermaniac
Can't sleep at the moment so...... Fitting of the Deck and hull plates starting from Rear to Front. You should take care securing each part in turn for a precise, snug fit. At this point, I decided to allow the glue on the Hull construction to solidify properly and move on to another assembly: The Turret. Turret assembly follows 3 distinct sections: The Body including the Mantel, The Gun and The Mantel Cover At only 8 pieces for the turret body construction some fettling was needed. I removed all the locating pins from the turret sides and ensured a close fit. I applied part AC35008, Mantlet Cover type 'A' which is of a flexible plastic. The elastic bands are to ensure the sides, bottom, top and cover are secure and do not move during the curing overnight. The Mantel cover was secured with SuperGlue. Biggles87
Watching this with interest also. Having been inspired by Stix's build, I decided that I would like to build a tank again ( it's been about 25 years since the last one ) and I've always liked the look of the Centurion. I also have AF35159, the version with just one gun barrel, can you confirm that this is the 105mm version? Regards John

Biggles87
Oh sugar, have you actually glued it in? How would you tell them apart except from the muzzle size? What I need is a micrometer.

Shermaniac
A bit more done tonight Elastic bands removed and with the stowage bins attached - still a way to go yet though. Plenty of small parts still to be added yet! Track Guards and stowage bins completed and tacked to the hull. They are a very good fit with only a small amount of cleanup required. It's actually looking more like a Centurion Tank now! NEXT TIME: All the fiddly bits
Shermaniac
And so far tonight we have...... Front brackets, lights and a slight bin location placement (Mk5 & Mk5/1) Yes, the stowage bin on the Mk5/1 is mounted higher up the hull front (and on an additional armour plate) than on the Mk5 Exhaust system ready but not glued, they need painting with a burnt rust finish a bit later. However, the Track Guards are now secured. The Rear Mudguards, Lifting Brackets, Infantry Telephone and Hauser mounting are attached Forward turret fittings applied with the Radio Pot and Smoke Dischargers Next time: Remaining Turret fittings, Tools and accessories Edited December 29, 2015 by Shermaniac
Shermaniac
Before any one comments. The exhausts should be horizontal not vertical. The instructions indicate a vertical setting, it's wrong and has now been corrected.

A test of all the built main body parts parts and ....... everything fits! However, it'll look a lot better once I start throwing some paint around. SaintsPhil
Sand looks nice over the black base! Have you used the ammo paints before? I just can't get on with them personally...
