PaulR
Eveninng all, As per the topic really; a bit lost off with all the wildcat variants! What would be the equivalent FAA mark for the new Airfix wildcat, and what modifications would need to be made to make other variants? Cheers for any guidance! ClaudioN
Hello Paul, you can find a rather extensive discussion within this thread: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234988152-airfix-nakajima-b5n2-kate-grumman-wildcat-f4f4-dogfight-double/ The easiest mod is F4F-4 to Martlet/Wildcat Mk. Greenshirt
The second easiest is the Mk II. From other F4F-4 kits I've done both a V and a II and was quite happy with the results. Tim
Truro Model Builder
F4F-4 to Wildcat Mk.IV (FM-1) can be done without too much difficulty.
Greenshirt
F4F-4 to Wildcat Mk.IV (FM-1) can be done without too much difficulty.FM-1 = Wildcat VMartlet IV had the single row Cyclone engine, so cowl was shorter and had different details. But overall length remained same so firewall must be moved forward. Martlet IV would be a bit of effort. Dave Fleming
Martlet II and V are all relatively easy, mk III a little more involved (especially as there were two different styles)
Seawinder
Or (heresy!) you could even build it as a USN F4F-4. Edited September 24, 2015 by Seawinder

DaveCromie
Or (heresy!) you could even build it as a USN F4F-4. Do what? Why would anyone want to build a USN aircraft that comes in a box with all the bits and markings needed to do so when they could spend ages researching the various mods required to build an FAA variant, tracking down the decals needed and then discussing whether their choice of airframe was painted in Du Pont or MAP paints? What a silly idea! Cheers DC still waiting for pay day so I can go and buy one of these to build as an FAA example..what's that you say? The Glasgow show falls on pay day? What a happy coincidence! Might just have to buy a couple now!

Greenshirt
Cheers chaps! Mk v it is... now to find decals! If you can find the old Frog decals it has JV429/8N of 881 Squadron. http://greenshirt-modeler.blogspot.com/2012/07/a-pair-of-wildcats.html Is my conversion from the Academy kit and one I want to redo using a better kit. The simple answer to your question is none. But with some simple mods either the Mk.II (AJxxx series) or a Mk.V can be done. For the MK.II remove the carb and intercooler scoops and scribe in only one cowl flap. For the Mk.V remove the outer gun in each wing.
