kwaterous
Anyone here who participated in the anything but injection moulded GB earlier int he year might remember my build there. The IA-58 where th pain crazed on the wing when I started applying the camouflage. Anyway, to see if I could get one more build finished befor the new year, I decided to kick-start one of my (many) stalled builds. I picked this one because I thought it would be a piece of cake. (you don't really believe that crap do you) Actually, because I just wanted to see if I could finish it, being my first vac and all. Here's the old thread, there a lot of it so I won't re-post it. If you're interested, have a look. http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234980973-rare-plane-ia-58/#entry1971417 This build has had a lot of scratch work thrown at it, so it'll be nice to get it finished (hopefully) These are the last photos befor the restart, and they don't include the issue that cause the stalling, the crazing paint. Anyway, wish me luck, I've already started to scrape the old paint I'll the wing, I'm trying to save the light brown though as I've since run out of the colour. kwaterous
If Mr. Newton is around, I'd like to smack him for inventing gravity. I now have 2 1/2 planes, instead of one after an unsuccessful test flight. Many choice curse words were used I figure that I now have nothing to lose by trying to fix this mess, so we'll see what happens. Step 1: a lot of white glue This is holding the plane together as the seams along the wing roots have split, but not the one at the back of the wing. I've also smeared glue into the cracks fro the outside as an attempt at Gap filling. The cracks are visible, but not hugely and should be able to be covered with a bit of paint touch up. I may have to get creative with the colour scheme though. At least the camo looks nice this time around. Not so much cheers, K Edited December 27, 2015 by kwaterous
kwaterous
Well, it's back in 1 piece (mostly) Started out by re-sticking the weights that had come loose in the nose. Used white glue again. Also had to re-glue part of the cockpit tub as it had snapped loose too. And once that glue had set, I used some handy-dandy superglue, and it's a plane again (yay) Seams in the side aren't too too bad, but the one underneath is going to take some work to fix up. I'm going to let the glue set overnight, then get into the filling business tomorrow, maybe even patch the paint a bit? Anyway, I'm feeling a bit more optimistic now. kwaterous
More progress I wasn't able to match the underside colour properly, so I just masked off the panels with the cracks in them, then painted them in the different shade. It's not ideal, but it works. Also finished the paint touch up on the topside. Cracks are still visible, but only if you got looking for them. And then, it just seemed to go really fast through the gloss coat stage and we have decals on. I also painted the silver bits of the engines and got the props finished up. It's starting to look like I might actually make my finished before New Years goal. Cheers, K Edited December 29, 2015 by kwaterous

kwaterous
27 minutes to midnight, on the 31st of December, and it's finished. Canopy was glued in with tinted white glue Looks messy here but I cleaned it up afterwards Also made up the landing gear/tire assemblies And extended the propellor shafts Glue the landing gear, and doors in place Main gear was a pain in the neck to do Next up was a few bits on the back end Neat trick for the rigging, I used stretched sprue, then once the superglue is set, I heated a no.11 blade and held it just under the aerial, it straightened them out in a hurry. Got it up on its gear and with the props glued in Was a relief that I wasn't dealing with a tail-sitter And here it is "done" Glue is still setting, and the last clear coat isnt quite dry, but for all intents and purposes, it's finished. BritJet
Well done for finally finishing it, you were so close during the non-injection moulded group build. I suppose the big question has to be, after beating this one would you build another vacform? Steve
kwaterous
I'm glad to have finished it, still have to do the gallery photos though Yes, I'd do another vacform, but I think it'd have to be a subject I'm really interested in, otherwise the mojo might get a little fried. The only other vac I've got, the rare-plane tucano, will have to wait a bit before it gets tackled. K
