RAF Stencils - what colour?

I came across this while trying to create some decals http://www.e-paint.co.uk/BS381%20Colourchart.asp

If you click on a colour you get RGB / CMYK etc. values so very useful.

Which is the correct yellow for RAF stencils - specifically on a Harrier GR3?

TIA,

Ross

This may help - applicable to all RAF aircraft at the time although there were variations authorised at Command level.

You should note that all Hawker built aircraft from at least the early Hunters had the vast majority of the maintenance instructions applied by pre-printed decals. When these were required to be renew and no replacements available, stencils could be made up in strict accordance with measurements and design as published in the various AP's. This was so that all RAF aircraft confirmed to the various STANAG's and Defence Standards in accordance with international agreements and in particular that all NATO aircraft conformed in order to eliminate possible errors in international cross-servicing. Even Soviet Union aircraft had them applied although they did make up a few of their own and the colours were generally ignored by the Soviets.

Edit :- If you can let me know which stencil I can give you the FS dimensions

That AP is very interesting Dennis. Regarding national markings, as applied to Harriers GR1-GR3, would the BS381C colours be 536 for the red (as above) or 537 - Signal Red - would the RAF have two similar shades of red in use? And then for the blue - 110 Roundel Blue (or maybe 105 Oxford for a more toned down look?)

Fascinating subject and what great colour chart - now saved to my 'favourites'!

Thank you

Simon

Thanks for the info Dennis. Looking around the web it seems the font name is Univers - without the final 'e'. It can be found for free but you have to dodge popups and misleading 'Download' buttons. I have downloaded and installed to Photoshop successfully and without a complaint from my antivirus. If anyone would like it I can send them the file in response to a PM.

No problem rossm. What scale are you printing the decals for and which particular external stencilling are you after ?

Hi Simon,

Colours for the roundels were Red - BS 381C/538 (Post Office Red) and for the Blue - BS 381C/110 (Roundel Blue).

  • 2 weeks later...

Are you talking walk ways or tail letters?

The 1 inch line surrounding the mainplane top fairing together with the four "X"'s within, were painted Post Office Red B.S. 381C 528. By "Tail letters" I am assuming that you mean code letters. These varied in colour between Units and also within time frames.
