KG76 Dornier 17z - Revell 1/72

Recommended Posts

Thanks guys!

Not a lot of progress tonight due to work getting in the way, however I did manage to get a gloss coat on the interior ahead of the pin wash that was supposed to go on tonight.

I did also manage to get the clear bits masked using the Eduard masking set. I'm so glad I bought this set, as the thought of masking all that glassware without does not appeal.

I'll try and post some pics tomorrow.

As promised a picture of the masked clear bits.

IMG_20151010_203623.jpg

Not very exciting, but much easier with the Eduard set.

Next up was applying the oil wash to the interior.

IMG_20151010_215640.jpg

The photo is a bit glary, but the wash looks better in person.

Again I'll let this lot dry off overnight before I apply a matt coat tomorrow, after which I can join the fuselage halves together.

In between putting up a mirror in the downstairs loo, and going out to Bicester airfield to see the Vulcan fly past, I've managed to get some more done on the Dornier.

First up was sorting out the oil wash and applying a coat of Gunze matt varnish.

IMG_20151011_203241.jpg

The harness buckles all got a touch of Titan Silver after the matt coat, and overall I'm quite pleased with the overall effect, as it looks relatively busy, with a bit of depth and shadow.

With that out of the way, it was time to put the fuselage halves together, which like much of this kit actually fit together rather well.

IMG_20151011_203133.jpg

It'll need a bit of filler at the front of the cockpit and under the bombay where there's a short shot where the stand would go. This was backed with plastic card ahead of the filler going on.

IMG_20151011_203154.jpg

With the fuselage closed up, I now need to think about the canopy, as this will have to include the various guns poking out both top and bottom.

I'm no fan of fitting canopies after painting, as unless they are a perfect fit, they can end up looking like an after thought,so I will be fitting the guns at the same time as the canopy.

But won't you keep knocking them off? Almost certainly considering what I did to the Blenheim Mk IVF last night!

So I'm going to install the guns but not the barrels, which has meant making some changes to the guns.

IMG_20151011_203035.jpg

I've therefore cut off the barrels and drilled out the magazine saddle to take a short length of brass tubing into which the barrel will fit at the end of the build.

Thanks guys!

I've managed to start the week with a disaster as I dropped the Dornier's fuselage on the floor yesterday, which did no damage to the plastic, but caused the bulk of the PE installed in the cockpit to pop loose!

IMG_20151013_090955.jpg

IMG_20151013_192922.jpg

Rhymes with 'clucking bell'!

After turning the air blue for a few minutes I sat down and took stock, and all things considered, no major harm done, and it can all go back in before I close up the pit.

The side window under the wing is a poor fit, protruding a good 1mm proud of the fuselage, so it was filled around the edges with MrSurfacer, and then sanded back and polished.

IMG_20151013_192931.jpg

The tail plane is now attached, following a little shim work to close a slight gap at the front and underneath.

IMG_20151014_212934.jpg

Next up was the wing which also needed a little shim work to get it to fit perfectly.

IMG_20151014_212957.jpg

The shim on the lower part of the wing root has already been sanded down, and closes up the gap under the wing nicely. The one on top of the root will be left to dry off overnight before I sand it down.

The front of the wing itself also got a little shim.

IMG_20151014_213035_2.jpg

Time for some of my favourite tools!

IMG_20151014_213057_2.jpg

I didn't intend to recribe this build, but having started rescribing some of the lost panel line detail on the fuselage, I kept on going and rescribed the whole fuselage.

IMG_20151014_212909.jpg

IMG_20151014_212924_1.jpg

At this point I'd run out of Dymo tape, but Mrs Bordfunker rather helpfully picked up some for me today, hence the very new roll in the picture.

Which allowed me to start on the top of the wing.

IMG_20151014_213011_1.jpg

IMG_20151014_213020.jpg

That's enough scribing for one night, I'm going cross eyed looking at the very fine panel lines!

Hi Karl,

It's always a bummer when stuff like that happens. I feel for you :(

Difficult as it is, it's indeed best to grant yourself a bit of a break, then rationally think it through and start again. Good to see that no PE was broken or dramatically bent.

Nice rescribing work, by the way.

I'm not sure dropping it is 'very professional' but I'll take the compliment!

I think I've just about finished the rescribe having corrected a few slips that I made in the process with CA and sanding.

I have done a little more work on the guns ahead of painting them.

IMG_20151017_220424.jpg

I've used some of the etch from the PE set, and simply wrapped it around the lump of plastic that passes for the ammo can on the kit guns.

It's not perfect, but should look fine behind the canopy.

Speaking of clear bits, focus has now shifted to fine tuning the fit of the clear components, particularly the front insert that sits on the starboard side, and the under fuselage gun position.

IMG_20151017_220220.jpg

The forward section has required a bit of shimming to improve the fit, however it's still leaving a step with one portion of the fuselage, so I've applied some thin strips of plastic card and MrSurfacer to bring it all level.

IMG_20151017_220211.jpg

As per usual that lot can be left to set overnight.

Next up was the under carriage, which as per usual I built up before painting. I've also added the resin wheels to check they would fit, which they obviously do.

IMG_20151017_220305.jpg

I'll need to add supports between the bottom of the mudguards and the base of the landing gear struts, but I'll do these nearer the end of the build, as I'll only break them otherwise.

IMG_20151017_220317.jpg

However adding brake lines will be on the agenda tomorrow.

On trawling through the spares box in search of something else I found this 20mm cannon from a Hasegawa He111, which looks nicer than the one I found earlier.

IMG_20151017_220351.jpg

Now having done some more research I've realised that the mounting point for the 20 is different to the MG,coming out through the small triangular window at the vase of the front glazing.

Easy enough to drill a hole, but leaves me with the issue of the other hole in the canopy for the MG?

Something to ponder overnight.

Still haven't decided what to do about the front 20mm, but I did start adding some of the glazing, starting with the lower gun position.

IMG_20151020_203737.jpg

I haven't fitted the gun yet, I'll leave that until I've got the interior in.

After what seems an age I've finally got around to attaching wings, which thanks to all the shimming and preparatory work went on without a hitch.

IMG_20151020_203654.jpg

The jars are acting as weights to hold the wing at the correct dihedral, and will be left in place overnight.

Not a lot of progress, but it's starting to get there.

Hard to believe this is the old Revell kit, looking forward to seeing some paint on her.

You wait till you see the pictures of the front starboard glazing! That has taken a lot fettling to get it to fit nicely.

Here's the front of the Dornier where the starboard glazing insert goes.

IMG_20151022_185352.jpg

All the white that you can see shims of plastic card added to improve the fit.

IMG_20151022_185400.jpg

With all the shimming and tweaking completed, I could put the cockpit interior back in.

IMG_20151022_193314.jpg

Thankfully everything went back in without any real issues, just lashings of CA!

IMG_20151022_193326.jpg

With the pit in, it was time to add the guns to the main cockpit canopy.

IMG_20151022_193350.jpg

These were stuck in using Gatorgrip glue, as I couldn't remember if I'd dipped the canopies or not, and thus steered away from CA.

That lot can set overnight, then tomorrow I'll pop the lid on, and insert the side glazing.

.....the fit must have been pretty terrible without them.

You're not wrong there!

Realised this morning that I had forgotten to add the gunner's seat at rear of the cockpit.

IMG_20151023_075650.jpg

I managed to snap off one of the legs from gunner's seat, but stuck it in anyway as it's barely visible with the lid off, let alone with the fairly thick Revell canopy on.

IMG_20151023_075703.jpg

I'm fairly satisfied with the pit, as it now looks suitably busy and crowded just like the real thing, particularly when viewed from the front.

IMG_20151023_075718.jpg

I'm not going to fit the front canopy piece until late in the build, as it will allow me access to the interior just in case I drop it again!

This was the side glazing after a coat of MrSurfacer, overall the shims have worked pretty well in sorting out the fit.

IMG_20151023_075755.jpg

Here it is with the lid on, all glued in place and the edges of the canopy faired in with MrSurfacer 1000. Unlike the side glazing the canopy fits like a glove, and just needs a little blending.

IMG_20151023_123922.jpg

Here's the underside, with the side glazing cleaned up, and the small bulge for the bomb sight added.

IMG_20151023_123944.jpg

Just need to clean up the MrSurfacer around the edges of the canopy, clean the airframe up, and then it's into the paint shop for a squirt of primer.

Thanks Joe.

Primer time!

IMG_20151023_224449.jpg

Can you guess where I was holding the model?

IMG_20151023_224502.jpg

Overall not too bad considering the amount of mucking about I've done with this kit, however a couple areas look a little rough.

IMG_20151023_224513.jpg

I'm not surprised about the cowling needing further work as it got a lot of attention.

More primer in the morning, and then I'll start sorting out the rough bits.

The rough bits have now been sorted out as best I can in the time available, and everything got another coat of primer followed by a panel shade.

IMG_20151025_211509.jpg

I'm having to use my other airbrush at the moment, it's also a Badger 100, but a G with a medium head, hence the heavier than normal pre-shade.

IMG_20151025_211525.jpg

This is what I'm aiming for, second from the top.

IMG_20151025_211642.jpg

And then time to start applying the RLM65.

IMG_20151025_214352.jpg

IMG_20151025_214341.jpg

The centres of all the panels have been hit with a random scribble of RLM76, after which I then sprayed it all again with a thinned coat of RLM 65.

IMG_20151025_214347.jpg

Still not a 100% happy with that side glazing, but it have to do.

IMG_20151025_214404.jpg

Doubt I'll get much done tomorrow as I'm off to see Spectre.

Spectre was very good and highly recommended.

However given that Monday was spent at the movies, and tomorrow night I'm on a company night out, I can guarantee the Dornier won't be completed for this GB unfortunately.

I'm still making progress and its all masked up ready to start painting the 70/71 topside camo.
