Brundledonk
As I'm unable to carry on working in my man cave due to commitments with DIY (oh god please send Nick knowles and the boys round) I'm going to shamelessly copy and paste another WIP that I did on another forum a little while ago over to here. It's not very long but I had a load of fun building it and Everybody likes Wallace and Gromit (don't they ?) and if you dont or you've already seen this then you can always ignore it, I won't be offended and heck it's the Internet so it's not as if its real life is it lol ! As I'm copying and paring the text, some of it will make no sense ( for example Fluffy) but it's the easiest way for me to get it posted without having to type it all out again I'll try and get it all up tonight, but if it goes quiet it's probably just down to the fact I have bored myself to sleep lol, so please bare with me Pete Right then, my ju-88 group build kit is in stasis for a little while until I can scrape a few quid together to get the paints I need (paint is cheap but postage is a mare lol) I don't really want to be starting another kit as I have half a dozen ongoing projects that need finishing and in the back of my mind that bugs me lol. But I need to build something or I will just be bouncing off the walls, finances at the moment mean that I'm unable to carry on with the work that needs doing in the house and poor weather here again means I can't get anything done outside, my daughter Rebecca asked me to build this and to be honest this kind of kit will be just what I need right now as its nice and simple not too many parts (so a good chance it will get finished) and as I don't have to worry too much about accuracy I can let the old artistic side loose ! Also the last time I made a kit like this I was smiling the whole way through, and that can't be a bad thing either. So lardies and gentlworms I present to you Wallace and Grommit in The Curse of the Were Rabbit 20150429_100015 by peter hutchings, on Flickr The kit is a kind of starter kit and is clearly aimed at kids (that's me sorted then) as it's very robust and has obviously been designed with playability in mind (expect plenty of vrooming through the build) And it comes with a brush, a tube of sticky and a lot of little plastic pots of acrylic paint 20150429_100704 by peter hutchings, on Flickr I have had some experience with these paints in the dim and distant past as it was a couple of Airfix starter kits that got me back into the hobby a few years ago. My memory of these paints is that they were pants (and socks) so they will probably stay where they are, but you never know they might come in handy as colour reference if they don't work out __________________ What follows is the obligatory sprue shots, I am known for my marathon length, soul sapping build threads and as this is a simple kit I need to pad things out to keep the page count up lol ! Also I thought you might want to see what you get in the box Here's the main body, it's a fair size and is also the plastic is really thick it feels very strong and not at all like a plastic model kit. 20150429_101222 by peter hutchings, on Flickr I think the intention of the kit designers was for you to leave the body in its moulded colour and not to paint it (again catering to the younger modeller) but I will be painting mine. There is a moulded in "rust" effect all over the body and it looks a little bit heavy to my eyes so I will probably adress that as the build moves along, but we will see what occurs Edited October 31, 2015 by Brundledonk
Brundledonk
Here's the chassis and its ejector pin city all over the place 20150429_101237 by peter hutchings, on Flickr Seats, dash and 5 wheels, so I guess there will be a spare wheel stored in the back of the van 20150429_101435 by peter hutchings, on Flickr Five soft vinyl tyres and metal axles (I can't wait for the vroom moment on this one) 20150429_101047 by peter hutchings, on Flickr A chrome sprue, This will be getting the bleach strip treatment, it's a shame really as the finish is really quite nice, but its a little too bright and I will never be able to match the finish where they get removed from the sprue, so it will be Alclad for these 20150429_100933 by peter hutchings, on Flickr Edited October 30, 2015 by Brundledonk
Brundledonk
Plenty of clear parts too 20150429_101014 by peter hutchings, on Flickr And the stars of the movie, These are moulded in the same unsandable soft vinyl that the other Wallace and Grommit figures were, so I'll be looking forward to seam removal (not) 20150429_101041 by peter hutchings, on Flickr The crews bodies along with a little rabbit, these are vinyl too but not as soft as the heads 20150429_101511 by peter hutchings, on Flickr Another sprue (I can't think of anything humerous to say about this one) A nice little touch is that it comes with parts so you can build it with a little mechanical hand that pops out of the front grill and grabs the starter handle 20150430_120403 by peter hutchings, on Flickr Don't worry, this is the last sprue Doors, bulkhead and some other bits that I have no idea of where they go 20150429_101622 by peter hutchings, on Flickr An uninspiring black and white instruction booklet, the Shaun the sheep ones were in full colour with photos of the filming props. But it's clear enough although the colour call outs are numbers ie 21 and not black or whatever 20150429_101727 by peter hutchings, on Flickr __________________ Edited November 3, 2015 by Brundledonk
Brundledonk
And finally a nice little decal sheet, I love the "eat more cheese" bumper sticker 20150429_101709 by peter hutchings, on Flickr So there we have it, looks like it should be a whole heap of fun to build. I have made a start on this and will update in a little while, my hands are aching from the typing lol ! Brundledonk
Okey dokey build time, Fluffy is a big Wallace and Grommit fan so he was well up,for this one Look, he even put his happy hat on for the occasion 20150429_155036 by peter hutchings, on Flickr I started with the wheels, I don't usually leave parts on the sprue when I paint them but as fluffy pointed out the attachment points would end up inside the tyres and the parts didn't need any clean up, so it would be easier this way that mounting them all individually on skewers 20150429_153300 by peter hutchings, on Flickr The wheels need to be white and the hub caps will be chrome, so I gave them a prime with the old Halfords White primer, this is quite coarse but it covers well and It needs to, to cover the green plastic that this is moulded in 20150429_155126 by peter hutchings, on Flickr Here's the result after a quick blast 20150429_154225 by peter hutchings, on Flickr Edited October 30, 2015 by Brundledonk
Brundledonk
It looks ok in the pic above, but if you look at this close up picture you should be able to see that the primer didn't fully cover in the recesses of the wheel. If I had tried to get full coverage (even with 2 or 3 light passes) I would have ended up with a really thick coat that obliterated the detail 20150429_175201 by peter hutchings, on Flickr So after the primer had dried (not long as it was a light coat) I loaded the airbrush up with some Tamiya gloss white and sprayed into the recesses where the primer had missed and all over the wheel. The finish is more of a satin than a gloss finish and is the perfect finish for the wheels, these will be getting weathered too as pics of the filming miniature show it was modelled to be pretty beaten up 20150429_175154 by peter hutchings, on Flickr Fluffy was feeling a little peckish so I made seat kebabs 20150429_155112 by peter hutchings, on Flickr Edited October 30, 2015 by Brundledonk
Brundledonk
The seats got a blast of Halfords finest too 20150429_180450 by peter hutchings, on Flickr It was at this point Trevor my fume fuelled Unicorn appeared and it all kicked off (fluffy and Trevor don't really get along) there was bone, horn, Bits of Easter hat and glittery poop all over the place ! And this was the reason for Trevors unannounced visit 20150429_155335 by peter hutchings, on Flickr The last time I had changed the filter in my booth Fred Flintsone was still at school ! And I had been breathing in the fumes (I know better and should be wearing my respirator anyway) So a quick swap and Trevor was on his hooves and back to spangly sparkly rainbow land 20150429_155432 by peter hutchings, on Flickr So with a bit of oxygen in the Pete cave and the figment of my imagination out of the way, I got to painting the seats. I wanted to try and get a kind of period vinyl look to the seats and though that a reddish (that's reddish and not radish) brown might work, So I chose these colours 20150429_185045 by peter hutchings, on Flickr __________________ Edited October 31, 2015 by Brundledonk
Brundledonk
I mixed in the airbrush cup and started with red and just added the other colours test spraying on a bit of paper until I got a shade I was happy with 20150429_183542 by peter hutchings, on Flickr Fluffy liked the colour but thought they were a bit plain, so I used a black artists pencil to line the edges and in the ribs of the cushions 20150429_184503 by peter hutchings, on Flickr A light spray of satin varnish finished them off nicely 20150429_184926 by peter hutchings, on Flickr Edited October 31, 2015 by Brundledonk
Brundledonk
I quite like how they turned out, he's a clever disembodied chap is our Fluffy 20150429_184535 by peter hutchings, on Flickr The pencil worked a treat, I just need to paint the seat frames 20150429_184540 by peter hutchings, on Flickr I wanted to assemble the figures next as I knew from building the other kits that cleaning the vinyl was a pain, so better to get it out of the way early. I think I have the special edition of this kit , with bonus bad "fittingness" 20150429_162806 by peter hutchings, on Flickr It looked like this bit might be hampering the fit 20150429_162855 by peter hutchings, on Flickr Edited October 31, 2015 by Brundledonk
Brundledonk
So out with the clippers, But Wallace started screaming "don't cut me Pete, please don't " It was breaking my heart to see the fear in his eyes 20150429_163010 by peter hutchings, on Flickr So out with the blind fold 20150429_163227 by peter hutchings, on Flickr The screaming started but the act was done 20150429_163316 by peter hutchings, on Flickr But it was all for nothing as it still didn't fit ! 20150429_164422 by peter hutchings, on Flickr Edited October 31, 2015 by Brundledonk
Brundledonk
More drastic action was required, So with Wallace begging for his life it was back out with the blindfold and the surgery began 20150429_164535 by peter hutchings, on Flickr The procedure went like clockwork ! 20150429_164753 by peter hutchings, on Flickr The giblet from his neck got glued back in 20150429_164943 by peter hutchings, on Flickr And everything fitted much better 20150429_165005 by peter hutchings, on Flickr Edited October 31, 2015 by Brundledonk
Brundledonk
His head can be glued to the giblet now 20150429_165022 by peter hutchings, on Flickr A nice side effect is that now Wallace can see where he's been 20150429_165047 by peter hutchings, on Flickr Another added bonus of all this butchery is that I will be able to paint the head seperate from the body now. This gave me an idea, the instructions show the hand to be trapped between the 2 halves of the body 20150429_165311 by peter hutchings, on Flickr But a simple amputation in a similar vein as the head (see what I did there lol) means I can keep the hands seperate For painting too 20150429_165327 by peter hutchings, on Flickr "Doctor I can't feel my legs" . Brundledonk
Fixing the stub in Here will give me an attachment point to add the super glue ixing the stub in Here will give me an attachment point to add the super glue 20150429_165757 by peter hutchings, on Flickr Now onto the seams on the vinyl, they aren't that bad but leaving them will spoil the look as when finished they need to like they are made from modelling clay, I used a scalpel to trim the seams on the last ones, but there is a risk of gouging the part and also the Doctors at the facility take a dim view of me using sharp objects 20150429_170847 by peter hutchings, on Flickr So this time I decided to try a few different sanding sticks to see if any would work, the standard micro mesh ones I have just made the vinyl go furry ! Brundledonk
Righty ho then, time for today's madness. I didn't get as much done in this as I had planned but I have done a little bit so I might as well post it up. I started with the "auto crank mechanism" I invented something similar in my young free and single days but I called it a "hand shandymatic" but i think that's best left for some of the "other" solo hobby forums on the darker side of the web Shown here in the destructions thusly 20150430_120403 by peter hutchings, on All the parts chopped off the sprues ready for clean up. The instructions tell you glue the "glove" halves around the end of the crank, I didn't want to do it this way as it would make painting everything a lot more difficult than it needs to be, and as I was planning to use Alclad I wanted to avoid tape on the painted parts. So I was banking on the vinyl being flexible enough that after gluing and painting I could just squeeze it in (we'll see how that worked out further on 20150430_120356 by peter hutchings, on Flickr After seam cleaning (what a pain in the bunghole that was) I sprayed the parts with zero rubber black laquer, it goes on nice and smooth and dries instantly so it makes a great base for,the Alclad 20150430_130254 by peter hutchings, on Flickr Edited November 3, 2015 by Brundledonk
Brundledonk
I gave them a quick blast of Alclad aluminium, waited for Trevor the fume induced Unicorn , and when he appeared we took the opportunity to nip outside in between the rain showers and took this pic The parts just push together without glue and can move, hence everything looking a bit wonky donky in the pic 20150430_131715 by peter hutchings, on Flickr Back in the Petecave and Trevor thought it would look cool if I sprayed a bit of pale burnt metal over the shafts (I think he just wants me to breathe in the Allcad in the hope that a "Mrs Unicorn will appear) 20150430_131402 by peter hutchings, on Flickr So with that duly done and dusted, my glittery poop laying horned equine friend, then advised that a nice sepia wash added carefully around the joints would look bang tidy, or "simply spiffing" if you are speaking the queens. 20150430_140158 by peter hutchings, on Flickr Edited November 3, 2015 by Brundledonk
Brundledonk
The gloved hand got a coat of matt White (I must say I was impressed at how well the seam turned out after sanding with the Mylar stick again) 20150430_140331 by peter hutchings, on Flickr WARNING !
