Tornado GR1 painting advice

Hi all

Just starting a 1/32 GR1 Tornado going to be using the 617sqn markings. I have been looking at some topics regarding the paint for RAF grey green scheme and it seems quite strange that no one really seems happy with any option off the shelf or am I wrong? I would appreciate some advice and any other suggestions would be very welcome.

What manufacturer and what colours would you recommend for the grey green shceme?

I have been used to enamels in the past never used acrylics, there are pros and cons for both but could we have a discussion as to what these are and what recommendations of manufacturer you would make.

Can I use enamels for brushing and acrylics for spraying? Or would you recommend not mixing the different products?

I want to use acrylic for the main grey and green effect and I want to use an airbrush for this. I want to use a wash to accentuate the panels what would you recommend? I also want to use a primer I have read the Halfords grey is a good choice? Following the undercoat and then the acrylic base colours what gloss varnish would be best to use before the panel wash?

Following the panel wash do you then use a matt or silk final clear coat over the decals?

Is there anywhere on the forums that has a good step by step process?

Sorry I know I am asking for a lot but this is the one area where things really have changed massively.

Any help gratefully received.

Xtracolor would seem to be a good match. The paints are gloss, so you can decal directly over them without need for an additional glosscoat.

You can use acrylics over enamel and vice versa- provided that you let the first layer cure thorougly.

I always weather after decalling - otherwise you get pristine markings on a weathered surface.

HTH!,

Mr Hobby Color / Gunze do nice acrylic paints with specific colours for the dark sea grey (H331) and dark green (H330). Spray on really well, easy to get a nice smooth finish and dry quickly. There not true acrylics but a sort of lacquer type of a acrylic and should be thinned with their own self levelling thinners.

Another vote for Mr Hobby/Gunze acrylics. I use Tamiya thinners (easier to get) with mine and have always had good results.

Sorry for the thread hijack, but I didn't want to start a new thread for such a similar question.

I would prefer to use Tamia acrylic for my wrap around Tonka, and at the moment I'm looking at xf-24 and XF-81. Is that the right / best combo or should it be xf-82 instead of xf-24?

Edit: I see Tamia do something they call Dark Sea Grey xf-54, but the paint conversion chart I'm looking at says that xf-24 is closest / equivalent to humbrol 164.

Taaking a different tack. as the Xtracrilix 1004 seems to be a popular choice, I could go with the the closest / equivalent to that, which the conversion chart says is xf-53

:banghead: help

Thanks

Chris

I'd say try XF-54 for the Dark Sea Grey, rather than XF-24 (near EDSG) or XF-82(Ocean Grey) if you're using Tamiya paint.
