Hello,Oliver,Jaime and Guy - Once again, gentlemen, thank you so much for your positive feedback and kind replies.I hope the idea for the intake covers works for your good selves.Apart from them being a little extra detail and a splash of colour they can be an easy way of solving the occasional fit issue of intake internals. They're also a great way of personalising your models.

You are all fine modellers and if 'Voodoo' is good enough for you then I'm more than happy with her.;) All the very best,Paul.

I must say that I often have a smile at posts on modelling forums that view old Monogram kits through 'rose tinted' glasses, particularly if the new kit originates from the 'Axis of Innaccuracy' or is viewed from the armchair as unbuildable for whatever reason. That said, I do believe the F-101 Voodoo, along with several other Monogram kits, is an exception and will take some beating, notwithstanding its 25+ year vintage, raised panel lines (shock, horror) etc. Many are, of course, still waiting with bated breath for the arrival of the F-101B Voodoo from Kittyhawk but if their F-101C is anything to go by, it may be best to stick with the dependable Monogram kit and simply apply some modelling skills along the way.

This thread is a fine example of how one can produce a great looking model from a so-called 'last generation' kit and hats off to Paul (mcdonnell) for doing so. I have an old Monogram kit, complete with Black Box 'pit, Quickboost strakes and aftermarket decals patiently waiting its turn in the build pile and this build has certainly renewed my faith in the decision not to succumb on this occasion to a new generation kit as a replacement.

Well done, Sir !

Hello,Tiger331 - Thank you so much for your very kind reply and comments. It's much appreciated indeed.I must admit that when I discovered the battered,age-worn box containing this kit I was at a crossroad somewhat. The level and quality of surface detail, albeit raised, said yes straightaway to me.So,to finally make my mind up,I decided on a 'dry fit' of the main airframe parts, the result of which made me decide to proceed with building her.As far as fit is concerned,as with most kits, some areas can be trickier than others. The correct positioning of the main undercarriage springs to mind most of all. However, the nose section, for example,I found absolutely superb. The radome is a split item, the parts joining a treat. The real quality showed itself when the radome was mated to the forward fuselage. It fitted absolutely perfectly. No filling, shaping or sanding whatsoever. How many 'modern' kits can we say that about?

All I can add,Tiger,is please give this kit a go your Goodself. It's a personal choice but I can easily live with the raised detail of this kit because it's so good.

I hope to be able to complete the build successfully and that my model will do the kit proud. ;) All the very best,Paul.

Great looking as your close to finishing. I'll add my agreement that those old Monogram kits are still a great value. The clear parts and things like wheelwell detail are the same quality of more contemporary releases.

Only just came across this thread. That Voodoo is coming along nicely - it already really screams 'speed'. I've a great love for the B version since I saw a CF-101B perform - I believe at Comox - when I visited my Canadian family when I was a boy. I think it was loud, not sure if I remember that correctly :D .

It wasn't loud. It was beyond loud. I had the privilege of these flying over my head growing up. It had "hard light" afterburner. No zones. Dump fuel in and bang. The engines would almost never light off at the same time, so it was BA-BANG.

Hello, Jan,Baldwin8 and Jay - Many thanks to you, gentlemen, for your kind replies. They're much appreciated indeed. To have seen this type flying must have been a noisy experience,Jay.A memorable one as well!! :) I've yet to see the type in real life and look forward to doing so,

Since I posted the latest update,I've commenced work on the Canopy and Windshield.I totally agree with your thoughts on the clear parts,Baldwin8.These parts were among those that impressed me the most.Absolutely crystal clear.I have given them the customary treatment of a dip in Klear but this was because it's my customary practice to do so and certainly not for necessity.

Thank you,Jan, and I'm pleased she meets with your liking.

I just hope I can safely and satisfactorily complete this build. ;) All the very best,Paul.

So if one Voodoo is good, 12 at once must be so much better:

Note the proper application of Maple leaves. One of those things is not like the others. Look closely to see the Boss' ride.

Hello,Jessica - Good to hear from you and many thanks for the Voodoo footage. It's very kind of you.I know and understand why the Canadian Scheme is your favourite. It is very elegant indeed.Do not worry, because my Starfighter will be in the 'Cold Lake' Canadian Scheme.I built this type in that scheme in 1/72 scale a long time ago and will be doing her in 1/48 this time.Polished Metal Fuselage,Red Tailplane,White Wings adorned with those beautiful markings.Hope you'll approve. ;) All the vey best,Paul. Very nice, I love the scheme and am genuinely surprised how big the Voodoo is.

Hello,At Sea - Many thanks for your your very kind reply and for your approval.I share your surprise on the size of this type. She certainly beats the Phantom and Strike Eagle in length. The Caracal Decal options are all tempting but I chose this one because of its originality to the kit decals.;) All the very best,Paul.

Hello,Bryn - Thank you very much for your very kind reply. The method for the intake covers is a breeze. It must be if I can do it! ;) First of all,cut a piece of masking tape and fit over the intake.Draw around the edge of the intake with a pencil. This gives you a template.Place this on a piece of thin plasticard and then cut around the pencil line. This will give you a good shape which may just need a little sand to get the fit you want. Then, you can either remove the tape,or as I do,leave in place and paint accordingly.I use decorator's masking tape for this as it has a pleasing very slight texture which looks good when painted. To fit in place,I seat the intake and then tack it in place with a spot of superglue.I then seal around the edge with PVA If need be and touch in with the intake colour.I love doing these items and have fitted them to my Phantom and Hunter builds. It's just a little extra detail and cheap to make.Give it a try and good luck. ;) All the very best,Paul.

For extra realism, add a handle from a staple or stretched sprue or plastic rod, glued perpendicular to the cover itself. Or two handles, one on either end, oriented vertically. These will also allow your 1/48 ground crew to remove them before flight.

Great job on the Voodoo. That's my favorite F-101 markings scheme, as my address probably explains!

Hello,SpaceRanger - Great to have you on radar from across the miles! Thank you so much for your very kind reply and additional detail suggestions.Much appreciated.I'm pleased you approve of the scheme.I love the ANG theme of well-presented aircraft in glorious colourful schemes and look forward to further builds with this theme in mind.;) All the very best from Yorkshire to Texas! :) Paul.

Looking really good Paul, great to see one of these being built, I must admit to having a soft spot for the old Monogram kits. I have their F-100, F-106 and the F-101B in Canadian markings packed away somewhere, I think they scrub up really well with a bit of care. Talking of noise I remember seeing a 10th TRS RF-101C from Upper Heyford and a Lakenheath based F-100D blasting off into the sunset at the end of an airshow at Gaydon in 1969 with the characteristic loud bangs as the afterburners kicked in along with clouds of wonderful smelling but environmentally unhealthy JP-4 smoke, those were the days.....
