Building a HAS

Oh and here is Sally B from the Clacton air show a few years back.  I don’t know how many times I have seen her over the years but she is always a pleasure to watch

Yum. Contra-rotating props. What's not to like?

Herc looks nearly finished. Have you really given up on that ramp? :wicked:

No Herc hasn’t progressed much at all - it’s just masking taped up.  Only a couple of bits have glue on them.  So the ramp.  It’s probably doable but it would require fine cotton or fishing line linked to two separate moving ramps (top & bottom) that are linked to an actuator / linear screw thread.  All of which would be sealed inside body so any breaks won’t be fixable.  And the hinge points on both ramps would need reworking as the kits hinges look at best weak.  I am tempted to fit a ‘hand of god’ string to manually operate the ramp, but if that failed it wouldn’t be a great loss.  So not fully given up but not really convinced that it will reliably work either!

Little bit of time on the Herc cockpit today.  Surprisingly detailed considering most of it is hidden away.  The plan is to fit a light behind the panels either side and one under the centre consul.  They should give something similar to ambient instrument lighting for the cockpit.  Don’t want it super bright in there.  So I am putting silver foil behind the parts of the panel I don’t want to light up.  And the panels will get a card backing once I have fitted the leds.  Would love to get some of these seats for future scratch build projects.  Almost tempting to try resin casting a copy to store away

Might even get some paint in there this week.  Testing it all fits inside

Think I am getting there with the silver foil lined light up cabinets.   Have built backs to them so that light won’t bleed out of the back.  So test fitting of some bulbs to see how it might look.  Three bulbs in the cab

So test fitting it inside.  The bulbs need rewriting up & I will have to see how paint will limit light coming through.  As long as it doesn’t shine through the aircraft skin. That would look plain daft

Think that might give the cockpit its instrument glow lighting

Hmm, the Herc is going to take over so think it’s time to have its own build thread.  Nearly picked up a truck to convert in to another tanker, but that didn’t come off.  Really fancy one like this one day

Not really seen anything to start from though in 1/48 or 1/50 but this is out there

Well that’s a challenge for another day.  And finishing off the control tower.

Just watched the really rather awful Wonder Woman movie and was wondering why there were HAS structures in 1918.  Then found out they filmed WW1 scenes at Upper Heyford.  Ok......

Not been getting much of anything done lately.  The Herc makes agonisingly slow progress.  But I asked the nice man at Sanger for the AEW parts for the Shack, so waiting on them.  Now contra rotating powered props.....

Picked up a new airfield vehicle today.  1985 Vauxhall Astra.  It is currently a police car but trying to work out what would be right on a mid 80s RAF station.  I know a black Chevette would look at home, but trying to see what colour, any signage etc

Mid 80's RAF Police would be an Escort estate. Also Metro's or Chevette estates (all black) were in use. Or Sherpa's but usually green.

And of course all sorts of Land Rovers. LWB or Lightweight (Para Rovers). Senior Officers cars were Cavaliers (black) BMC 1800's RAF Blue. (Late 70's to early 80's.)

I think Montego's replaced them. Saloon or estate versions. That's not to say that Astra's weren't used, but I can't remember seeing any.

Cheers @Pete in Lincs was trying to figure out what & when.  I grew up in a garrison town so black chevettes were pretty common.  I have a Landrover in RAF scheme, but 1/43 / 1/48 / 1/50 Sherpas are a bit pricey if all you want to do is repaint them.  There is one in a set of 007 vehicles (For Your Eyes Only?  Driven by Jaws) but they only seem to turn up mint in box.  I would be quite happy to find one with no box & bits missing.  A Cavalier or Mk 3 Escort may be doable but I am not paying £20.  Might keep the Astra as RAF Police as it has a roof light, or fill that in & repaint black.  Surely no one makes a Montego.  My mates dad had one that we all used to pile in.  I had the mk3 Escort with lots of rust

Had a box from Sanger this week.  Gerald has kindly sent me the decals & parts to convert my MR kit in to an AEW one.  I remember seeing (and hearing) the AEW Shack flying so it is the way I remember them.  Plus the Magic Roundabout character names.  It will be a while before I start it but looking forward to it.

So this was what was in the box

AEW dome & decals.  Going to be Dougal, now at the Manchester Museum of Science and Industry.  And comparing the MR body to the AEW

Got very distracted today.  I had a load of furniture delivered this week in nice cardboard boxes from Ikea.  And I can’t help thinking I could make a Type C Hangar In 1/48 out of the packing!

So...

Nearly 2m long, metre wide.  No, mustn’t.....

Just discovered this thread (after seeing your current hangar build!). Wow, has to be one of the most interesting and informative threads I have seen. Quick question, if you don't mind, what paint did you use for the Corgi Mazda pickup? Got a similar vehicle plan in mind, but in 1/72, and that green looks really good.

Also, regarding vehicles, you mention possibly wanting to add a chase car for your U-2. Have you seen the 1/43 police Ford Mustangs made by White Rose? The New York State Police one looks pretty close colour-wise, and of course already comes with a light bar. Not sure how easy they are to find, but might be worth a look.

Cheers Dan.  That looks a nice Mustang.  It is surprising how few vehicles there are in the 1/43 to 1/50 range that can be easily converted.  Even RAF - mk2 transit? Sherpa?  There are kits & expensive models, but you don’t really want to pay that when you are going to respiratory them.  The Mazda was pulled apart, primed with some 99p car primer from QD and then sprayed with Humbrol rattle can - dark green 163.

My real vehicle want is a Leyland Ergo cab 8 wheel tanker.  Would have to scratch build the tank, but I am after a corgi one that is a bit battered to respray.

Thanks for that. I'd not looked at Humbrol 163 as a colour option, and the fact that its available in a rattle can is tempting, as I have 10 roughly 1/72 diecast to paint in green (plus 9 in midnight blue, one in white, one in a different blue that I need to work out the shade of, and one in three colour camo!). There are more vehicle options in 1/72, both diecast and plastic kit, especially RAF, but surprisingly for USAF vehicles, the options are a lot more limited. There are several decent looking resin kits, but they are £40ish, and so not an option. I think it is an overlooked area of modelling, as the various vehicle types really do add to a diorama.

Do you have a list of what you have in 72nd?

Kit wise, I have the Hasegawa ground crew set with the Chevrolet crew van, then I've got the Hobby Master weapons loading set with Ford tractor and weapon loader vehicle. Main project involves repainting and in some cases slightly modifying 22 Matchbox and similar vehicles. I've got 4 Matchbox early 70s Ford F150 pickups, a 70s Matchbox Jeep Gladiator pickup, an early 80s Matchbox ambulance, a Majorette ambulance, a Road Champs school bus, a Hot Wheels Dodge Aries estate car, Hot Wheels Dodge and Ford pickups, a couple of Chevrolet Blazers, 2 Cararama 1/72 pickups (GMC Sierra and Ford F150) plus a few others. All are currently stripped of paint and polished awaiting a coat of primer. They will be repainted, have decals added, in some cases they will be modified and hopefully all will have their wheels replaced. Hoping to also pick up the PJ Productions kits too at some point.
