Brundledonk
After that I assembled the bracket that allows the radiator grill to move up and down to deploy the "crankomatic" and sprayed the bulkhead in Alclad steel and gave it a Flory dark dirt wash (note the pin marks on the part, Imreally should have sanded them off, but didn't think that they would notice) I'm blaming the Alclad fumes 20150430_170757 by peter hutchings, on Flickr And just for sheets and giggles I did a quick test fit so I could have a looksee 20150430_170916 by peter hutchings, on Flickr 20150430_171019 by peter hutchings, on Flickr The hand crank got a coat of zero rubber black and the handle masked and the shaft got the Alclad chrome treatment It's not a super mirror finish due to the black not being shiny enough, but it's still pretty bling and looks about right 20150430_164344 by peter hutchings, on Flickr __________________ Edited November 2, 2015 by Brundledonk
Brundledonk
While I had the chrome and black out I did the rear view mirror too It wasn't a great success to be honest, it was my own fault as after laying down the Chrome I used a cotton bud to polish the surface and it marked the finish (if you zoom in you can see the lines where I wiped it and left scratches) I should have used a piece of cotton, but such is life 20150430_165007 by peter hutchings, on Flickr While not being my greatest achievement, it's still pretty reflective 20150430_165050 by peter hutchings, on Flickr Gearstick base coated 20150430_164421 by peter hutchings, on Flickr And the steering wheel, These will get detail paint and weathering tomorrow 20150430_162454 by peter hutchings, on Flickr Edited November 2, 2015 by Brundledonk

Brundledonk
Trevor decided he didn't like the way the bulkhead that goes behind the grill looked (flipping mythical creatures think they know it all) So he made me get out the paints again then add some washes then some pastels (he gets so uptight at times) I think it looks a bit too high in contrast and overdone but the Unicorn assures me that inside the bay it will look fine 20150430_182235 by peter hutchings, on Flickr He's flipping right ! It doesn't look too bad in there, and the pin marks don't show up too badly now 20150430_182326 by peter hutchings, on Flickr I managed to get the brackets on the seat painted too, I just need to give them a bit of a scuff and a dirty up 20150430_140636 by peter hutchings, on Flickr __________________ Edited November 2, 2015 by Brundledonk
Brundledonk
Ok I'm back to the van build, real life got in the way yesterday so I didn't get a chance to sit at the bench. I got some time in the cave today but didn't get much done, I'll post the progress anyway though as I'm sure you are all dying of anticipation given how exciting the last update was (remember the drama over the glove fitting on the shaft ? I'm still sweating over it !) First thing I did today was give the chrome sprues a bath in bleach, nothing special it's just a really cheap one that we buy from Home Bargains, it does the same job as the branded ones, it just doesn't taste as nice... Ok ok I'm only kidding ! There's no difference in the taste whatsoever. 20150502_111437 by peter hutchings, on Flickr And I sanded out those pesky pin marks inside the cab, I'm still trying to decide what I'm going to do in regards to the floor, im going to make some rubber foot mats but I can't decide what colour told paint the floor or wether to try and make some carpets, I watched the movie yesterday and it did show me a few things that I could adress, but I never saw a clear shot of the floor, so I'm probably going to have to use my imagination on that bit. Brundledonk
If you cast your mind back to the last update you may remember that I had given the steering wheel and column a base coat of black paint (I will forgive you if you dont as I realise the excitement of the glove incident may have left you with a mild case of post traumatic amnesia) Anyway, as the movie van is pretty beaten up I wanted to weather mine so I started by adding some wear using a mid grey Vallejo paint 20150502_124532 by peter hutchings, on Flickr Once that had dried I overpainted the grey areas here and there with a tiny bit of silver and then over that with my old faithful 8b pencil To finish I rubbed some sand and orange Pastel dust over that and finally sealed it with a light (and I mean light, really light, I'm not kidding man ! You need to spray this lighter than a bag of feathers filled with helium, on the moon, no not the moon that's too much gravity, spray it in orbit, you know, where the floaty thing happens !) SPRAY THE MATT COAT LIGHT OR THE PASTEL WILL DISAPEAR LIKE A SOCK IN THE DRYER 20150502_125957 by peter hutchings, on Flickr Hopefully it looks like it's worn from 1000s of miles of use notice how the pastels are visible, this is because I sprayed a LIGHT matt coat on 20150502_130005 by peter hutchings, on Flickr __________________ Edited November 2, 2015 by Brundledonk

Brundledonk
Another little thing that needed some help was the handbrake, the kit supplied one is pretty grim and looks like now hand brake I've ever seen before 20150502_141843 by peter hutchings, on Flickr Not only did it have those nasty pin marks on the side, the top is square and has a wierd bulge on it, I have no idea where Airfix got the idea for this from, certainly not the movie as when I watched it last night there is a part where Gromit pulls the brake to stop sharply and the close up shows that it's a regular tubular hand brake with a release button on the end 20150502_141851 by peter hutchings, on Flickr So I had a dig around amongst the off cuts of odds and sods I keep in a little tub and in a moment of scratchbuilding inspiration came up with this 20150502_141859 by peter hutchings, on Flickr I'm quite pleased with it as It's much better than the kit one Edited November 2, 2015 by Brundledonk
Brundledonk
The next problem with the hand brake is the position, airfix tell you to fit it in the right hand side of the drivers seat (looking at the picture again and I can see that it's not a brake, it's an in car stapler) 20150502_142143 by peter hutchings, on Flickr The problem with the position is that I. The movie the hand brake was quite clearly between the seats, im not really sure what Airfix were thinking when they come up with this, I can only guess that the designers did this bit on a Friday afternoon after a liquid lunch at the pub Mine will be going here 20150502_142235 by peter hutchings, on Flickr That meant that there was a hole surplus to requirements, so I sharpend a bit of sprue thusly 20150502_142414 by peter hutchings, on Flickr __________________ Edited November 2, 2015 by Brundledonk
Brundledonk
And then jolly well rammed it in there ! Brundledonk
Sup my Homies ! 20150503_152104 by peter hutchings, on Flickr Pete is having a break from the fumes (the puny human) so I thought I had better update his progress. Do me a favour and give me a shout if you see the unicorn, I put laxatives in his bag of oats and he's after some payback. Fluffy Ps Don't stare too long into my eye sockets as bad things happen, if you've seen ghost rider you will know what I'm talking about, and I don't think Pete will be happy to come back to find out that I've eaten the souls of his forum buddies Here are all chrome parts after Pete retrieved them from the bleach bath (bath is something Pete should look into as he is kicking up a bit, but I don't have the heart to tell him) 20150503_131601 by peter hutchings, on Flickr The bleach removed the chrome no problem but there is a kind of clear varnish on the parts that just wouldn't shift, you can sand it or scrape it away, but the bleach didn't touch it. I'm not kidding this stuff is tough ! NASA could've coated the tiles on the Space Shuttle with it as I'm certain it would survive re entry I suggested a bit of my demon breath might do the job, but when we did a test on a bit of sprue it vaporised!! 20150503_131647 by peter hutchings, on Flickr I said to Pete that the coating might turn out to be advantageous come Alcad time, so the parts were snipped from the sprues and plenty seam cleaning did occur 20150503_135211 by peter hutchings, on Flickr Edited November 3, 2015 by Brundledonk
Brundledonk
After looking at pics of the van in the movie, we both felt that the kit ones were a little to perfect and needed some dents, so a few were carved out with the scalpel and then a blob of liquid cement over the top to soften them a bit 20150503_141832 by peter hutchings, on Flickr It shows a little better in this pic, but I assured Pete that when the Alclad goes on it will really pop (And if it doesn't, then what's he going to do ? Brundledonk
next it was time to add some wear and tear to the bumpers, Pete was umming and ahhing over this, but i knew exactly what to do WARNING The following picture contains nudity NSFW ! A naked flame (bottom of the barrel well and truly scraped there lol) 20150503_151914 by peter hutchings, on Flickr The bumpers were held over the flame, or the flame held under the bumper (I forget which way now) and while the plastic was still soft some dents were pushed into them 20150503_141308 by peter hutchings, on Flickr Being a typical scaredy human, Pete insisted on doing a test on a bit of sprue before trying the bumper, and he noticed that the clear varnish/unobtainium that the bleach refused to shift, could be made to bubble before the plastic softened, the effect looked a bit like corrosion so he added it to the front bumper, he does have the odd good idea now and again (not often mind !) 20150503_141320 by peter hutchings, on Flickr Edited November 2, 2015 by Brundledonk
Brundledonk
Now it was Alclad time, I insisted that Pete wore his respirator , not for his health, but to prevent the Unicorn appearing (I couldnt care less if Pete snuffs it) Alclad chrome was used and it was sprayed directly onto the plastic with no undercoat, this is where the bomb proof clear varnish that was left on the parts came in handy as although its harder than a coffin nail its soooo smooooooooooth The trick to getting a mirror chrome finish is a super silky smooth gloss black surface for the Alclad to reflect off of. But Pete wasn't too concerned about getting a really "bright" chrome as it might look out of scale, so leaving the parts as they were and spraying the chrome straight on, should fingers crossed get the effect he wants And in a happy accident it didn't come out too bad 20150503_150016 by peter hutchings, on Flickr I will tell Pete to weather these parts before they need to be fitted to the van 20150503_150026 by peter hutchings, on Flickr And off course I got the muppet to spray all the parts while the Alclad was in the brush 20150503_150216 by peter hutchings, on Flickr Edited November 3, 2015 by Brundledonk
Brundledonk
As you can see, even though the Alclad was sprayed straight over the plastic, they are still pretty reflective 20150503_145929 by peter hutchings, on Flickr There is a really subtle yellowish tint to the parts that makes them look nice and old, which I guess is a side effect of the underlying plastic Also note the chrome thumb nail, Pete said he was going to paint his whole body in it and get Mrs Brundledonk to dig out her Sarah Conner outfit, for some T-1000 role play shenanigans after lights out. I hope he's got enough Alclad left (still he won't need a lot for his pecker hehehe) 20150503_145952 by peter hutchings, on Flickr And a quick hubcap/wheel dry fit looksee 20150503_150323 by peter hutchings, on Flickr __________________ Edited November 3, 2015 by Brundledonk
Brundledonk
I don't know if Pete had mentioned but I'm a massive Wallace and Grommit fan, "A grand Day out" , "The Wrong Trousers" "A Close Shave" and my personal favourite "The gates of hell" oh wait, I think that's a demon only exclusive. Anyway, Pete was all set to spray the radiator grill chrome, until I pointed out that in the movie only the surround is chrome and the grill is in fact white. So out with the gloss white, and a drop of Modelair silver for the badge 20150503_150854 by peter hutchings, on Flickr And wait for it............ Brundledonk
Update time again, no Fluffy today (I don't want him getting a big skull) so you will have to put up,with me for a bit I wanted to get the underbody painted today and needed to prime the plastic. I bought a couple of cans of this primer a little while ago from the 99p store, but I have been a bit hesitant to use it on a kit in case it melted it or something lol ! But I figured it couldn't do too much harm so I decided to give it a whirl 20150505_112353 by peter hutchings, on Flickr Literally 10seconds later I had covered the chassis, this stuff breaks the sound barrier when it comes out, seriously any quicker and it would have been primed before I got the lid off the can ! It's quite thick and a very dark grey, but it dried to quite a smooth finish, you just have to be really quick with the back and fourth action or you risk completely annihilating the part ! Oh yeah one other thing IT STINKS ! Man I'm not kidding, even with the spray booth running the Petecave was a gas chamber ! I had to evacuate and let the fallout settle before I could go back in there 20150505_112406 by peter hutchings, on Flickr I wasn't certain if the noxious fumes had fallen to a level low enough to sustain organic life, so I sent Mrs Brundledonk down first (hehehe Canary sprang to mind here) when I was certain she hadn't passed out, I ventured down and gave the chassis a light coat of Tamiya hull red I didn't worry about getting full coverage as I wanted a little of the grey to show through for the later stages (artistic bent innit) 20150505_114209 by peter hutchings, on Flickr Edited November 3, 2015 by Brundledonk
