DaveJL Posted January 19, 2016 Author Posted January 19, 2016 Thanks Mish. Good bit of work to go yet!
Shaun Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 Looking good Dave, how about adding the camera pod to the F-14? http://www.anft.net/f-14/f14-detail-testequip-14l.jpg
DaveJL Posted January 19, 2016 Author Posted January 19, 2016 Was thinking that mate, but no idea if they're available in 1/48!
DaveJL Posted January 23, 2016 Author Posted January 23, 2016 More done. Masked off the F-14 canopy and cleaned up all the remaining filler, bar that behind the cockpit. Added the pylons and phoenix pallets too. On the A-4, filler on the intakes was cleaned up, added the centre pylon and refuelling prob. The black dot is the location to be drilled out for the display stand. Not much more to be done (a bit of cleaning up on the F-14 and the cockpit/pilot of the A-4) before I can start painting. More soon. Dave 1
DaveJL Posted January 29, 2016 Author Posted January 29, 2016 A bit more done. Modelling time has been severely depleted recently due to work! Anyway, got most of the filler cleaned up but had to remove and reattach the canopy on the F-14 as the RIO's coaming had come loose. Dry fitted the canopy on the A-4 and it's a perfect fit so it will be added after painting. Just a few more small things to do then both are ready for primer and paint. I managed to roughly set up the display stand in the meantime: Maybe should have got a bigger bit of wood for the base but will do! Just need to add a small plaque and the base will be completed. Hopefully have some painting progress to show next week. More soon. Dave 3
DaveJL Posted February 4, 2016 Author Posted February 4, 2016 More done over the past few days and we're picking up pace. The F-14 was cleaned up fully and canopy mask reapplied. Ready for paint now: While that was going on, I managed to get the A-4 painted: Will get it glossed over the next few days and hopefully get the decals on at the weekend or start of next week. 'Viper' has also been finished: Note he's had to have some surgery to fit! Also finished off the TACTS pods and AIM-7 (which just requires gloss and some blue bands to donate a training round): Next up will be to decal the A-4 and get the painting on the F-14 done. More soon. Dave 1
DaveJL Posted February 6, 2016 Author Posted February 6, 2016 More done. Decals on the A-4 and sealed in with another coat of gloss: Also started painting the F-14, no pictures as yet. But i've been using this essential reference: Great way to spend time modelling too! Next up is to add a panel line wash to the A-4, followed by a flat coat then just add Viper, canopy and a few antennae. The main F-14 painting should be done in a few days all being well. More soon. Dave 2
DaveJL Posted February 8, 2016 Author Posted February 8, 2016 That A-4 looks great Dave Cheers mate. More done today. Panel wash on the A-4: And off again: Added the TACTS pod and the antennae, followed by a flat coat: Just need to add 'Viper', the canopy and give it a light dusting of weathering. F-14 is also progressing well. More soon. Dave 2
Shaun Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 Nice work Dave, I thought this was Jesters jet? Cool patch http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0865/6642/products/image_eeeab3fa-e050-46a4-a914-3a43fc5a80a1_1024x1024.jpg?v=1438897950
DaveJL Posted February 8, 2016 Author Posted February 8, 2016 Cheers Shaun. In the scene i'm depicting, 'Viper' is flying the 3 tone camouflaged A-4 (theres a clip on page one of the thread) And that is a brilliant patch! I wonder where one could buy it?
Dermo245 Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 Love this thread - great stuff! Dave, do you know if those decals are also in 1/72 by any chance?? Cheers, Dermot
DaveJL Posted February 8, 2016 Author Posted February 8, 2016 Love this thread - great stuff! Dave, do you know if those decals are also in 1/72 by any chance?? Cheers, Dermot Thanks Dermot. I don't think they are, Fightertown don't dip into the 1/72 market as far as I know. Brilliant work, looking good mate. Cheers Ruari! 1
lordstrpe Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Dave, where did you get the base for this from?
DaveJL Posted February 9, 2016 Author Posted February 9, 2016 Dave, where did you get the base for this from? A mate of mine is a carpenter and he had a few bits of wood left over so sorted it for me. You can get similar ones on eBay.
DaveJL Posted February 10, 2016 Author Posted February 10, 2016 More done. The A-4 is finished ready to fit to the base: Not going to fit it to the base until the F-14 is ready so I can get the angles etc right. Speaking of the F-14, the painting has been completed, decals are on and everything sealed in with gloss ready for panel line wash. The 'Top Gun' jets were very worn and weather beaten so I have a bit of licence to dirty it up! (And it means I can watch the movie again ) More soon. Dave 1
lordstrpe Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 Looking good Dave! Like the weathering. Did you use pigments on the Skyhawk?
DaveJL Posted February 10, 2016 Author Posted February 10, 2016 Looking good Dave! Like the weathering. Did you use pigments on the Skyhawk? Cheers. Yes, light dusting of Tamiya weathering powder was used.
DaveJL Posted February 11, 2016 Author Posted February 11, 2016 More done. First job was the panel line wash on the F-14: Removed after about 30 minutes: One i'd removed the excess, I added a dash of wash to the varnish and lightly applied this over the model. Gives that spotty/stained effect seen so often on the F-14. Ties in well with the different shades of grey along the panel lines. Added the AIM-7, TACTS pod, antennae and horizontal stabilisers before sealing everything with a flat coat: Once dry, I removed the masking from the canopy, added the remaining antennae, attached the wings and exhausts: All that needs done now is to add some weathering powders and attach the pitot tube. More soon. Dave 3
