Plasto Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 (edited) Hi, Here is my attempt at a Spitfire XIVc. It uses the Fuselage of the recent Airfix Spitfire XIX and the wing of the recent Spitfire IXc. Exhausts are resin quick boost items and the cannon barrels are brass from Master. Decals from the xtradecal D Day sheet from last year. Painted with Tamiya Acrylics.. Thanks for looking Plasto.. Edited October 8, 2015 by Plasto 36
Matt_L Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 What a good idea, and what a good build! How did the wings/fuselage combine? Matt
PhantomBigStu Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 how did you pull it off given the dimension mismatch? That is stunning 1
Plasto Posted October 8, 2015 Author Posted October 8, 2015 Hi, Thanks for the kind words. Getting the wing to fit wasn't that tricky... I chopped off bits from the XIX wing and positioned carefully. It basically took a 6" steel rule a razor saw and a bit of milliput. The good thing is the bits left over can make a PR XI with a bit of Fettling... Cheers Plasto 4
PlaStix Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 That is a beautiful Spitfire. Looks more like 1/48. Very well done!
Rick Brown Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 Excellent, easy cross kit! Mine's still half done..... Rick.
Spitfire31 Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 Very smart looking Mk XIV there! My only gripe would be slightly over-emphasised 'panel lines', but that's strictly IMHO. Super modelling! Kind regards, Joachim
Roman Schilhart Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 Very nice, indeed. I've always liked the Spitfire's outlines. Great job on this conversion. I just realized all my Mk XIVs (Sword/AZ) are "e" wing, not "c".
wellsprop Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 I do like that! Love a good conversion and the Spitfire XIV Ben
Beard Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 That looks very nice indeed. I hope Airfix release a XIV soon.
VMA131Marine Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 Are the radiators the same size on the IX and the XIX kits? I've always heard that the Griffon engine aircraft needed bigger radiators than those with Merlins but I'm not sure if this is a myth. Or did you just use the XIX radiators on the IX wings?

Hi, The Griffon Rads from the XIX kit are deeper than the Merlin Rads from the IXc. IIRC the Griffon rads fitted to the IXc wing with no issues. Converting the XIX 'wet' wing to take the smaller Merlin rads requires that you chop off the moulded on alignment plugs its then a straightforward fit for the Merlin rads to fit the 'wet' wing. Here an underside shot of the XI conversion and the XIVc for illustrative purposes.. HTH Plasto 1
Meatbox8 Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 That's a great Spit XIV. I was thinking of doing this cross-kitting myself so seeing someone pull it off has definitely inspired me to try it. Plasto Posted October 9, 2015 Author Posted October 9, 2015 (edited) Hi, Glad you like the XI. The chin was relatively easy. I got a side profile of both a mk IX and a mk XI and scaled them to 1/72 that gave me a correct nose profile. I made a plastic card former of the correct profile and glued this to the centre line of the nose and then added milliput which I shaped to the correct profile. Here it is in construction the broader chord rudder and belly tank are from a Hasegawa mk VIII. Cheers Plasto Edited October 9, 2015 by Plasto
NPL Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 The way to do it. There was some months ago a conversion article based on the Airfix PR XIX in 1/48. It proposed using the wings from Hasegawa's Mk.IXs as substitutes, and said that there were few problems with the adaption. Then the author also had the basis of a PR Mk.XI conversion. I have no idea of how it would look using some extra wings from Eduard. The advantage with the Hasegawa option is that you cannot use the kit for anything else (and I have quite a few in my stash).
Meatbox8 Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 Thanks for the info regarding the chin. I also notice that you have underwing mounted camera blisters. Are those scratch built or after-market? On a side note it must have been odd for 91 squadron, flying Spits for the whole War, to go from the MkXII to the MKXIV, a sort of natural progression, to then to revert to the Merlin engined MkIX not long after D-Day and then to re-equip with the Mk21!
TEMPESTMK5 Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 Good afternoon Very good job you have done .. If only it could inspire the guys working with Airfix .. Patrice
Plasto Posted October 9, 2015 Author Posted October 9, 2015 Hi, Thanks for all the kind words. I also notice that you have underwing mounted camera blisters. Are those scratch built or after-market? The underwing camera blisters on the Mk XI are aftermarket, Pavla I think.. Cheers Plasto
