Kallisti Posted October 2, 2015 Posted October 2, 2015 (edited) I built this back in Jan/Feb of this year but never took any photos, build thread or even and RFI up to now! So here are some photos from the IPMS Farnborough website... This is another entry in my project associated with my Father in the RAF, namely building the aircraft that were in 5 Sqn before and after he was attached to that squadron while in Burma in 1943-45 Previously I've built a Curtis Mohawk which was flown by 5 Sqn from 1941 to 43 and a F6 English Electric Lightning that was flown by 5 Sqn in the 70 up to the mid 80s. This brings the story further into the modern era as 5 Sqn flew the F3 Tornado from 1987 to 2003 Larger pic here Larger pic here Larger pic here Larger pic here This was the Italeri kit plus the Eduard PE with 5 Sqn decals sourced from elsewhere - I can't honestly remember where. The pilot figures are from PJ Productions - its the same figure but modified for front and back seat One of the reasons I do build threads on here is so I remember what I've done! PhantomBigStu Posted October 2, 2015 Posted October 2, 2015 Superb, interesting the white tanks, assuming theres a story behind them?
Kallisti Posted October 2, 2015 Author Posted October 2, 2015 Nice work. It that the 48th scale kit? Yes, as for white tanks - I did have some photos references with white tanks and thought they look a bit different...
mcdonnell Posted October 2, 2015 Posted October 2, 2015 Hello,Kallisti -.Congratulations on a beautiful build of your 'F3 Tornado.' I love the level of detail and quality of the finish.Very smart indeed. All the best,Paul.
AnonymousAA72 Posted October 2, 2015 Posted October 2, 2015 Yes, as for white tanks - I did have some photos references with white tanks and thought they look a bit different... Interesting. Are they the larger " hindenburgers?". If so you have the fins on back to front...But nicely done otherwise, looks very nice.
Kes Posted October 2, 2015 Posted October 2, 2015 I remember this flying out of Coningsby, great build, very nice! . . . Kes (who doesn't think is has 'Hindenburger' tanks?)
Kallisti Posted October 3, 2015 Author Posted October 3, 2015 The tanks have been built as per the kit instructions, so any mistakes are theirs not mine 1
F-32 Posted October 3, 2015 Posted October 3, 2015 Lovely build, always liked the 5 Sqn scheme on the F.3
mtd350 Posted October 3, 2015 Posted October 3, 2015 (edited) Cracking build.............................but.......(and I'm not criticizing your build) .why did Italeri put the top fins on the Mike tanks. Never ever seen them in use in over 25 years of working with F3's on a British kite, not even the GR's. Maybe the prototype or F2?. I'd be interested to be pointed in the direction of any proof. exdraken Posted October 3, 2015 Posted October 3, 2015 very nice! well done! I quite like the Italeri F3 kit
AnonymousAA72 Posted October 3, 2015 Posted October 3, 2015 I remember this flying out of Coningsby, great build, very nice! . . . Kes (who doesn't think is has 'Hindenburger' tanks?) I think you're right Kes, they're the normal standard tanks, with additional upper fins! And that's how the kit instructions tell you to do them? Pity....
Selwyn Posted October 3, 2015 Posted October 3, 2015 Nice tornado All your missiles should be grey though! Selwyn
AirfixAndy Posted October 4, 2015 Posted October 4, 2015 Lovely build ....the early 5 Sqn markings are the best looking F3s IMHO. Andy
Kallisti Posted January 1, 2016 Author Posted January 1, 2016 Nice tornado All your missiles should be grey though! Selwyn Hehe, you can tell I'm not a modern jet expert... I just followed the kit instructions and there are obviously mistakes in there. Never mind, maybe next time I build a modern jet kit I may get closer to the real things...
