Tim Moff
I also have this Revel 1/48 F5F for this STGB (I try to build a 1/72 and 1/48 double). It is an old kit with raised panels, not near the AFV standard that I built before, but hey its in the stash!! I plan to build using either the kit or Authentic decals set in my stash, that happen to be the same airframe. Here are the standard shots: Aftermarket Decals in the stash I am however sorely tempted by these - to build the tigered striped Bort number 30........be a challenge, buy hey, why not!! Gonna need a couple of 1/48 pilots too (there must be loads somewhere as not many build with the crew in!!) Tempted..... modelling minion
Nice selection of decals to choose from there Tim. Surprising difference in the red colour between the kit and Authentic decals, not sure which is closest to the real thing. Good luck with the kit, the old Monogram one tends to fight back a bit but I am sure you will beat it into submission. Craig.
Tim Moff
Thanks Craig, Completed an old Monogram F100D in Lakenheath colours recently - surprisingly quite good given its age-did fight back a bit!
Skids
There are some tempting schemes there but the Tigered Bort 30 looks extremely nice.
Giorgio N
It's always hard to choose a scheme whenever the aggressor units are involved... Personally I always think that the VFC-111 markings look great, however they are on the wrong aircraft, should be on a Tomcat !
Tim Moff
Decals on order - now do I paint the lighter colour then mask like a madman (need to get shares in Tamiya) or paint dark and mask like a madman? Howabout Maskol (other brands are available!)? Anyone tried this before? Appreciate any top tips!!
trickyrich
welcome aboard...and OH WOW! I really like your choice even if the painting is going to be a bit of a challenge! I'd be tempted to try the liquid mask option first, it may be the easiest. But test it out first, you'll need to keep the masking fluid nice and thin but still want a good coat. Else if you can find masking tape in a sheet (or just use the cheap stuff and make up a sheet) and draw/copy on the patten it. Then cut it out and apply to the model like that. Anyway, good luck with the build, if you can pull off this paint job she'll look stunning!
mirageiv
Massive credit if you tackle that paint scheme Tim, probably the most tricky I have seen yet. At least with Viggens there are masks available!
Tim Moff
Am thinking I could get the decal instructions, photocopy so they are about the same size as the model and cut out the pieces. Glue to tamiya tape and cut out the masks? Won't work for all cos the drawings are obviously 2D, but maybe some of the flat surfaces, wings, tail etc. Be a SWAG with some of the others and a mix with some maskol or The Microscale Mask that I have heard good things about https://www.hannants.co.uk/product/MSMASK Will try to copy the scheme as close as possible, but that may be a bit tricky! Gotta get on and build first!!

Tim Moff
Got the primer on and the base pit colour: Chipped out the belts and have a PJ Pilot and I think a Hase Pilot (looks like he has been on a better 'diet' than the PJ guy!) for the pit. May go for a green and sand flying suit combo. Will need to think of the traditional names! Not much yet, will start on details and other parts soon!!

Tim Moff
The PJ is the lighter one (yet to connect the arms!!) and the Hase is the larger guy.

Tim Moff
Got on a bit further with the moulded pit and IP's, using a silver dry brush and watercolour pencils: Primed the crew, gonna do 1 in Olive green flight suit, other will be in the Navy desert flight suit. Tim Moff
A bit of work on the crew and the main join this weekend, apologies for the focus on the pilot pics!! Got the rear guy in the desert flight suit with green G Pants. PJ productions Navy Pilot Hasegawa pilot in the green flight suit and G Pants. A bit of tidying up and floreys wash needed. Then I will give em a matt coat less the helmets. Think I have a couple of Soviet Star decals spare for the helmets! Got the lower and upper fuselage mated with the tail planes without too much of a problem. Done in 2 stages with the nose then the tail end using liquid poly. PIt and front IP fit was fine. Next - build it up and look for any filling, sanding etc. Will also get the glass into the Klear. I normally mask the canopies, attach then spray the inner frame colour then prime. However I am awaiting the decal set that comes with a star for the seats, so depending on time, I may have to tape up the pit area so I can crack on.

trickyrich
the top pilot looks to be very happy with himself! You certainly have a good selection of clamps!
Tim Moff
Got on with some more building, bit of filling to do, dip the glass etc. Great news - decals arrived! The more I look at it, I am erring to putting the darker colour down first, masking with the silly putty and some Micro Mask fluid. The darker grey appears to be larger areas, which will give me more 'fudge factor'. Won't be pre or post shading, can't see how this will help the scheme - just some light weathering - looks as if they were well looked after and often painted in new schemes. All references appear with no fuel tank of weapons rails - I may go with the tank as most VFC-13 F5F's appear to have them? Also read that the port cannon was replaced by avionics when the F5F airframes were transferred to the Navy - the ref pics appear to show this as well. I am no 'detail' modeler but I think I will trim it back and do something! Any colour tips for the heat shield area ? Is it steel? I use Humbrol normally for metals and Xtracolor 'exhaust' for the cans? 2 Bobs Decals: Hopefully get the build finished and some primer on soon! trickyrich
Those are some nice decals, I do like the "tiger" scheme, it should look amazing when done. You're probably right in going with the dark colour first, just remember to lighten up the the lighter grey before you put it on as it will darken up a bit. Plus I wouldn't attempt to do the light grey all in one go, for me I'd do it in sections and maybe even alternate doing the stripes as well. Maybe a little bit less messy way of doing the masking.

Great tip ref the lighting up of the lighter grey - spose it will be darker over the darker grey. I was literally going to mask and re-spray - what to you mean by 'I'd do it in sections and maybe even alternate doing the stripes as well. Maybe a little bit less messy way of doing the masking' Sorry maybe being a bit dumb!!
Tim Moff
Thought security was a bit tight at work today!! Got on with some of of the build: Much fun filling and sanding!! Intakes a right pain, as were the slots for weapons rails, undercarriage etc! Canopies now dipped in Klear and drying.....soon be time to fit and get some paint on.....
