Looking really good Paul, great to see one of these being built, I must admit to having a soft spot for the old Monogram kits. I have their F-100, F-106 and the F-101B in Canadian markings packed away somewhere, I think they scrub up really well with a bit of care. Talking of noise I remember seeing a 10th TRS RF-101C from Upper Heyford and a Lakenheath based F-100D blasting off into the sunset at the end of an airshow at Gaydon in 1969 with the characteristic loud bangs as the afterburners kicked in along with clouds of wonderful smelling but environmentally unhealthy JP-4 smoke, those were the days.....

Hello,General! Many thanks for your very kind reply and I'm pleased you like her.My admiration of Monogram kits has grown very much as a result of tackling this subject.Seeing the 'Voodoos' as you did will certainly be a memorable experience and one to relish.Aah!! That beautiful perfume of spent JP4!! Can we bottle it as aftershave?! As you rightly say, those were the days.....long live the legend!! ;) All the very best,Paul. Edited by mcdonnell

Hello,Friends - This week has seen further progress. All decalling is now complete. All detail painting is now complete including the formation lights at the wing tips. For these,I tinted Humbrol White with a tiny amount of Humbrol 81 to obtain the colour match of the fuselage kit decals. They were brush painted freehand and I'm content with the result. The forward fuselage 'whisker' pitots are now in place and detail work on the transparencies is under way.The whole airframe has received its final coat of 'Klear' in readiness for the finishing varnish coat. All the very best,Paul.

Hi Paul

Not long now I guess until she moves on to RfI! I'm liking the FOD guards with the lone star on them, very smart. The canopies look good too, hell, it all does! :coolio:

Hello,John - Thank you very much as always.I stumbled across a photo of a jet from this unit with the Lone Star emblems on the covers and seeing that they were an option in the decal sheet I thought I'd make the most of them.Again, they're all sealed under the good old Klear. All the very best,Paul.

Hello,Jan and Guy - Many thanks to you both, gentlemen.I hope I can get her safely through the final phases of the build. No pressure there then!? :D The wingtip formation lights and intake covers just help to 'complete the picture' a little bit. ;) All the very best,Paul.

Great looking jet and very neat decalling. Well done for reminding us that old is beautiful too!

Al

Hello,Alan - Many thanks for your kind and much appreciated reply. She may not be 'state of the art' but I hope she'll look the part when completed.I'm now planning on how to deal with the final aspects.Regarding the decalling, all credit must go to 'Caracal Decals'.There were some complex and pronounced details to overcome without a 'sagging' appearance.Repeated bullying with Microsol eventually got the result I was hoping for.To be honest, had it not been for the quality and strength of the decals,I would have had a much tougher challenge on my hands. They're all happy and sealed under a coat of 'Klear' now, thank goodness! :D All the very best,Paul. Hi Paul,

The bird looks superb with all the decals on. I'm sure it's an impressive sight in real life! Are you planning to weather it in any way?

Cheers

Hello,Jaime - Thank you very much indeed,as always. She is quite a size, particularly in length. All being well,When she's completed,I'll post a measure comparison against the Phantom and Strike Eagle.Whether to weather? That's a good question and to be honest I hadn't considered that. She's 'high gloss' at the moment but the finishing varnish will mellow that.I've never weathered a model thus far. It's purely a personal taste and choice issue, but I love the 'old school' clean finish.I know that may sound defeatist but I would add exhaust staining, for example,on a WW2 subject. All my builds receive a light wash to the undercarriage as well.

I know models like this will rarely win a competition and I more than respect the weathered works of art we see all the time on the Forum but I'm content with how mine are.;) All the very best,Paul.

WEATHER IT???? Sacrilege! Heresy! Those airplanes were kept squeaky clean at all times. To weather it would be to desecrate the memory of William B. Travis, Jim Bowie, Davy Crockett, the other Alamo defenders, and the very Alamo itself! Horrors!

Hello,Space Ranger - Great to hear from you too! Well, the last thing I wish to do is cause anarchy in the Alamo!!? :D I'll put the dustpan and brush away then!! ;) All the very.best,Paul.

Sorry, just my pet peeve. Make sure you blend in that front windscreen. Too many builds leave a step or gap there and it ruins the lines of her.

Hello,Robin42 - Many thanks for your kind reply.I understand and appreciate your good advice.Rest assured,I'll be trying my best in all the final stages. The temptation at this stage in a build can be to rush things.I'm disciplining myself to not do that. The Windshield and Canopy require careful detail work, including the seal strips. These I am making from Xtradecal 'Yellow Stripe'.Thank you for your input. All the very best,Paul.

It's a beautiful build, thanks for sharing!

Hello,Caracal Models - Thank you so much for your very kind reply and interest.I'm pleased you like her.I,in return, must pay your goodselves a well-deserved compliment on the quality and detail of your decal products.I sang their praises in an earlier reply and it's a great pleasure to do so directly to you.I found them absolutely faultless to work with and they withstood a lot of treatment to conform to the complex and raised detail on this airframe.Conform they certainly have and I'm delighted with them.

I cannot recommend your decal products highly enough and you can rest assured of my future patronage.;) All the very best,Paul.

I have some cheater canopy strips for my 1/72 version. May actually build it one day! They are avalable in 1/48 if you get frustrated. http://www.canuckmodels.com/product/cf101/cf101_canopy.htm

Hello,Robin42 - Thank you ever so much for your message and kindly passing on the. Information regarding the canopy strips.Since the last photo update,I've got the windshield strips done. The 'Xtradecal' Yellow Stripe has done the job okay. There are some curved sections which I blended in with Revell Enamel 'SM310',using a very fine brush. The main canopy is next and fortunately the striping is less complex and more straightforward.

I hope you do get your 1/72 version built and good luck with it.Thank you once again for your interest and advice.;) All the very best,Paul.

Hello,Friends - Last weekend saw some decent progress on 'Voodoo'.She is now finished in her 'Xtracolor 'Enamel Satin Varnish. The Main Canopy and Windshield have also received the 'sealing stripes'.My last reply,to Robin42,explains the method I used. The stripes have been sealed over with a coat of 'Klear' using a fine brush. The centre section of the Windshield has been tinted with a thinned drop of 'Tamiya Clear Blue'.I'm content enough with the way these items look now.She is now awaiting final assembly. All the very best,Paul.
