When they came to Brize for a bombing comp, B52D's in 81 or 82 and B52Hs (and one 52D) in 83 or 84, I used to go to the point they lifted off the runway. Noise, smoke and it was unbelievable, never to be forgotten. They took over an hour from the 1st engine start to lift off. Took them an age and escorted by truck, same for the return to Brize.Met at the runway's end by the truck to the pan, usually 16,17 & 18. Brize Norton's taxiways were widened for the B36 and/or B52s back in the 50s,they don't do QRAs with the 52,thats for sure.

They should have treated a bombing competion like the real thing ,I would have thought so anyway. Those MITO guy's wives must have been in Norwich !

Thanks all.

They go pretty quickly on an Alert Response with MITO.

Impressive Video. They look like such awkward things taking off!

Dave, any chance of a photo with this next to the B-1B?

Cheers,

Si

Once I get a bit more done, I'll get a picture for you mate.

Just caught up on this build....like it a lot!

Dermot

Cheers Dermot.

Some more progress to show. Spent 3.5 hours working on the wings today and they're just about done. First up I had to sand away the filler that was used to remove the sink marks, then i moved on and smoothed off all the edges. Once that was sorted, I added the fuel tanks, pylons and engines, all of which involved some filling and sanding. Once they were fitted, i filled in the gaps with Revell Contacta glue:

My initial plan was to paint these separate from the fuselage, but having dry fitted them, i think it's best i attach them first as there'll be some clean up on the joins required. I also assembled the 24 M117 bombs (what a pain this was!):

Spent a further 2 hours sanding and cleaning up the filler on the underside of the fuselage. Glad to say it's all done:

Next up is to tidy up the filler on the upper fuselage and around the windshield.

More soon.

Looking good so far.

Are you going to have any trouble painting around the engines with them attached?

Cheers. I shouldn't think so, though if i decide to attach the wings to the fuselage before painting it will certainly be tricky due to the size.

Not really an update (all i've done is add the filler around the windshield) but I did take a few comparison pictures of the B-52 beside my 1/48 B-1B (note the wings are just dry fitted):

With a 1/48 F-16 in the middle:

And with one of it's predecessors, 1/48 B-17G:

More actual progress soon.

I remember from the kit I made in my teens, I think I used masking tape over the wing roots to cover the gap (this was long before I discovered filler!). It didn't look too bad, honest!

In all honesty I don't have the space for one. My LHS has a few smaller scale versions that I think I can get away with for now. I'd like to do a B52 and Vulcan in 1/144 as a Cold War tribute pair.

I remember being at Boscombe Down for a air show as a kid and seeing one of these taking off. Took it's time and there was a horrific cloud of black exhaust as she trundled along, but what a noise! The B-1 and Vulcan were just as impressive :)
