rob85
So with christmas and sale to sort I have had a little break from these.... until my sister said she was on her way up Monday! I spent and evening getting xix sorted and finished off. Few pic's below and sorry no progress shots... RFI with a few other pictures to follow. Annoyingly I didn't manage to sort the walk way, and when using Hu 230 for touch ups it came out lighter than the first coats... before going to bed on Sunday I gave it a matt cote then another satin coat which appears to have blended it better than what you see above! No photos as the model is now sat above a cot in London! I have not weathered this as i wanted it a clean as possible. ....the other tw will make up for this Cheers chap's Rob

rob85
About time I put some real progress one here! I have had a crack at decals for the mkia's, wings firsts, and with that starting on walkway lines..... they did not turn out the bust Roundels were fine, walkways silvered like buggers and broke up completely so could not be finished....I then thought why did I even take this route? I have tape and the ability to mask lines, cookie has shown us it is do-able, so why not give it a crack That line I am happy with.... the paint that lifted I am not....I hope to cover it with chipping and the original paint colours, wish we luck The rest went ok, but a bit more lifting on the above wing.... Just kept repeating the same process for the above, then did this to the other spitfire before transfers I also did the roundels for the undersides of the night/white mkia And that is where we are at! Hope to get the rest of the transfers on this weekend.... so much getting them ticked off before the new year. Happy new year all Rob
Biggles87
Aargh! The dreaded paint lift off. I will try the walkway transfers on mine, but if they are as bad as yours it looks like I'll have to mask and paint them after all. If I do have to I'll make sure that there is plenty of varnish on the area first and use low tack Frisk film. The wing roundels have settled well, at least that's something that worked. Happy New Year to you and yours John
PlaStix
Good to see more progress on these and, despite the paint lifting issues, they are looking good! Very nice. Kind regards and a Happy New Year. Stix
CedB
Good job with the walkways Rob - shame about the paint lifting but I'm sure you'll sort it. Happy New Year!
giemme
Walkways and roundels look good As for the paint lift, I always put on a couple of Future coats before doing any tape masking; prior to sticking the tape on, I first put it on a glass plate I have (also to cut it to size), so that it looses some tackiness. That normally works fine for me; however, I learnt the hard way that decals should go on only after all the masking has been done and removed. Happy New Year! rob85
Cheers all! I have to say I am happy enough with where these are at, now all the walkways are ticked off I can crack on with the transfers! Giemme, you are of course correct, I have put a couple of coats of satin varnish on these and let it to really harden so I hope not to have any more issues with paint lift....hopefully... Another in the notes for the next build, prime and to varnish Rob
rob85
Also proud dad moment, my daughter drew me a plane this morning in a card to wish me happy new year, very sweet, she informed me it was "a cat from hell and American, which I like because it has stars on!" Bless her she had drawn my eduard hellcat... Impressive bit was, it was from memory (I cut the box art out for her and the boy as they like to keep them by their bed) and she had got the roundles right even down to the ring round the star... Nice! She then told me she wants to make planes like me... Finally I have broken one... Just the boy to sort now! She has convinced me that a MKix spitfire in pink would be great.... Good job I know just the one! Rob
rob85
So had another little session on the two remaining two, GRU and QJW both mkia's. I focused on QJW as GRU was a bit frustrating last time... Fully coated in varnish and left to dry for a whole year.... walk ways all masked and painted ready to go. I used the same method as the other two for the transfers, boiling hot water and cotton wool to apply pressure and get the transfer to draw into the panel lines So that's all the main transfers complete, I will add a few more of the little ones but not the whole lot, I don't think my eyes could take it! The pair together below I have also fixed the the paint issues on the wing which have blended well but I did this after the above so here is a pic below Just needs a polish and a varnish and we can crack in with the transfers So that's the next steps, finish transfers on GRU nd then the weathering stage! Very excited about that bit. Also here is what my 5 year old thinks a hellcat looks like...rather spitfire-ish which is what she us used to, but a great effort Rob
CedB
GREAT result on the repairs and transfers Rob, and congrats to your daughter on the Hellcat - pleased to see she's crewed it AND remembered to fit the gunsight before the canopy

rob85
Cheers all. I am happy with how the transfers have gone, tiny bits of silvering but that is pretty much fixed now it's had another coat of varnish. Just hope the other one goes as wel!! Hopefully we will find out tonight.....after I have been to see Peter Pan with the kids that is! Rob
giemme
Both looking great Rob, and what a lovely greetings card from your daughter That boiling water technique seems to be working pretty well! Must try it out myself. Ciao

rob85
Hi all, I have finished the transfers apart from the gun ports now....I was say I had no end of trouble with GRU transfers, roundels breaking, letter codes ripping, serial number folding over (didn't manage to get that sorted and the 0 is still folded in half! ). I ended up taking the roundels from the airfix hurricane kit as they are the nearest I have, however the red dot in the centre is too big which is frustrating.... I have to say GRU has not been an easy ride in comparison to QJW, but they are in a good enough place! Pic's below (Side I had the issues with...best I could do! I very much could have been worse! As Ced would say, lots of Anglo saxon used) And a family photo! So that's it so far, not much to be done now, just the weathering and little bits! Need to think how I will do that this time. rob85
Cheers chaps, they have settled down well, but I know the left had side is wonky on GRU... Irritating but I can live with it! Very much looking forward to getting these weathered Rob
