Airfix 1/48 Gloster Javelin FAW.9R No.64 SQDN Singapore 1960s

Good morning everyone

After such a fantastic day at my home model show on Saturday 12th walking away with 4 slivers and a gold in the Aircraft class 1 category I've already started to think what to enter next year.

After a good look around all the stands and completion entries this year I did notice there was one aircraft missing from the stands which to be honest I would have loved to see and I'm sure others would have too.

So since I had this subject in the stash already it has now found it's way from the stash to the workbench. The Airfix 1/48 Javelin FAW.9R.

Looking through the options on the provided decal sheets the stand out one for me was 64 sqdn based in Tengah Singapore during the 1960s.

I have had quite a few holidays in Singapore during my life time as my grandfather was based in Tengah and Chani during his RAF career. Since he took his family to Singapore including my mother she enjoyed it so much that she went back annually from the mid 80s and started to take me with her up until my 18th b'day. So I have fond memories of Singapore.

I have the Eduard interior, masks on the way in the post along with the master pitot tubes as the kit ones are extremely fragile and already snapped in the packaging one I opened the kit.

Not too much stencil data, just a few here and there, What have I let myself into?

Now the first thing i've decided to do is remove the stall warning vane on the wings just above the vortex generators, which I will thin a little. I've heard and seen so much issue with the roundel decals breaking and cracking here. I've kept the removed parts, should I decide to attached them at a later stage, but to be honest, I've seen a couple of builds online without them attached and you wouldn't notice unless you went looking for them.

So, with the cockpit interior on the way, best way to start the kit was to work on some sub assemblies that could be built while waiting, so first using eduard's online instructions for the etched set, I sanded down the areas that required removing and gave some cockpit areas a coat of paint.

I also just did a dry fit of some of the parts, which look great, it isn't as big as I first thought

So after this, I've built the tail and started the wings including some paint for the undercarriage bay

I'm sure there is many modelers like me, but I can't really understand the point of moving flap and slats, for a model that will remain stationary in a display cabinet surely you would glue them into the position you would like them in. Unless your a youngster that built the model and decide to run around the garden or living room with the plane in hand pretending to fly, making airplane noises and moving the flaps up and down as you turn, (but I could imagine some adults might still do it)

I thought we all did that! :banghead:

Oooh! Really looking forward to this! My dad was on 60 and then 64 at Tengah flying the Mk9! 64 Sqn, IIRC was the largest fighter squadron in the RAF at one time, so plenty of airframes to choose from! They also had some T3s - now they would look good in 1:48! Hmmm!

Ok ladies and chaps, I've made quite a deal of progress over the weekend on this, along with helping my daughter make her first kit in between sessions.

Cockpit is all done, with add the seat once painting it complete

intakes all done as well

Also watching this closely. There were a lot of ex-Javelin aircrew in civil air traffic control in the late '60s and I worked with several of them including some who were in Singapore.

You've made a really good start, I don't know why I still don't have one of these in my stash.

I have a small issue with painting, the kit had a bath of warm soapy water before it hit the workbench but some issues with paint setting in some areas, I wiped the paint away gave it a sand and then the paint set on the kit, any idea why it would do this, paint is all thinned correctly

Hi peeps

Well, been getting somewhere over the weekend and this is where I am. Underside all have their high speed silver painted and dark sea gray on the upper surface, then it is time to mask the camo, the joy of this part

getting there now

DSC_2685_zpse8bn5fps.jpg

And painted and the unmasking results

I've chosen to attach the tail as the final stage to assist with the decal stage, I have some feeling that the fin flash decal is too big

More updates for the Javelin, progressing very quickly, tail already has gloss cote ready for decals and will be glossing down the fuselage tonight, leaving it to dry for a decaling session on Saturday. Really fun and quick build this is turning out to be.

Another update here, I'm posting updates quicker than I'm getting comment, It is really going that fast.

So gloss is on, and no gradually adding the decals, I really love the decal stage as it starts to take more form and colour.

As above it certainly is coming to life now the decals are going on , May I ask how you found the overall fit of the parts ?

The fit is generally good, wing joint needs careful glueing. Hardest parts for me was the engine exhaust which was the only poor fitting part to deal with

So everyone. I am very close to the finishing line now.

I've painted the canopy now, and just test fitting everything below, to check the fit, as i'm leaving the canopy open to show off the pit.

DSC_2710_zpsananwfxf.jpg

It is really starting to look the part now, I've now sealed in the decals with semi gloss tamiya X-35 and all I need to do is add the 4 fire-streak missiles, the aftermarket pitot tubes and the canopy and we are done.

DSC_2713_zpsnzzdh7kx.jpg

Really looking forward to getting this one finished and I have really surprised myself on how quick this build has been, since it was started just 3 weeks and 2 days ago.

To give an idea of how much modelling time I get, I'm a full time working father of 2 young girls, how on earth do I get the time?

and more updated this morning as I had a little more time.

Pitot tubes, ejection seats and canopy added. Just need to deal with a couple of silvered decals that I missed until after the final cote went on, I have a little weathering technique I use to deal with these, so many tiny decals and can't believe I didn't notice them.

DSC_2716_zpsfrgwatj3.jpg

Just the pylons and firestreaks to add, and a small amount of weathering, I built the ladder and painted the FOD covers just in case I decide to add them.
