The Other Tims 1/72 Trumpeter F105G Thunderchief 'Wild Weasel' - 41 Sqn RAF 1977 +++FINISHED+++

Have been getting on with this.

In 1977 the RAF was invited to attend Exercise Red Flag 77, during August, at Nellis AFB, Nevada USA.

208 Sqn was selected and sent some aircraft. They were painted in an experimental Light Stone/Dark Earth scheme over their DG/DSG scheme in ATRF paint. The rear end behind the engines was not painted due to the muck, dirt and exhaust making it difficult to remove ARTF paint.

It was agreed that 2 of 41 Sqn's F105G Thuds would also deploy to support the Bananas from 208 Sqn, who soon gained a fearsome reputation for low flying, at 100ft. The Thuds would then destroy any SAM capability allowing the Bucs to climb and drop ordnance in a threat free environment.

The Thuds also had a temp paint scheme over their normal livery:

Question is, do they pack the same sort of Anti-air defence in the form of a pair of 500 pounders... ;-)

Fraid not - Being a Weasel it will be suitably be armed with large and small Anti Radiation Bullets.......

After some touch up, some Klear floor polish, it was time for some decals:

The RAF inherited F105G Thunderchief (USAF S/N 63-8320), known as 'Bam Bam' as part of the lend/lease scheme. This airframe aquired 3 x MiG kills in its earlier guise of a F105F over the skys of Vietnam.

The RAF chose to preserve this history with its Kills on the port side and 'Bam Bam' sprayed on the wing/intake area.

It was given the RAF serial XZ107, coded H when taken on strength of 41 Sqn.

For the second phase of Ex Red Flag 77, the RAF contingent was assigned as part of the OPFOR (opposing Force) and the aircraft were given a Soviet Star to signify this.

A mix of decals were used, including the stencils from the Trumpeter kit, Roundels and RAF serials from a Italeri Jaguar kit (built in Nigerian colours in the Lesser Known Air Force Group Build), and some 41 Sqn markings from the MA sheet used for said Jaguar build.

These were sealed again using Klear, and look to have taken really well.

Glass items were added and painted with Red/Green Humbrol clear.

Next will be some subtle panel line pin washing using brownish oil/turps and some weathering.

Should I add some paint 'peeling' effect?

However research shows that the Nevada heat helped 'bake on' the ARTF making it hard to remove, so maybe not?

After I need to add ordnance (a failing in the kit is the lack of decal instructions for weapons so I have added what I could using various references), matt varnish and remove the canopy masking.

I think it suits its new livery!

Tim this looks awesome! Most things look great in the dark earth/stone scheme!

Thanks - i used Mr Color 313 yellow for the light stone and Mr Color 310 US Dark Tan with a few drops of black to try to match the dark earth colour.

Finding the actual BSC colours for Light Stone for difficult, so I thought I would try with what I had. Lightened both on a second pass to try to add some post shading - all sprayed freehand in one sitting.

This one is looking great Tim. I'm not normally a fan of panel line washes but it sets this one off well. Like the green/grey/LAG tank as a touch of different colours.

They will need touch up painting having come off the sprue and then mattcote over the satin paint.

Just the Pitot and stores to load!

Off to Guatemala for 3 weeks EMT training tomorrow, so will need to complete in November.

Will keep across the GB with interest!

Excellent build Tim. Your weathering looks very good. I've just started using Flory washes, I think they are very good. Regards, Joe
