Airfix 1/72 Dassault Super Mystère B2 10 - SB EC 1/10 'Valois'

Recommended Posts

This is the continuation of my entry into the "French Fancy GB" - another project afflicted by my snail's pace build speed, and my other interests, :drink: .

Progress so far has been to start everything and finish nothing..

..fettling the l/h fuselage half; NACA ducts, nose profile, intake, tail area, fin shape, air brake shapes, gun troughs, u/c bays, etc,

..similar with the wings;

..the Renaissance etch set to improve some of the detail,

..tailplanes,

..nose u/c bay,

References include some old copies of Fanatique de l'Aviation, photos from around the net, and the excellent photo reference on the Renaissance-Models website. Decals will be coming from the Berna sheet, BD 72-53. I've also cribbed some ideas from others' builds on the net and so on.

Still plenty to do, and should keep me out of trouble for the foreseeable future - thanks for looking in..

Great plane! And very involved build! It looks promisingly exciting!

I have my eyes on two of this kit I have sourced in South Africa, but I am quietly hoping Airfix will issue a new tool kit of the SMB2. Nothing wrong in dreaming....

The amount of work to bring this kit to decent standards looks rather scary... but so tempting!

Good luck

JR

Thanks for the interest in this one - I think the chances of Airfix releasing an update are remote, but who knows these days?

Anyway, just starting to get back into this, starting with addition of some ballast in the nose, whilst at the same time trying to create a decent intake shape...

My first attempt at creating the cannon troughs in filler was a bit flaky, literally, as the filler wouldn't hold its shape whilst being worked. Plan B was to use some 1.1mm internal diameter brass tube, and file to shape..

Got fed up of looking at the Airfix silver plastic, which makes it a little difficult to see where you are going shape wise , and so I gave one half of the fuselage a squirt of Halford's finest..

And whilst that was drying, started on the Falcon Vax canopy which had a very variable frame shape on it - so it got the file treatment. It needs some internal framework anyway. Hopefully it will polish up ok, if not it can be used to create a master for crash moulding.

Thanks Gene - I am finding it an interesting build, more involved than I thought it would be, but plenty of fun all the same.

Minor progress - starting on the starboard fuselage to mimic the work done on port. Reshaping jet pipe area,

..checking fuselage length matches the Berna decals flash,

22968411952_6dd30065f9_c.jpg

..trying to polish up the windshield. I am struggling to get this to the right shape without making the plastic too thin, so might have to use this to create a male former for some crash moulding,

22563512668_a1745770e7_c.jpg

..still refining the tailplanes, and have created some new plates for the joint with the fuselage. The rudder and aileron are being tidied up as well..

22359070724_ee4304a84f_c.jpg

..and moving toward a more realistic nose profile, and adding a bit of depth to the fuselage around the wing leading edge area to match photos and drawings,

22955813436_b75d1370ca_c.jpg

..one of the issues with the kit is that the port and starboard pieces don't match shape in a few areas. Here the spine is being built up on the port side, and at the same time the recess for the canopy-opening mechanism is being cut out. The small hole is for an access panel included on the Renaissance etch sheet. Also, the port cockpit wall has been thinned down, ready to be built up again to take the canopy closing mechanism.

cheers, and thanks for looking in.
