BrianI
To take my mind off "things"1, and fancing a nice, large scale, easy to build kit2, I thought I'd pull my Revell 1:12 2010 Ford Shelby GT500 from my stash. It's not my typical style of car to build (I prefer classics such as jaguars, mercs etc, rather than rude boisterous American muscle cars), however it was £25 a couple of months ago in my Localish model shop, so too good a bargain to miss. Obligatory shot of the some of the sprues and parts - kits too big to lay them all out on the floor and get them in a single picture, lol! Massive body moulding! I'm planning for this to be a relaxing out of the box build. The chrome parts look quite good as they are, so sprue runners visible, so hoping to leave them as they are rather than stripping and alclading them. Watch this space! -- Brian 1 Currently off work for the next 6 weeks at least following knee surgery and 8 - 12 weeks on crutches! 2 I kind of wish I didn't decide to rebuild the wheels on my 1:12 Airfix Blower Bentley using wire spokes, as I've now hit a mental block about going anywhere near it! Only got 3 kit wheels left, the other two have been partially bodged to rebuild them..... ooops! Hopefully the easy build of the GT500 will get my large scale kit mojo back! Lloks good the bench tho Hope it goes togther well for you Bikkit
BrianI
Thanks, it looks a pretty basic kit. Would have been nice to have opening doors, ignition wires etc for the engine bay. I don't think the front wheels even steer! Still, not a bad kit for £25, can't expect it to be as detailed as a Pocher!I could probably fettle the doors to open, but to be honest, a nice straight forward out of the box build is just what the doctor ordered! kpnuts
It is a good kit mate ( I thought there was a fit issue with the door pillars, the but that was my fault when I cut the doors out I thought the window frames came with them, but they dont) the whole kit (least as far as I've got) is a great fit.

I have looked at your build log kpnuts - I hope you can continue with your build. I'm in two minds whether to modify the doors to open. Would be a good addition to the build as it's a big enough scale for it to look effective
kpnuts
the mistake I made is the doors open inside the door pillars, which is an easy fix just swap the hinges so the hinge is of. The door not the pillar but it's an easy job.
BrianI
Couldn't sleep, so up early to do some fettling. I had a look at the radiator for the kit. Looks pretty basic with a simple moulded radiator. Remembering that I had some fine wire mesh from my stalled 1:12 Bentley build, I thought, why not replace the crudely moulded radiator with some mesh? I made up a frame from plasticard, then on the front and back of this I placed a rectangle of the wire mesh. Looks much better, if perhaps a little too open? I do have some finer mesh, so I may sandwich a layer of the finer stuff in as well. Still to paint the plasticard frame black as well. At the moment nothing is glued, just testing the idea out. Not even sure how much will be visible on the finished kit. Of course, now that I've started detailing, I'll need to continue to add detail! --edit-- Just put a layer on the finer mesh beneath the larger mesh, either side of the plasticard frame. Looks very good. The two different densities of mesh give a nice "interference" effect, and the finer stuff helps add a bit more detail. Will need to make up another plasticard frame for the rear, then will paint the frames, then assemble! Edited November 9, 2015 by BrianI
BrianI
Time for coffee I think! Dry fitted the rad frame, mesh and support frames, fan and rear fan housing together. You can see the fan through the mesh radiator now! (yes I know the fan isn't centered, it's just a dry fit to see how it's all going to look! )

BrianI
Well, that's the doors and door cards marked for cutting out!
BrianI
Almost 7 hours at this today, and all I've done is got the two doors cut out! Anywhere, are is where I am: Everything is just dry fitted at the moment, so I'll get a better idea of fit once the interior tub is glued to the chassis. But enough for today! BrianI
A bit of progress on the engine and associated gubbin. Wire mesh enhanced radiator finished, glued and painted: Engine coming along nicely. This is going to be a big kit, as even the engine feels quite weighty in your hand! A5h
Happy days and the rad looks great, may have to start mine soon but im not cutting the doors open, Im too new to building to attempt something like that!! Anyway, keep up the good work Edited November 21, 2015 by A5h

BrianI
Engine pretty much finished this evening. Just to let it dry overnight, give it a coat of clear coat, then on with the last couple of decals. So far so good!Still not sure whether I need to prime and spray the chassis black, or leave it just the bare plastic?
BrianI
Engine finished! The decals which came with the kit certainly add detail. Wire mesh to replace the radiator certainly looks the part Unfortunatly I seem to have hit a wall, as the thought of the amount of work still to be done on this kit is giving me the heebie jeebies! BrianI
Cheers kpnuts! I managed to get on quite well, once I saw the suspension fitted and painted. Pretty much all the chassis & running gear painted and fitted! Will upload pics once I get a chance this evening, visiting parents this afternoon. BrianI
Oooh, it's starting to come together nicely now and I have got a few empty sprues, which is always a good sign! Suspensions springs brush painted using citadel Yriel yellow acrylics. Once dried I sealed it using pledge multi surface wax, then done a panel line wash using thinned humbrol black enamel to pick out the spring coils. Main chassis airbrushed alclad gloss black base. Exhaust airbrush humbrol metal cote chrome. Rest of parts brush painted using revel & humbrol acrylics. I'm becoming quite a fan of revel acrylics, they give quite a smooth finish even if brushed using ye olde worlde hairy stick! Top view of chassis! 6" ruler for scale! vontrips
The engine's looking very nice indeed! You pulled the details out of what are very simple parts. Decided on a colour yet? I do like the Graber Blue, even though it's an obvious choice. Been researching already and the kit's not even here yet. Must admit I going to have to drop mine by a scale inch or two. Can't get to liking the stock wheels and to me the tyre walls are a tad too tall! Got any idea for aftermarket rims? Can't face paying a 100 quid for the SMS parts when the kit was only 20! May have to try and make some Halibrand centres with turned rims...heyho!
vontrips
Answered my own question then! http://i916.photobucket.com/albums/ad9/tramhl/Plastic%20Models/Resin/1%2012%20Scale/Shelby%20Wheels/IMG_9142.jpg This guy's doing these lovely Cragars for sensible money. I can see me skimming the lips off a set of those and turning my own ally rims! Edited November 29, 2015 by vontrips

I can see me skimming the lips off a set of those and turning my own ally rims! Those look great! After my experiences trying to scratch build wire wheels for my 1:12 Airfix Blower Bentley, I'm leaving the wheels for the GT500 well alone! The instructions do mention taking 2mm off the height of rear suspension springs, to lower the car at the rear. I haven't done this on mine.
