bbudde
Great work so far. Beautiful. Follow this one with great interest, although really not my scale. But I can watch out for the lovely details for my 1:72 ones ( Revell-Hase/ Airfix). Cheers

FG2Si
Thanks everyone. Matt, I think if the HK kit had come out just a bit sooner, people might have been more impressed by it. I like their approach and have been happy building it. I started work on the nose guns and cannon for the Tamiya kit. I painted them Tamiya dark iron and then a coat of clear smoke mixed with clear blue. This was a bit of an experiment on my part. I'm happy with the results. Forgot to take a pic earlier so here's one belatedly: Here are the 20mm cannon: The ammo boxes and cradle: Here are the ammo chutes, heating ducts, and bomb cradle ready for another coat of aluminum paint. The assembled cannon mounts: Edited August 27, 2015 by FG2Si
FG2Si
I didn't take any pics of the next party which was the installation of both main wings. Probably because both went without a hitch. Which resulted in my workbench looking like this: I had to clear some space as I was running out fast. Carl

Telboy1999
Stunning work all round, lovely build and paintwork, although I too think you're mental for doing two such massive kits at once but kudos to you! Great pics, thank you, and since I have the Tamiya kit in the stash and am itching to get started on it, I'll be following this thread with great interest! FG2Si
Hi everyone! I haven't made much progress lately as we were on a vacation for a week. During our trip, our 4 year old unintentionally punched me in my right eye. As a result, I have a PVD (posterior vitreous detachment) injury and won't be at the workbench for a bit. Thankfully it wasn't worse, so barring me blowing my nose too hard or getting hit in the eye again in the next 5 seeks, I should OK. Meantime, it's great to see all the Mossie builds on here. Hopefully, I'll be back soon with some actual progress to report. Carl
TGA
That's pretty bad Carl. Hopefully you'll have a speedy recovery! Looking forward to seeing you back at work!
FG2Si
I'm finally back at the workbench. It's been just over 6 weeks since my injury so everything should be fine now ( I hope). I fitted the trumpet exhausts from the Tamiya kit to the HK engines. These are a bit longer than the HK exhausts so they don't line up with the ports on the engine. The mis-alignment won't be seen with the cowlings in place so I wasn't worried. I had to use a couple clamps to get the cowl panels on tightly. I'm fairly certain this was operator error as they lined up fine earlier.
FG2Si
Going back a step on the HK kit, the small intakes that are just below the exhaust openings are moulded solid. Since the Tamiya kit had the bonus clear cowl set, I used the separate intakes to replace the ones on the HK kit. I then started attaching the transparencies to the fuselage, starting with the nose cone and side windows. I used the Makater mask set to mask them off for paint. I then turned my attention to the canopy. After masking them off, I gave them a coat of interior green. I then assembled the overhead bracing with the front and rear sections. With the flare gun in place: This was then glued to the fuselage. Lastly, the top and side panels were added. These were a press fit in so no glue was needed. TGA
Welcome back Sir! I was hoping to see more of this double build so I'm glad you are doing well enough to actually start again!
FG2Si
Thanks TGA!, It feels good getting back to the bench. It's been quite the stress relief. Although I found out I now need reading glasses... Back to the HK Mossie, I sprayed the green using Tamiya Dark Green. This was done freehand. I then did the Ocean Grey, again using Tamiya paint. Since I had leftover paint in the airbrush, I did a bit of pre-shading on the Tamiya Mossie to use up what was left. According to the Aviaeology decal instructions, the Extra Dark Sea Grey was oversprayed in a very thin coat on top of the original Dark Green and Ocean Grey so hopefully this will replicate that. FG2Si
Here's the HK Mossie with the upper camo colours done. I then masked it off to spray the Night for the sides and lower sections. I used Tamiya semi gloss black. With all the masking removed: There's a couple of places that need some minor touch up and then I can start on the markings. TGA
So do you still think the Tamiya Mossie is the better of the two models?
FG2Si
So do you still think the Tamiya Mossie is the better of the two models? At this point, I'd have to say yes it's the better of the two kits. The detail is quite a bit nicer. You really don't need any AM for it. The refinement is also a step or two above. I think the HK kit is fine, the only real let down being the engines but if you close them up, it's an non issue. I'm glad to have had the chance to see two different executions on the same subject (more or less). If the HK kit was about $75 less, then it's much more viable as an option. Their biggest problem was having Tamiya steal their thunder and come out at roughly the same time and price point. Carl

spruecutter96
The Mossie would easily make it into my "Top Three Aircraft Of All Time" list! Your building and painting skills are amazing, my friend. I will be watching this one progress with a lot of interest. Thanks for sharing so comprehensively with us. Chris.
