Col.
For a while I've been planning to cross-kit the ICM IX with the Airfix XIX to provide the majority of bits for a PR.XI in 48th scale. At the moment I'm favouring using the majorty of the XIX mated to the IX nose, tail, underwing radiators etc. So that leaves the Griffon nose, bigger tail, deeper radiators along with the IX wing and center fuselage. Does that make a XIV?
wellsprop
It does (near as makes no difference anyway). Tonyot has done it http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234972560-spitfire-mkxiv-in-148th/?p=1832605 Ben

NPL
If you use an ICM Mk.VIII you should have the retractable tailwheel.
Troy Smith
If you use an ICM Mk.VIII you should have the retractable tail wheel IIRC all the ICM VIII/VIII/IX kits use the same basic fuselage, with lines to cut out the doors, but not the tailwheel itself. These are a spare option in the Hase kit, though it woul not be hard to make one.
gingerbob
Oops, now that I look more closely I understand the question- trying to multi-task! bob p.s. Troy, early ICM boxings were type specific, but later they "opened the floodgates" and gave all the various parts. Thanks lads - useful links to read through again If you use an ICM Mk.VIII you should have the retractable tailwheel. Alas it's a project based on what I have in the stash and that's the IX kit. IIRC all the ICM VIII/VIII/IX kits use the same basic fuselage, with lines to cut out the doors, but not the tailwheel itself. Some scratch-building or an appeal to he BM massive for any spare bits will get around that issue I'm sure.
Col.
Had a longer look at the box of bits this evening and sure enough there is parts for the VIII type retractable tailwheel Then a quick search on Hannants shows a few decal options; Some Belgian machines for a bit of colour and change from the ordinary https://www.hannants.co.uk/product/SY48908 or a pair of unusual RAF examples https://www.hannants.co.uk/product/FSD48001S MJW Models also have these http://www.mjwmodels.co.uk/x48127-148-supermarine-spitfire-mkxive-mkxviii-decals-7-2485-p.asp http://www.mjwmodels.co.uk/x48130-148-supermarine-spitfire-mkxivmkxviii-decals-7-2488-p.asp which seem to give a selection of RAF options. So no shortage of decals then. There's also an Aires cockpit set but given it's 'designed to fit' the fat Academy kit (we all know how much shaving, sanding, filing, scraping it can take to make that happen with Aires) I very much doubt it'll squeeze into the ICM fuselage. Tail-Dragon
I continue to hope that Airfix will release a Mk XIVe. They are almost there with the Mk XIX

Tail-Dragon
Dare say they will announce the XI & XIVe around the time I start hacking up the two donor kits That is the exact reason that I haven't started chopping - the moment it becomes irreversible, Airfix or Eduard or somebody will announce a state of the art kit!

But think how much more boring life will become when the Mk XIV (and PR Mk.XI) are readily available. Then it will be possible without any (almost) surgery to produce the entire Spitfire and Seafire series in 1/48!
