Eduard 1/48 Mig-21PFM **FINISHED**

Now that I've managed to get two builds finished in the last few weeks it's on with the next, some more Soviet hardware in the form of Eduard's PFM Fishbed. I have their MF in the stash too and thought about doing a double build but decided against it as I couldn't make my mind up about what colour scheme to do it in.

So this is going to be out the box (Profipack boxing) and will be finished as a Czech Air Force airframe in natural metal.

Made a start on the cockpit and undercarriage bays.

Cockpit painted with Akans Emerald Green, it's not a perfect match for the kit PE but it's close enough for me. The side consoles have been added to the fuselage sides as this will hopefully aid the placement of the PE.

Quite a bit of pogress done.............

Shock cone and exhaust in place ready to close the fuselage. Not much will be seen of the afterburner area so not too concerned about it.

The spine and fin are separate parts but the join to the fuselage is flawless.

Another update of progress so far.................

I've decided to drop the airbrakes as quite a few photo's show the aircraft parked with them sitting open. With the Eduard kit this involves cutting two holes in the lower fuselage just below the wing root to allow the parts for the airbrake interior to be added.

One done, one to go.......

Both done and managed to not destroy any detail!

The airbrake interiors were then added no problem and the main undercarriage bay was added to the lower wing section. small amount of filler was required at the airbrake housing to fill some gaps but as this is at the hinged end it should be pretty much hidden.

Got the upper wings on and quite a few other pieces added to the fuselage, airframes basically as complete as it will be for painting, thinking about adding some rivets to the rudder and tailplanes.

I had a 1 mm gap along the front fuselage join no doubt down to me rather than the kit, filled with some Evergreen strip and finished off with Mr Surfacer.

The first paint on with the cockpit colour around the canopy followed by a gloss black primer, bought Alclads gloss black primer as I like their grey stuff. First impressions of Alclads black primer is not that great goes on smoothly like the grey stuff but there's not much 'gloss' about, get better results and more gloss with good old Tamiya X-1, I'll see how it goes.

I've been working away at this and got the NMF on, not really that happy with how it went but hey ho, started of with Alclads Airframe Aluminium which started going on fine but then ended up having a sort of white frosted effect, not sure if I tried to put too much paint down or if the bottle is off, had to go over it with Dark Aluminium which solved the problem but kind of dented my enthusiasm/confidence in working with Alclads. As a result I'm not going for as big a patchwork effect on the panels and have just done a couple in Dull Aluminium. Not sure whats going on with Photobucket either as it won't let me crop photo's without doing strange things to them!

I then weathered a little with Tamiya's Smoke and applied a gloss coat of Alclads Aqua Gloss which did go on well as always. I've started the decals and this where I'm at.....

Nice job!

I hate to be picky, but you've left off the landing lights..........they are added from inside the wing, and there is a painting mask for them.

I'm part way through an MF........it's a better fitting kit than their Spitfire, the only issue I have with them is the surgery required for dropped speed brakes. A total pain IMHO.

This is looking really good, it's a lovely kit (with the exception of the PITA airbrakes as mentioned) a good choice for a metal finish.

The high shine Alclads take some getting used to, the frosty effect you mention is likely due to too much paint being applied in one area. They rely on the shine of the underlying paint and you only need a very fine covering to give the metallic effect. They are fantastic once you get them right.

As mentioned the finish on these should be matt or satin anyway as the finish on the real thing is varnish mixed with aluminium powder not an uncoated metal, so in actual fact your powder finish is probably perfect!

If you want some subtle panel variations you could always try some oil filters after you've varnish coated, much quicker than masking and spraying various shades.

Keep up the good work!

But do not forget that the result must be matt!

I wasn't sure what I was going to finish it in, the gloss coat at the moment is just for the decals and I knew it was looking too shiny for the final finish. Matt might be to matt at this scale so I'll maybe see how semi-Matt looks first.

Nice job!

Well spotted, as you can see I only realised this after the wings were together, was pretty annoyed with myself. Hoping to fill them with Kristal Klear at the end of the build.

This looks lovely. Really nice job. Noob question: what are those little blue and black dots inside the wings?

My understanding is there gas bottles for the various systems, the different colours for the different contents, oxygen, nitrogen etc

Here's where I'm up to, still getting through large amount of stencils that need applying. I decided to mask off a few panels and add some different shades.

I've tried out an oil wash on an old kit which has worked quite well so will crack on with that after the stencils.
