David Mooney
Ive been working on this while my enthusiasm has taken a holiday during my build of a trumpeter A-1H. I thought about many things to try but I thought id stick a nice German bunker on a hill ready for the advancing forces from the allies. As you can see its quite imposing looking down across the forest and muddy road. I have still lots to do to it, plus I'm thinking of covering it in snow (never done that so I'm having a mild panic at the idea). The bunker is removable so any figures can be put inside, any thoughts or questions are more than welcome Edited September 1, 2015 by David Mooney

dubster72
That looks good David, very reminiscent of the Hurtgen forest - if you decide to add snow, try using hairspray as a fixer & sprinkle bicarbonate of soda. It works very well. I can post an example if you'd like? Cheers Patrick
David Mooney
Yeah that would be great duster, anything will be a help. It's one thing I've never tried so all infomation would be a help at this point
dubster72
This is my King Tiger dio in 1/72 scale - I sprayed hairspray over it & sprinkled bicarbonate of soda using a fine sieve. On a very old Jagdtiger build, I mixed the bicarb with PVA glue & plaster for a thicker covering.

David Mooney
Thanks Dubster, If it turns out looking that good I'll give it a go! My dio DaveJL is 32nd scale
David Mooney
Just a few update pictures as ive been busy on other projects. I thought the forest need a couple more trees to it to add depth so they are now installed and glued into placePlus I've made the puddle bigger as I didn't think it big enough as I'm adding snow to it so the puddle was to small for the amount of water that would be running down from melting snow. I have also added a few white streaks in the water to give it the look of moving waterPlus ive added a few posters and a newspaper for the chaps inside the bunker to read :-)thanks for looking
David Mooney
Ok I bit the bullet and tried the idea Dubster gave me of doing the snow, so with baking soda and sieve in hand I had a go at it. I hope you think it looks good and realistic. On the inside of the bunker I have added a few ammo boxes as wellThanks for looking
Simon382
For a first go at modelling snow I have to say I'm impressed. Show these pics in black & white and you'd think that you were actualy there! Very nice indeed. I'm sure I've missed it but what scale is this? Looking forward to your next post
David Mooney
It's 1/35 Simon, I didn't think of doing any black and white pictures but it's a great idea. I might try a few sepia ones as well once it's all done and see what looks better. Thanks for you comment ☺

dubster72
That looks great Dave! Very cold & the b&w pics make the bunker look very forbidding - I wouldn't fancy assaulting that one! Edited August 25, 2015 by dubster72
David Mooney
Thanks for your comments on this so far, ive been busy painting my figures up...................oh i hate figures! This part has always been a love hate realationship, i love doing them but they hate me painting them ! I really envy people that can do figures well, faces are almost impossible to get right but practice makes perfect (and I do certain need more practice). Here are a couple of shots of the guys that will be added to the diorama once its complete Edited August 25, 2015 by David Mooney
Marvel Onkey
They all look absolutely freezing I think you've done a good job on the faces- they look mostly disgruntled and resigned to yet another patrol in the cold and the mud.
GrahamS
Definitely looks a bit nippy there! Graham
Rob 1
This is looking really impressive! The little scene has captured my imagination, I think with it having such height with the road set down in the little valley and all the scenery looking really good, then adding the cold weather really brings it to life. A diorama where you feel like you could shrink yourself down and go exploring in it - that is diorama building at its best in my opinon.

Thanks Marvel, even when I look at the diorama I feel sorry for these guys :-) Definitely looks a bit nippy there! Graham Thanks Graham This is looking really impressive! To me its all about making a subject i.e a tank, plane, car or boat come alive in its natural environment. Everytime I look at I think, I could add this or that to it and by the time I have finished thinking of things..........its bedtime again, its endless! lol! Like here, I thought id add a few little icicles to make it look even colder Edited August 27, 2015 by David Mooney
