Ripper 101 - Revell 1/48 F/A-18F on a pole!

Recommended Posts

Morning all,

Thought I'd post the latest off the workbench. The twin seat super hornet is rapidly becoming one of my favourite aircraft, aided and abetted by the great range of high viz schemes the US Navy churns out. Although the Hasegawa kit is better, it is also rather more expensive. I had the Hasegawa VFA11 Red Rippers boxing and am in the middle of using a Steel Beach resin conversion to make it into an EA-18G. That did leave a rather super decal sheet going spare, so I got a Revell kit for a good price, and decided to do an inflight model. Results as below! I added a Eduard Brassin Maverick, GBU12s and 500lb JDAMs from the Hasegawa weapon sets, spare Hasegawa fuel tanks, Hasegawa figures from their super hornet kits, and a Steel Beach Advanced Crew Station for the rear cockpit. This scheme is from about 2008 during combat ops over Iraq (I think) and represents a mid point where this airframe did have the ACS but not the new ECS pipes which were added later. Paints are a mixture of xtracrylix, Tamiya and Vallejo. A good, fun project!

Hello,Paul - My compliments on a grand looking build of your 'Hornet'. I love the quality and detail of the paint and finishing work together with the in flight pose.Your attention has also given the crew figures good detail including the air hoses. All the best,Paul.

You nailed it - very smart and I love the in flight look. Clearly 101 was much more colourful in 2008 with AirWing3!

here's a couple of Ripper 100 & 101 in Oct 2010 (and yes I'm no photographer!)

Sweet build. I too love the way that we are seeing a bit more colour on jets again.

I am a big fan of the F-18 and am still bewildered why the MOD and Royal Navy didn't go for a conventional carrier and fill it with a load of these beauties.....
