Scratch Built Triumph TR6

Recommended Posts

New here. This is a TR6 I built as a surprise gift for a friend. Body and wheels cut from a block of RenShape. Everything else handmade.

Hope you like it

I rarely (never actually) build to any accepted scale. I just pick a size I like to work in and make the plans to that size. The TR is about 8" long I think ... close to a 1/24th scale?

My friend doesn't collect models so I made it just to sit on a shelf somewhere at a size he could enjoy. Said he likes it!!

Glad you like it too.

Hi Frank,

thanks for the comments on my Lola. I have been directed here by your link so thanks for that. The TR6 is a beautiful model and captures the lines (Germanic I believe) of the classic roadster very well.

I also noted your Lola T.70 another super sculpt. A friend of mine produced a resin kit of the Lola MkIIIB and it has sold pretty well, not surprising given the popularity of the real car.

Looking forward to more of your inspiring work. I have plans for a Lotus 18 in 1/24 scale. I keep putting off starting it but should really give it a go!

Regards, Steve.

Hi Steve

Glad you liked the TR6. It was a handsome car that still has great appeal. I still remember when I cut the block out that would become the model there was very little shaping to be done! It's a very simple design with modest styling cues that give it its appeal. Good example of less-is-more.

Your Lola has got me thinking I really should pick up my own Lola model and try and finish it. Another wonderful design that.

Winter coming here in Canada and that's when I have more time in my little shed.

Simply beautiful!!!!  So it is only external detail?  It looks so real, that you could open the door and just plop down and sit in it!

Thanks Doc.

Yes, only external detail.

I made it so long ago that I'd like to have it back so I can upgrade it!!   Every model I make usually improves my technique and it becomes a curse that I hate looking at my earliest stuff

The powerboat you commented on really taught me how to silver solder and work with stainless steel rod for the first time.   His trunk luggage rack is done with piano wire rod and ordinary solder which is now blackening.   I'd like to remake that piece especially but he won't hear of it.

All the "metal" on this is done using Renshape (same as the body is carved from) then "plated" with adhesive aluminum tape.   I'd love to now shape proper door handles, tail light frames and bumpers and polish them.

Frank- I am into radio control boats.  I have a few Dumas Scarab boats that have a great scale look to them, with stainless steel railings and hatches.  I have one on sale on Ebay at the moment...

I only mention this because I had to build them to make them look "Scale", so I can appreciate at least some of what you are saying- but no comparison to the soldering work you have done on this boat...

Hi Doc ... not sure what you mean by "have to make it look scale".  Is there a build log here I can see?

Dear god that is amazing :yikes:

Matt and Vinnie    Thanks for the kind words.    It's not as difficult as  you might think!     Just takes practice and start making small parts for a kit.

Just seen this. Absolutely fabulous! This is one of my all-time favourite cars, and if I had the money (lots and lots!!!) I would buy one, even a scrapper, tomorrow!

Beautiful!

I am awe-struck!

Cheers, Alan.

Most of this post got dropped so I'll do it again!

Thanks to all above who took time to post a reply ... greatly appreciate it.

I don't have a lot of pictures of the build.    It's a very simple car to scratch and basically needs only some auto-repair Bondo molded around the wheel wells and sanded out.   Air dam is an easy fabrication and the wheels were done on my woodlathe/toolrest with hand held carving tools.

Taillight lenses from plastic pill bottles etc. and their frames molded from epoxy.   I used those "logs" where you slice of a piece and mold it to shape and let it harden.   File out all the holes ... took several tries though!

Luggage rack is steel wire and solder.    Today I'd use stainless (welding) rod and silver solder as it's stronger and stays shiny.

I see from my pictures the car was ready to paint on day 5 so that shows how simple a design it is to build.

Here you go then ...

0028 Day 4

0048 Day 5

0040 Day 5

A few more finished shots ...

0100 Day 40

0102 Day 40

0107 Day 40

0122 Day 40

Frank

Other scratch builds ...

Lancia D50    Sport Fisherman 36   Half-Hull yachts    Beneteau 51 sailboat    Varnished wooden cars    Flying Scotsman A3   Lola T-70    Billings Dragon
