Nocoolname
Hi Folks! Having just picked up a couple of the new 1/48 Kinetic SHAR 1's I was wondering whether it would be feasible to convert one to a GR3? In terms of the 'major' surgery, is it just a case of chopping and swapping the front ends or are there significant differences in the rest of the design that would need to be considered? All thoughts and advice would be welcome! Cheers for now!
xffw45343tg
Sounds like a thankless task - but if there really is no other option you'll want to consider: the different dog tooth arrangement on the wing leading edge(?), the recess in the upper portion of the intake for the lower sitting canopy frame the non-bubbled canopy significantly different cockpit controls to reflect the absence of radar and inclusion of moving map display plus a host of relocated controls Mk.9 seat in the GR vs Mk.10 in the FRS absence of pitot in fin Antenna fitment (I'd have to check the details but I think the positioning differs) All the LRMTS gubbins that I'm sure you know about Others will add more but can I suggest the easier conversion to an FA2 and acquisition of a GR.3 kit? That way you get an extra Harrier!! Kirk
Giorgio N
IIRC the airbrake is also different between the two variants (IIRC the Sea Harrier's is smaller) Said that, a number of modellers in the past have built great models of the Sea harrier by combining the Monogram GR.1 rear with the Airfix SHAR front. You could do the opposite using wing and rear fuselage of the Kinetik kit and the front and other relevant details from the Airfix GR.3. It will require a lot of work but can be done. If it's a better or worse option compared to simply detailing the Airfix kit, this is hard to tell...
xffw45343tg
this is hard to tell... ... but not that hard.
AnonymousAA72
Not that hard at all......I actually started converting an FA2 into a GR3 a few months ago.... http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234973929-harrier-gr3-148th-scaledecals-on-mostly-go/?hl=%2Bharrier+%2Bgr3 Edited October 16, 2015 by Bill Clark
Dave Fleming
FRS1 and GR3 should have the same leading edge. The SHAR airbrake was shorter than the GR3 one - but the actual bay remained the same size, the GR3 one lay flush with the fuselage skin for it's rear section
xffw45343tg
Blimey Bill. That's quite a model. I'll get my coat... Thanks for the correction Dave. I was having a senior moment in which FA2 wings mysteriously became involved. Just remembered that the landing lights are different too. I've only added the nose gear and outriders since those photo's were taken, though have made a start on the stores...
Nocoolname
Great stuff folks! Brilliant reference material. Now that I see it is possible I think I'll snag a GR3 kit to use as a template. Hope you manage to get yours finished Bill, it looks cracking! Cheers for now! stever219
The Sea Harrier cockpit floor was raised 11 inches relative to the GR.1/GR.3. The SHAR FRS.1 pitot was above the radome; that on the FA.2 was moved to the fin.

NG899
Last year an FA2, this year and FRS1. Mmmm... If you can wait a year or so, who knows what Kinetic may have in store as their next Harrier release? I'd counsel patience... unless you have a pressing deadline, in which case follow the Meister (Bill, that's you!) Cheers Nick

I have heard that we may be treated to a T2/4/8 which would be rather marvelous. Sod's Law says that a GR3 will follow......and a GR1 I suppose.
Nocoolname
Ooooo... if they were doing 'both' a GR 1 and 3 that would be awesome since they're two of the three other models in my planned Harrier line up that I want to add next (the other being the P117). I might drop Kinetic a note to see if they have any such plans. I mean, not doing them would be such a waste given all the effort they've put in on the SHAR toolings
